Overview

Cannon is one of AFSOC's two stateside flying wings. The 27th Special Operations Wing runs four groups — Operations, Maintenance, Mission Support, and Medical — and its 27th Special Operations Group flies the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, MC-130J Commando II, CV-22B Osprey, U-28A Draco, and MQ-9 Reaper. The base traces to 1942 as Clovis Army Air Field, was renamed for Gen. John K. Cannon in 1957, and moved from Air Combat Command to AFSOC on 1 October 2007. Counting active duty, civilians, contractors, families, and retirees, the Cannon community tops 20,000 people, and the medical group alone serves nearly 13,000 beneficiaries across eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Aircrew upgrades, Melrose Range exercises, joint SOF integration, and a long construction push keep a steady stream of TDY travelers coming through.

The place is the high plains: Clovis sits at about 4,300 feet on the Llano Estacado, eight miles east of the base, 100 miles from both Lubbock and Amarillo, Texas. It is sunny most of the year, hot and stormy in summer, cold and windy in winter, and dusty when the wind gets up in spring. For a TDY traveler that means three things: you need a car, you need to plan the airport leg, and you want lodging that is quiet and has a kitchen, because the restaurant list in Clovis is short and the drive to anything bigger is long.

Weather

July averages a 90°F high and 65°F low; January runs 52°F/27°F with about 2 inches of snow. Annual precipitation is roughly 17 inches, most of it in May–September thunderstorms, and April is the windiest month at an average 12.6 mph with dust storms common through spring.

Best months

September–October and late April–May

Tough months

March–April for wind and dust; June–August for heat, hail, and severe thunderstorms; December–February for hard freezes and occasional ice

Getting there

  • Clovis Regional Airport (CVN) is six miles east of town on NM 523 with Denver Air Connection service to Denver International; Enterprise handles rentals there. Most travelers fly into Lubbock (LBB) or Amarillo (AMA), each about 100 miles and 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car on US 84 or US 60 — reserve the rental in advance because both airports run short on trucks and SUVs during exercise weeks.
  • Both gates are open 24/7: the Main Gate on the north side off US 60/84 and the Portales Gate on the south side reached via NM 467. Hours can change with FPCON, so confirm on cannon.af.mil or the base Facebook page before an odd-hour arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at 601 Chindit Avenue just outside the Main Gate, 575-784-2400. Bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; anyone without a DoD ID needs a sponsor. VCC hours are not posted consistently online, so call ahead if you expect to arrive after normal duty hours.
  • Traffic is light by any standard, but US 60/84 west of Clovis backs up at the Main Gate between about 0700–0800 and 1600–1700 on duty days. Watch for farm equipment, cattle trucks, and blowing dust on the highway, and in winter the two-lane stretches ice over before the town streets do.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities as Cannon Family Homes — a gated community of two- to four-bedroom homes in the Chavez Manor, Chavez West, and Joe Cannon Estates neighborhoods, housing roughly 2,300 residents.
  • Call 575-784-7141 for the waitlist; the Military Housing Office is 575-904-5465.
  • Off base, a Clovis three-bedroom rental has run roughly $1,000–$1,400 a month and the median home price was about $205,000 in recent listings (2024–2025); Portales runs closer to $175,000.
  • Buying is common for 3–4 year tours because prices are low, but resale can take months — plan on it.

BAH 2026 · MHA NM207

  • Cannon falls in MHA NM207 (Clovis).
  • Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $1,365 with dependents / $1,107 without, and an O-3 approximately $1,875 with / $1,506 without — up about 3.4 percent from 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

North Clovis / Colonial Park

The newer side of town — a mix of new construction and larger homes around the Colonial Park golf course, feeding Clovis Municipal Schools, with prices at the top of the local market and the easiest hop onto US 60/84 westbound.

Commute: ~15 min

West Clovis (near Prince St and 21st St)

Older ranch-style homes and duplexes on the base side of town; the cheapest rents in Clovis, the shortest drive to the Main Gate, and the most military neighbors.

Commute: ~10 min

East Clovis / Sandia Heights area

Established 1970s–2000s subdivisions near the hospital and Clovis High School, with mid-range rents and a slightly longer drive across town on 21st Street or US 60/84.

Commute: ~20 min

Cannon Family Homes (on base)

Balfour Beatty's gated community minutes from the flightline and the CDC, with 2–4 bedroom floor plans by rank and family size; the waitlist can stretch months, so call 575-784-7141 the day you get orders.

Commute: ~5 min

Portales

A college town (Eastern New Mexico University) 20 miles south with lower home prices, a small-town feel, and Portales Municipal Schools; the trade-off is a 25–30 minute drive up NM 467 to the Portales Gate every day.

Commute: ~30 min
05

Schools & childcare

  • No schools on base. Kids in Cannon Family Homes are bused to Clovis Municipal Schools; Portales Municipal Schools serve families who live south of the base.
  • Clovis Municipal Schools (pre-K–12) run multiple elementaries, three middle schools, and two high schools including Clovis High, with bus service for anyone more than a mile from a school and a dedicated military family page; the district partners with the base on a back-to-school event each August. Portales Municipal Schools have three elementaries, a junior high, and Portales High, with Eastern New Mexico University in town for dual credit and spouse degrees.
  • The School Liaison sits with the Military & Family Readiness Center at 575-784-4228 — ask for the SLO for enrollment, IEP transfers, and district comparisons.
  • The base Child Development Center is the main daycare option and has a waitlist; register at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as orders are in hand. Off-base licensed care in Clovis is limited, so families lean on the CDC, Family Child Care homes on base, and the Youth Center for school-age care.
06

Healthcare

  • The 27th Special Operations Medical Group is an outpatient clinic at 208 W. D.L. Ingram Ave, Bldg 1400 — no emergency room and no inpatient beds. The appointment line published on base directories is 575-784-2778; confirm on cannon.tricare.mil.
  • Emergencies go to Plains Regional Medical Center (Presbyterian) in Clovis, the area's only hospital; call 911 for anything serious. Specialty referrals often route to Lubbock or Amarillo, so budget for the drive.
  • TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

Santa Rosa and Route 66

About 120 miles west on US 60 and I-40, the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa is an 80-foot-deep spring where divers train year-round; Tucumcari's neon Route 66 motels are an hour closer. Good for a low-key weekend when you want mountains without driving all the way to Santa Fe (four hours).

Insider tips

  1. 01Spring wind is no joke: April averages nearly 13 mph and gusts push 50 during dust storms. Park facing the wind, keep sunglasses handy, and do not leave anything light in a truck bed.
  2. 02Summer thunderstorms bring hail. If your rental has a garage, use it — Cactus View and Cannon Crest both have off-street parking for that reason.
  3. 03Book the Caprock Inn the day your orders drop, then call again a week out. Exercise and inspection weeks empty the 88 rooms, and the non-availability number is your ticket to a crashpad at the $110 rate.
  4. 04Both gates are 24/7, but the Portales Gate is the smart move if you are coming from ENMU or the south; the Main Gate line on US 60/84 stacks up at 0700 and 1630 on duty days.
  5. 05Fly into Lubbock if fares are close: it has more flights, more rental trucks, and better roads to Clovis than Amarillo. Reserve the car in advance.
  6. 06PCS families: call Cannon Family Homes at 575-784-7141 before you leave your last base. The waitlist for 3- and 4-bedroom homes can run months, and Clovis rentals move fast in summer.
  7. 07Pack for two seasons in one week — 90s in the afternoon and 50s at night are normal in May and September, and a February morning can be in the teens with a warm afternoon.
  8. 08New Mexico is on Mountain Time but Texas is Central, so your Lubbock and Amarillo flights leave an hour 'earlier' than you think. Set the phone to auto and double-check the departure time.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at Cannon and get reimbursed?
Yes, if the Caprock Inn is full. Call 575-784-2918 first; if no room is available you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard rate that applies to Clovis — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE, with $51 M&IE on the first and last travel days. Base Crashpads homes are priced inside that rate and issue DTS-ready receipts.
Which gate should I use and when is it open?
Both the Main Gate (north side, off US 60/84) and the Portales Gate (south side, via NM 467) are open 24/7. Visitors without a DoD ID stop at the Visitor Control Center at 601 Chindit Ave outside the Main Gate, 575-784-2400, with a REAL ID, registration, and insurance. Confirm hours on cannon.af.mil before a late-night arrival.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 27th Special Operations Medical Group is an outpatient clinic without an ER. Emergencies go to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis; call 911. Specialty care is often referred to Lubbock or Amarillo under TRICARE West (TriWest).
Where do families live?
Most live in Clovis, 10–20 minutes east of the base, either in Cannon Family Homes (Balfour Beatty, 575-784-7141) or in rentals and purchases on the north and west sides of town. Portales, 30 minutes south, is the budget and college-town alternative with its own school district.
