Overview
Holloman is the Air Force's fighter and Reaper schoolhouse. The 49th Wing hosts the largest F-16 and MQ-9 formal training units in the service: the 54th Fighter Group's 8th, 311th and 314th Fighter Squadrons run the world's largest F-16 Basic Course, tasked with producing more than 50 combat-ready fighter pilots a year, while the 6th, 9th and 29th Attack Squadrons turn out more than 700 MQ-9 pilots and sensor operators annually. Tenants include the 704th Test Group and its Holloman High Speed Test Track, the world's premier rocket-sled facility, and the 635th Materiel Maintenance Group, the Air Force's only organic BEAR base unit with 407 military and civilian personnel. Roughly 14,000 military-affiliated people are served by the base, and students, instructors, maintainers and test crews cycle through constantly.
The base sits in the Tularosa Basin at about 4,000 feet, six miles west of Alamogordo (population around 32,000) on US-70/82, with the Sacramento Mountains to the east and White Sands to the west. Expect 300 days of sunshine, hot dry summers, chilly winter nights, and a spring wind season that throws gypsum dust across the highway. For a TDY traveler the practical realities are simple: one 24-hour gate, a 50-room base inn that fills fast, a small-town hotel strip, no commercial air service in Alamogordo, and a 90-mile drive from El Paso. Plan the car and the lodging early and the rest of the assignment takes care of itself.
Weather
Alamogordo averages a July high near 93°F with lows in the mid-60s, and a January high around 55°F with lows near 29°F; annual precipitation is only about 13 inches, most of it in late-summer monsoon showers. Humidity runs 25 to 50 percent, and the sun is relentless at this elevation.
Best months
October through early December and March through May, with warm days and cool nights
Tough months
June and early July for heat above 95°F, and March through April for the spring wind season when blowing dust from the White Sands basin can drop visibility on US-70
Getting there
- Fly into El Paso International (ELP) and rent a car; it is about 90 miles and roughly an hour and 45 minutes north via US-54 to Alamogordo, then US-70 west to the base. Alamogordo-White Sands Regional (ALM) is general aviation only, with no commercial service, and Albuquerque (ABQ) is about 3.5 hours. You will need a car here; there is no practical transit to the base.
- The Main Gate, just off US-70 south of the base, is the only 24/7 gate. The West Gate runs inbound only 0600-0800 and outbound only 0600-1800 Monday through Friday, and the La Luz Gate is permanently closed. Gate hours change during exercises and holidays, so confirm on the base's Newcomers gate page before you arrive.
- The Visitor Control Center is at the Main Gate (Building 1, Holloman AFB, NM 88330). It operates during weekday duty hours; outside those hours the Main Gate can only issue escort-required passes, so arrive with your CAC or a REAL ID-compliant license and have your sponsor ready to escort if you are landing late. The center is listed at 575-572-4283; confirm hours on the official page.
- Traffic is light by any standard, but two things bite: White Sands Missile Range periodically closes US-70 between Alamogordo and Las Cruces for missile tests, usually for one to three hours with little notice, and spring dust storms can close it too. Check the WSMR roadblock line (575-678-1178) before driving the pass.

Holloman AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing is privatized through Soaring Heights Communities (Lendlease), with nearly 1,100 homes on base that received a $14 million renovation program; the community office is at 2300 Alamogordo Blvd and reachable at 888-897-8428, and the base Housing Management Office is 575-572-7832.
- Off base, Alamogordo is one of the cheapest Air Force towns: 3-bedroom rentals listed around $1,600 a month in 2026 and a median home price in the $220,000 to $260,000 range in late 2025, so buying on BAH is realistic here.
BAH 2026 · MHA NM205
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,590 | $1,197 |
| O-3 | $1,905 | $1,764 |
- 2026 BAH for MHA NM205 (Holloman AFB/Alamogordo) is approximately $1,590 with dependents and $1,197 without for an E-5, and $1,905 with dependents and $1,764 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables, an 11.9 percent jump over 2025.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Desert Skies (on base)
Soaring Heights' on-base neighborhood of single-family homes and duplexes with fenced yards, playgrounds and walking trails, with Holloman Elementary and Middle within the fence; the easiest option for families who want zero commute and neighbors on the same schedule.
North Alamogordo / Wood Streets and Scenic Drive
The established side of town with mature trees, mountain views up Scenic Drive, older mid-century homes and the bulk of Alamogordo's schools; the most walkable and the closest thing to a neighborhood feel.
Southeast Alamogordo
Newer subdivisions near the golf course and the south end of town, with the newest construction and the shortest run down US-70 to the gate; popular with dual-income and officer families buying on BAH.
Tularosa
A small farming village 12 miles north on US-54 with pistachio orchards, cheaper lots and a slower pace; an easy commute but you will drive into Alamogordo for most shopping.
Cloudcroft and High Rolls
Mountain living at 8,600 feet in the Lincoln National Forest, 20 to 30 degrees cooler in summer and real snow in winter; beautiful, but the US-82 descent in ice is no joke and it adds real time to every duty day.
Schools & childcare
- Two Alamogordo Public Schools campuses sit on base: Holloman Elementary (750 Arnold Ave, PK-5, about 520 students) and Holloman Middle (381 1st St, grades 6-8, about 170 students). High schoolers ride to Alamogordo High School in town.
- Alamogordo Public Schools serves Alamogordo, Holloman AFB, La Luz, High Rolls and Mountain Park; the on-base schools and Alamogordo High earned Purple Star designations in 2021 for military-family support. Cloudcroft Municipal Schools is the small mountain district for families living up the hill.
- The Holloman School Liaison (575-572-3944) is the single best first call for enrollment, transfers and IEP handoffs; the office also runs a Facebook page with district updates.
- The Child Development Center (575-572-3753) and Family Child Care program are managed through the 49th FSS; get on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you have orders, because CDC waitlists here run months for infant and toddler slots.
Healthcare
- The 49th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic only, open Monday through Friday 0730-1630, with no emergency room. The appointment line is listed at 575-572-2778; confirm on holloman.tricare.mil.
- Emergencies go to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, about 10 minutes from the gate, a civilian hospital where Air Force physicians hold admitting privileges. Major trauma and specialty care typically route to El Paso or Las Cruces.
- New Mexico is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 2025 (888-874-9378). Update your PCM and referrals through TriWest when you arrive.

Off duty

White Sands National Park
The world's largest gypsum dunefield starts 15 minutes west of the gate on US-70. Rent a sled at the visitor center, drive Dunes Drive, and stay for a sunset that looks like snow at 90 degrees. Check the NPS closures page first: missile tests can close Dunes Drive for up to three hours.

New Mexico Museum of Space History
Alamogordo's hillside space museum covers the V-2 program, the Holloman rocket-sled and chimpanzee flights, and the Apollo Little Joe II rocket in the Stapp Air and Space Park, with a planetarium and theater. Ten minutes from base and a solid rainy-day option.

Cloudcroft and the Lincoln National Forest
Twenty miles up US-82 the desert turns into pine forest at 8,600 feet. Cloudcroft has a walkable main street, the Trestle Recreation Area hiking trails, a small ski hill in winter, and summer temperatures 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the basin.

Ruidoso
About an hour northeast, Ruidoso is the region's resort town: Ski Apache in winter, Ruidoso Downs horse racing in summer, Inn of the Mountain Gods casino, and enough restaurants to fill a weekend. The SR-244 drive from Cloudcroft is the scenic route.

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park
Twelve miles south of Alamogordo at the mouth of Dog Canyon, with a spring-fed canyon trail that climbs 3,000 feet into the Sacramentos, a historic ranch house, and a quiet campground. Best hiked October through April.
Official site ↗Three Rivers Petroglyph Site
Thirty-five miles north on US-54, a BLM site with more than 21,000 Jornada Mogollon petroglyphs along a basalt ridge, plus a small campground. Go early; there is no shade.
Official site ↗Pistachio country and Tularosa
The Tularosa Basin grows most of New Mexico's pistachios. Heart of the Desert and McGinn's PistachioLand on US-54 north of town do tastings, wine, and the giant pistachio photo op, and the Tularosa Basin Museum of History covers the Trinity test and the old town.
Insider tips
- 01The Main Gate is the only 24/7 entrance. The West Gate is inbound only 0600-0800 on weekdays, so if you are coming from Alamogordo for a mid-morning show, plan on the Main Gate off US-70.
- 02Spring wind season (roughly March through May) is the local hazard: gypsum dust from the basin can drop visibility on US-70 to near zero. If a blowing dust advisory is up, wait it out; do not drive into a brown wall.
- 03White Sands Missile Range closes US-70 toward Las Cruces for tests, usually one to three hours and sometimes with little notice. Call 575-678-1178 the afternoon before any El Paso or Las Cruces run.
- 04Book the Holloman Inn the day you have orders; reservations open 120 days out and 50 suites go quickly when a B-course start overlaps an exercise. If it is full, get the non-availability letter in writing before you book off base.
- 05Alamogordo's hotel inventory is a short strip on White Sands Boulevard, and it sells out during Project Iron Agility-style exercises and holiday weekends. For a 3-month-plus TDY, a furnished house is cheaper and quieter.
- 06You are at 4,000 feet with almost no humidity and 300 sunny days. Bring sunscreen, a hat, lip balm and a real water bottle; new arrivals get dehydrated on day one at the track or the flightline.
- 07The 49th MDG is a clinic, not a hospital. Know the way to Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (10 minutes into town) before you need it, and register your family with TriWest on arrival.
- 08Winter is mild in the basin but Cloudcroft gets real snow; if you plan to live up the hill, get all-weather tires and expect US-82 to ice in the tunnel and switchbacks. Families with kids in APS should call the School Liaison (575-572-3944) before signing a lease, since on-base schools zone to Desert Skies housing.
