Overview

Fairchild is Air Mobility Command's tanker heavyweight. The 92nd Air Refueling Wing and its Washington Air National Guard partner, the 141st, share the largest KC-135 Stratotanker fleet in the Air Force, and the 336th Training Group runs the USAF Survival School, pushing roughly 6,000 aircrew and special-duty students a year through SERE training in the forests north of Spokane. Add the 36th Rescue Squadron's UH-1N Hueys and the Joint Personnel Recovery Agency, and you get about 3,200 active-duty members, 900-plus Guardsmen, 500 civilians, and a steady stream of TDY students who need a bed for anywhere from three weeks to six months.

The base sits on the West Plains 12 miles southwest of Spokane at 2,462 feet, a wide-open plateau that gets four real seasons: dry 85-degree summers, a colorful fall, and winters that average about 45 inches of snow with January highs near 40. Spokane itself is a city of a quarter million with a walkable downtown built around the falls, and Idaho's Lake Coeur d'Alene is under an hour east. For a TDY traveler the practical facts are simple: fly into GEG 15 minutes from the gate, keep snow tires or chains in your plan from November through March, and book on-base lodging early because SERE classes fill the inns.

Weather

Spokane averages about 45 inches of snow a year, with December the snowiest month and January the coldest at roughly 22 to 40 degrees. Summers are dry and sunny with July highs around 85, though wildfire smoke can settle over the plateau in August.

Best months

June through mid-September, plus a crisp, colorful October

Tough months

December through February — snow, ice, and freezing fog on US-2 and I-90; occasional inversions and August wildfire smoke

Getting there

  • Fly into Spokane International Airport (GEG), about 12 miles east of the base on US Highway 2 — 15 minutes door to gate. Rental cars are on-site at the terminal; book one, because there is no practical way to get around the West Plains without wheels, and reserve early in summer when leisure travel spikes.
  • The Main Gate on US-2 (north side of base) and the Graham Gate on South Graham Road (housing side) are both open 24/7 per the base housing office listings. The Rambo Road Gate on the east side is open to ID-card holders around the clock but to the public only during events, and the McFarlane Gate on the far west side opens only for events. Confirm current hours on the Fairchild Visitor Information page before an odd-hours arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center sits at the Main Gate on Arnold Street (Bldg 2071); base directories list it at 509-247-5495 — confirm hours on fairchild.af.mil before you count on it. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and insurance; sponsors can pre-announce visitors through the VCC. Spokane Transit Route 61 stops at the visitor center if you are car-free.
  • Traffic is light by big-city standards, but US-2 through Airway Heights backs up at the afternoon gate rush and during Northern Quest casino events. In winter, freezing fog and black ice on the plateau are the real hazard — leave early and slow down between the airport and the gate.

The crashpad option

We're expanding at Fairchild AFB and lining up West Plains properties for the 2026-27 SERE and tanker TDY cycles. If you have orders to Fairchild — especially a multi-week SERE class or a 141st ARW tour — send us your dates and we'll match you with a furnished crashpad priced inside the $126 Spokane rate with DTS-ready receipts, or tell you honestly if we can't yet.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing on base is privatized and run by Balfour Beatty Communities as Fairchild AFB Homes (leasing office 210 Bong Street, 509-244-6500), with two- to four-bedroom floor plans and a pet-friendly community; the government Military Housing Office is listed at 509-247-2341.
  • Off base, Spokane-area rents in 2026 average roughly $1,300 to $1,400 for an apartment, with Airway Heights around $1,500 and a two-bedroom in Medical Lake near $1,575.
  • Spokane County's median sale price was about $446,000 in mid-2026, and the West Plains has been flat year over year — buying is realistic on an O-3 or senior NCO budget if you plan to stay past one tour.

BAH 2026 · MHA WA310

  • Fairchild falls in MHA WA310 (Spokane).
  • Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $2,184 with dependents / $1,665 without, and an O-3 approximately $2,844 with dependents / $2,418 without; confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Airway Heights

The base's front-door town on US-2: newer subdivisions, big-box shopping, Northern Quest casino, and Cheney School District schools — the cheapest commute in the area, and where most TDY travelers and first-term families land.

Commute: ~10 min

Medical Lake

A small lakeside town south of the base whose Purple Star school district also runs the on-base elementary; quiet, affordable, and popular with families who want to know their kids' teachers by name.

Commute: ~10 min

Cheney

Eastern Washington University's college town 20 minutes south — rentals turn over with the academic year, prices are friendly, and the Fish Lake Trail and Turnbull refuge are out your back door.

Commute: ~20 min

Northwest Spokane (Indian Trail, Five Mile, Audubon)

Established neighborhoods with mature trees and Spokane Public Schools, a reasonable run down US-2 or Francis Avenue to the gate, and Riverside State Park trails within minutes.

Commute: ~25 min

South Hill and Downtown Spokane

Manito Park, craftsman homes, and the city's best restaurants; the tradeoff is a 20-plus-minute drive on I-90 and US-2 that gets slower on snowy mornings.

Commute: ~25 min
05

Schools & childcare

  • Michael Anderson Elementary (preschool through 5th grade) sits on base and serves mostly military-connected kids; it belongs to the Medical Lake School District, which also runs Medical Lake Middle School and Medical Lake High School for base housing residents.
  • Medical Lake School District is a designated Purple Star district and staffs a Military Family Advocate to work with Fairchild families. Airway Heights falls under Cheney School District, and Spokane Public Schools covers the city neighborhoods; Washington's Interstate Compact supports mid-year transfers.
  • The 92nd FSS School Liaison Office is at 400 W. Castle Street, 509-247-2246 (DSN 657-2246) — call before you pick a neighborhood.
  • The base Child Development Center is at 201 E. Fairchild Street, 509-247-2403; waitlists run months long, so request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders and ask the CDC about Family Child Care homes in base housing.
06

Healthcare

  • The 92nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital — no emergency room. Appointments run through 509-247-5590; the clinic is open Monday 8:00 to 4:30 and Tuesday through Friday 7:30 to 4:30, closed weekends, with an after-hours nurse line at 509-247-5661.
  • Emergencies go to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center (a Level II trauma center at 101 W. 8th Avenue) or MultiCare Deaconess Hospital (800 W. 5th Avenue), both downtown about 20 to 25 minutes east. Urgent care clinics in Airway Heights and along Spokane's north side handle the in-between stuff.
  • TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance — update DEERS and enroll or transfer within 30 days of arrival, and TDY travelers should use the Nurse Advice Line before self-referring downtown.

Riverfront Park and Spokane Falls

The 100-acre Expo '74 park in downtown Spokane sits right on the falls, with the SkyRide gondola over the lower falls, the Looff Carrousel, an ice ribbon in winter, and a summer concert calendar. It is 20 minutes east on I-90 and the best first-night walk for anyone new to town.

Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Forty-five minutes east on I-90, Coeur d'Alene's downtown, lakefront boardwalk, and beaches are the region's summer weekend default; ITT sells discounted lake cruises. Silverwood Theme Park is another 20 minutes north.

Northern Quest Resort and Casino

Five minutes from the Main Gate in Airway Heights, Northern Quest has a dozen restaurants, a bowling and arcade complex, a summer outdoor concert series, and a hotel that fills on event nights — which is one reason Airway Heights rooms get scarce.

Insider tips

  1. 01SERE students: your lodging is normally the Survival Inn on the west side of base, booked through the front desk and not DTS. Confirm with your course sponsor before you assume a Fairchild Inn room or an off-base rate.
  2. 02Winter on the West Plains is colder and icier than downtown Spokane — the plateau sits 500 feet higher. Rent a car with all-season or snow tires, keep a scraper and blanket in it, and give yourself extra time on US-2 in freezing fog.
  3. 03The Main Gate on US-2 is the one to use unless you live in base housing (Graham Gate). Rambo Road on the east side takes ID-card holders 24/7 but not visitors, so don't send a delivery or a guest that way.
  4. 04Spokane's $126 lodging rate doesn't flex by season, but hotel prices do — summer and Hoopfest and Bloomsday weekends blow past it. Book weeks ahead in June through September, or lock in a crashpad.
  5. 05August wildfire smoke is a real thing; air quality can sit in the unhealthy range for days. Pack for it if you have asthma, and expect PT and flight schedules to shift.
  6. 06PCS families: put your name on the Fairchild AFB Homes list and the CDC waitlist the day you get orders. Both run long, and West Plains rentals go fast because Amazon, the casino, and the base all compete for the same housing.
  7. 07First/last travel days pay $64.50 M&IE, not $86 — build that into your voucher math, and keep itemized receipts if you're spending anywhere near the lodging cap after taxes.
  8. 08Hold onto your Discover Pass ($30 a year) — Riverside, Mount Spokane, and every other Washington state park need it, and the base ODR shop can often sell you one or rent the gear to go with it.

FAQ

Will DTS reimburse a crashpad at Fairchild AFB?
Yes, if a room is not available on base. Contact the Fairchild Inn (509-247-5519) first; if it is full you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Spokane County rate of $126 lodging plus $86 M&IE. Keep an itemized receipt and you are reimbursed like any hotel.
Which gate should I use when I arrive, and what do I need?
The Main Gate off US Highway 2 on the north side of base is open 24/7 and has the Visitor Control Center right beside it. Bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; visitors without a DoD ID need a pass from the VCC or a sponsor who pre-announced them. Confirm hours on the Fairchild Visitor Information page before an overnight arrival.
Is there a hospital on Fairchild AFB?
No. The 92nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. Emergencies go to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center or MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in downtown Spokane, about 20 to 25 minutes east; call 911 for anything serious.
Where do Fairchild families usually live?
Base housing through Fairchild AFB Homes if the wait is short, otherwise Airway Heights and Medical Lake within 10 minutes of the gate, Cheney for a college-town feel 20 minutes south, or Northwest Spokane and the South Hill for city amenities at a 25-minute commute. E-5 BAH with dependents is approximately $2,184 in 2026, which covers most West Plains rentals.
