Overview

Grand Forks AFB is Air Combat Command's Global Hawk base. The 319th Reconnaissance Wing, aligned under 16th Air Force, flies the E/RQ-4B from the North Dakota prairie and supports the E-11A BACN and the Air Force's HF Global Communications System through squadrons spread around the globe. Tenants add real variety: the 10th Space Warning Squadron runs the PARCS missile-warning radar at Cavalier Space Force Station up the road, Customs and Border Protection flies MQ-9s and manned aircraft from the field, and a Space Development Agency detachment and an AETC training detachment sit on base. The Air Force has announced the wing will split into a base-operating unit and a mission unit, so expect staff visits, inspections, and manning surges to keep the TDY traffic steady.

The base sits 16 miles west of Grand Forks on US-2, next to the village of Emerado and the Grand Sky UAS business park. Grand Forks itself is a college town of about 104,000 in the metro, anchored by the University of North Dakota and its 15,000-plus students, with the Red River and the Minnesota line running through the middle. The weather is the story for anyone coming TDY: January means highs in the teens and lows below zero, wind chill that closes US-2 in ground blizzards, and a spring thaw that turns the Red River Valley into mud and flood season. Summers are honestly pleasant — 70s and low 80s with long daylight — and that is when most people wish they had been sent here.

Weather

Grand Forks averages a January high of about 16°F and a low of -3°F, with lows dropping below 0°F on roughly 50 days each winter and a record of -43°F. July runs about 81°F/57°F, and the city sees around 37 inches of snow per season, most of it wind-driven across open prairie.

Best months

June through September

Tough months

December through February for wind chill, ground blizzards, and US-2 closures; late March through April for the Red River thaw, mud, and flood watch

Getting there

  • Fly into Grand Forks International (GFK) on the west side of town — it is about 12 miles and 20 minutes from the Main Gate, and the base's own newcomer page calls it the primary airport. Fargo's Hector International (FAR) is the fallback at about 1 hour 45 minutes south on I-29. Rent a car; there is no practical transit to the base, and in winter ask for something with all-wheel drive and a block heater cord.
  • The Main Gate on US-2 is open 24/7 and is where the Visitor Center sits. The South (Commercial) Gate, just off Highway 2 on the east side of the base, runs Monday-Friday 0600-1900. The Eielson School Gate north of the Main Gate on County Road 3 is inbound only 0600-1530 and outbound only 1600-1800 on weekdays. Confirm hours on the base's Virtual Visitor Center page before you travel — they change with manning and weather.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at the Main Gate. Third-party guides list weekday business hours of roughly 0800-1600, but the official Virtual Visitor Center page is the authority — use it to pre-register visitors and confirm what you need. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, and if you are sponsoring a contractor or family member, get the pass started before they land.
  • US-2 between Grand Forks and the base is flat, open, and exposed. When the wind blows after a snowfall, ground blizzards can drop visibility to nothing and the state will close the highway — check the NDDOT travel map before you leave the hotel, and do not try to beat a closure.

TDY lodging

On base

There is no on-base lodging at Grand Forks AFB.

TLF (families)
Available
  • There is no on-base lodging at Grand Forks AFB.
  • The Warrior Inn (formerly at 632 Holzapple Street, Building 117) was on the Air Force's 2022 inn-closure list, and MilitaryINSTALLATIONS now states that the base no longer has an on-base Temporary Lodging Facility; the FSS site does not list lodging at all.
  • Old directory listings still show the inn's phone number and TLF units — treat them as stale.
  • The base tells newcomers to contact their sponsor, the Military Housing Office, or the Military & Family Readiness Center's relocation program for community lodging help, and to expect commercial lodging on orders from the start.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

We're expanding at Grand Forks AFB. With no on-base inn and a thin hotel inventory along Gateway Drive, this is exactly the kind of base where a furnished crashpad priced inside the $110 rate with DTS-ready receipts makes sense. Send us your dates and how many beds you need and we will let you know what we can line up.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing on base is privatized and run by Balfour Beatty Communities (701-594-8000), offering single-family homes and duplexes in a gated community with garages or carports, central air, and dishwashers; select homes are open to retirees and DoD civilians.
  • Because there is no TLF, families should apply with BBC as soon as orders are in hand and line up commercial lodging for the gap.
  • Off base, Grand Forks is a renter-friendly college town where typical apartment and single-family rents sit below the 2026 BAH tables for most ranks; check current listings for the exact figure at your rank, and know that leases turn over around UND's August start.
  • Buying is realistic here — prices are modest by national standards, but plan on a garage and a heated one if you can.

BAH 2026 · MHA ND190

  • 2026 BAH for MHA ND190 (Grand Forks AFB) per published tables: E-5 approximately $1,299 without dependents and $1,731 with dependents; O-3 approximately $1,902 without dependents and $2,199 with dependents.
  • Two independent sources agree on those figures, but confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before you sign a lease.
NeighborhoodCommute

Emerado

The tiny village right outside the Main Gate — a few rentals and a gas station, five minutes to work, and kids go to Twining on base or bus to Larimore; you trade every amenity for the shortest commute in the region.

Commute: ~5 min

Larimore

A small farm town 10 miles west on US-2 with its own K-12 school, cheap single-family homes, and a real small-town feel; popular with families who want a yard and do not mind driving into Grand Forks for shopping.

Commute: ~12 min

Grand Forks — south end (32nd to 62nd Ave S)

Newer subdivisions, the newest schools in Grand Forks Public Schools, and the Columbia Road retail strip; the biggest inventory of 3-bedroom rentals and the default pick for PCS families willing to drive US-2 daily.

Commute: ~25 min

Grand Forks — west side and UND area

Older homes and apartments near the university, the airport, and Gateway Drive, so it is the fastest city neighborhood to the base; lots of student rentals, so vet the block and watch for August lease turnover.

Commute: ~20 min

East Grand Forks, Minnesota

Across the Red River with a quieter, small-city vibe and its own school district; you pay Minnesota income tax and add a bridge crossing and about five minutes to the commute, but families like the schools and the Greenway access.

Commute: ~30 min
05

Schools & childcare

  • Nathan Twining Elementary & Middle School is on base and is the only K-8 building in the Grand Forks Public Schools system; the base has its own school board but contracts with GFPS to run it. A replacement Twining school broke ground June 12, 2026 and is scheduled to open in August 2028, so expect construction on the school side of base. High schoolers ride the bus into Grand Forks Public Schools.
  • Grand Forks Public Schools serves the city and base with a gifted-and-talented program and Project Lead The Way STEM curriculum at Twining; Larimore and Emerado-area districts serve families west of the gate, and East Grand Forks runs its own Minnesota district across the river. Confirm attendance zones with the district before signing a lease.
  • The base School Liaison Program office helps with enrollment, records transfer, and the interstate compact; published phone numbers conflict between directories, so reach the liaison through the base's School Liaison page or the Military & Family Readiness Center.
  • The Child Development Center (1683 J Street, Building 168) typically carries a waitlist — the base's own newcomer page says to start preparing as soon as you get orders. Request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the day your orders drop, and ask the M&FRC about School Age Care and off-base fee assistance in Grand Forks.
06

Healthcare

  • The 319th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital — no emergency room. Appointments and the after-hours nurse advice line run through 701-747-5601 (toll-free 1-866-747-5601); the clinic is open Monday-Friday 0730-1630 and closes weekends, federal holidays, and the third Friday of each month for wing training. The pharmacy is 701-747-5382.
  • For emergencies, go to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, the regional Level II trauma center, about 20 miles east of the gate on US-2 — or call 911 and expect an ambulance transport toward town.
  • TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance; confirm your enrollment and referral status with TriWest before you arrive, especially if you are coming from an East Region base.

Insider tips

  1. 01There is no on-base lodging, period. Do not let a stale directory listing for the Warrior Inn fool you — book commercial lodging or a crashpad before you fly, and get the commercial-lodging line on your orders up front so finance does not bounce the voucher.
  2. 02Winter driving on US-2 is the real hazard. Ground blizzards close the highway between Grand Forks and the base several times a winter; check the NDDOT travel map before every trip and keep a sleeping bag, water, and a shovel in the car.
  3. 03Ask for a block heater. Lows below zero happen about 50 nights a winter, and a rental or personal car that will not start at 0530 is the most common TDY problem here. Crashpads and apartments with a garage or a plug-in stall are worth the search.
  4. 04Pack real cold-weather gear — insulated boots, a parka rated well below zero, and face cover. The base issues nothing to TDY visitors, and the walk from the parking lot to the ops building is long when the wind chill is -40.
  5. 05PCS families: apply with Balfour Beatty the day you get orders and put your child on the CDC waitlist through MilitaryChildCare.com the same day. Both queues are long, and with no TLF the gap is on you.
  6. 06Spring is flood season. The Red River crested in 1997 and put much of Grand Forks under water; the levee system has held since, but late March through April still means mud, closed river roads, and a soggy Greenway.
  7. 07Summer is short but excellent — daylight runs past 9:30 p.m. in June. If you can pick your TDY window, aim for June through September and bring a bike for the Greenway.
  8. 08Mosquitoes and ticks are active above 40°F, and the prairie produces both in quantity from May on. Repellent and a tick check after Turtle River are not optional.

FAQ

Can I stay on base at Grand Forks AFB, and how does reimbursement work without an inn?
No — the base no longer has an on-base Temporary Lodging Facility, so there is no inn to call for a non-availability number. Your orders should authorize commercial lodging from the start; you are reimbursed actual lodging cost up to the FY2026 Grand Forks rate of $110 per night plus $68 M&IE ($51 on travel days). Keep itemized receipts and confirm the commercial-lodging authorization with your travel office before you go.
Which gate should I use and when is it open?
Use the Main Gate on US-2 — it is open 24/7 and has the Visitor Center. The South (Commercial) Gate off Highway 2 is weekdays 0600-1900, and the Eielson School Gate on County Road 3 is inbound 0600-1530 and outbound 1600-1800 on weekdays. Confirm current hours on the base's Virtual Visitor Center page before you travel.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 319th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room, open weekdays 0730-1630 (appointments and after-hours nurse advice at 701-747-5601). Emergencies go to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, about 20 miles east on US-2, or call 911.
Where do families at Grand Forks AFB actually live?
Most live in Balfour Beatty housing on base, where kids attend Twining K-8 on base, or in south Grand Forks, where the newest schools and the most 3-bedroom rentals are, at the price of a 25-minute US-2 commute. Larimore and Emerado are the small-town, short-commute options west of the gate, and East Grand Forks, Minnesota draws families who prefer its schools and do not mind Minnesota income tax.
