Overview

Minot is the Air Force's only dual-triad base. The 5th Bomb Wing flies B-52H Stratofortresses out of the 23rd and 69th Bomb Squadrons, and the 91st Missile Wing (the Rough Riders) controls 150 Minuteman III missiles and 15 launch control centers scattered across about 8,500 square miles of north-central North Dakota. Roughly 5,500 active-duty airmen, 1,000 civilians, and 5,500 family members call it home, and the visiting population is heavy on nuclear surety inspectors, AFGSC augmentees, bomber aircrew from Barksdale, and now Sentinel ICBM engineers, with more than $5 billion in construction planned over the coming decade.

The city of Minot, about 48,000 people 13 miles south, is a friendly, oil-and-agriculture town on the Souris River with a Scandinavian streak and a good hockey arena. The reality every TDY traveler needs to accept is the winter: January averages a high of 18°F and a low of 4°F, wind chills have hit the -60s, and ground blizzards can close US-83 between town and base. Where you sleep, whether you have a garage, and how you get to the gate are the questions that matter here.

Weather

Minot's January normals are an 18°F high and 4°F low, with about 45 inches of snow a year and wind that turns a modest snowfall into a whiteout on US-83. July averages 82°F with long, bright evenings, and the record spread runs from 109°F to -49°F.

Best months

June through mid-September

Tough months

December through March — sub-zero stretches, wind chills to -40 or worse, ground blizzards, and highway closures; April can still surprise with snow

Getting there

  • Fly into Minot International (MOT), served by Delta Connection to Minneapolis, United Express to Denver, and Allegiant to Phoenix/Mesa and Las Vegas. The airport is on the north edge of town, about 14 miles and 20 minutes from the main gate. Rent a car; there is no practical transit to base, and in winter book an SUV or AWD and ask for a scraper and block-heater cord. Central Cab (701-852-8000) and Taxi 9000 (701-852-9000) cover the airport if you arrive without one.
  • The Magic City (Main) Gate off US-83 is the only 24-hour gate. The Minot (South) Gate runs 0600-1730 Monday through Friday, and the North Gate opens only for events. Hours change with force-protection levels, so confirm on the base's Roads, Weather and Gates page before a late arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center sits at the main gate (196 Missile Avenue); published hours are 0600-1800 daily and the phone is 701-723-4066, but confirm both before you count on them. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and proof of insurance; TDY travelers with a CAC can proceed straight to the gate.
  • Coming by car, US-83 is the only road. It's called Broadway inside Minot and runs due north to the gate. When NDDOT rates US-83 yellow or red, the 5th Mission Support Group commander may delay reporting or close base roads; check 511 or travel.dot.nd.gov and the base Facebook page every winter morning.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-base family housing is Minot AFB Homes, run by Balfour Beatty Communities, with two- to four-bedroom single-family homes across the Prairie Rose Estates, North Point, and Sunflower Haven neighborhoods; leasing is 701-727-0007 and the office is at 164 Summit Drive.
  • The Air Force Housing Management Office controls the waitlist, and waits of several months are common, so apply as soon as you have orders.
  • Off base, Minot rents are well below the national average: a two-bedroom apartment runs about $1,089 and a three-bedroom rental about $1,426 as of 2025, with the typical home around $300,000.
  • Buying makes sense on a three-year tour, but budget for a garage and a high-efficiency furnace.

BAH 2026 · MHA ND191

GradeWith dependentsWithout dependents
E-5$1,548$1,260
O-3$2,175$1,824
  • For MHA ND191 (Minot AFB), 2026 BAH is approximately $1,548 with dependents and $1,260 without for an E-5, and $2,175 with dependents and $1,824 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables (about a 5% increase over 2025).
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.

Schools & childcare

  • Three on-base public schools run by Minot Public Schools: Dakota Elementary (east side of base, PK-5), North Plains Elementary (west side, K-5), and Memorial Middle School (6-8). All three hold North Dakota Purple Star designations for military-family support. High schoolers ride district buses into town, and the base runs contracted winter bus routes that stop at housing, the TLF, and the Youth Center.
  • Minot Public Schools is the largest district in the area with 13 elementary schools and two high schools, Minot High Magic City and Minot North. Families in Burlington, Surrey, Nedrose, and Souris Valley have their own small districts, which can be a draw if you want class sizes under 20.
  • School Liaison Program: 168 Missile Avenue, 701-723-1447, mafb.school.liaison@us.af.mil. Reach out before you PCS for records transfer, district boundary questions, and homeschool rules in North Dakota.
  • Child care: the Child Development Center is at 166 Missile Avenue (701-723-3750) for ages 6 months through preschool, with School Age Care at the Youth Center. Waitlists run long, so request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders and check Family Child Care homes on base as a backup.
06

Healthcare

  • 5th Medical Group, 194 Missile Avenue — an outpatient clinic, not a hospital, with no emergency room. Appointment line 701-723-5633; hours 0730-1630 weekdays with a Wednesday morning training closure. Flight medicine, family health, pharmacy, dental, and mental health are on site.
  • Emergencies go to Trinity Health in Minot, whose hospital is a Level II trauma center and the region's main referral facility. Call 911 from base and Trinity is where the ambulance will go; know the route before you need it.
  • Minot falls in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. TDY travelers on Prime can use the clinic for urgent needs, but confirm referral rules with TriWest before seeing a civilian provider.

Insider tips

  1. 01Winter is the whole story. Keep a survival kit in the car (blanket, boots, shovel, candle, snacks), never let the tank drop below half, and plug in the block heater any night under 0°F. Rental cars usually lack a cord; ask for one or buy one at the Exchange.
  2. 02Check US-83 conditions before you leave for the gate. When NDDOT posts yellow or red, the base may delay reporting or shut the road, and ground blizzards on the open prairie north of town can drop visibility to zero with a clear sky overhead.
  3. 03The Magic City Gate is the only 24-hour gate. If you land on a late flight, don't aim for the South Gate; it closes at 1730 on weekdays and doesn't open on weekends.
  4. 04Call the Sakakawea Inn the day orders are cut. With 87 rooms and a steady stream of inspectors and Sentinel contractors, TDY windows fill fast. If you're told no, get the non-availability number before you book anywhere else.
  5. 05PCS families: apply for Balfour Beatty housing and MilitaryChildCare.com the same week. Both waitlists at Minot run months, and a furnished crashpad or TLF bridges the gap far better than a hotel with a toddler.
  6. 06The missile field is a two-hour drive in every direction. If you're TDY to the 91st, expect trips to the launch facilities on gravel roads; pack for a day outdoors even on a desk-job itinerary.
  7. 07Summer is the payoff: sunset after 9:30 p.m. in June, Lake Sakakawea walleye, and the State Fair in July. Book Outdoor Rec boats and campsites early because everyone has the same idea.
  8. 08Bring real cold-weather gear, not fashion gear. The Exchange sells Carhartt and Sorels for a reason, and a face mask is standard issue for the walk from the parking lot when the wind chill hits -40.

FAQ

Will DTS reimburse a crashpad at Minot AFB?
Yes. Once the Sakakawea Inn issues a non-availability number, you're reimbursed up to the FY2026 standard CONUS rate of $110 per night plus $68 M&IE ($51 on travel days). A crashpad priced at or under $110 with an itemized receipt clears DTS the same as a hotel.
Which gate do I use and what do I need?
Use the Magic City (Main) Gate off US-83, the only 24-hour entry. CAC holders go straight through; everyone else stops at the Visitor Control Center by the gate with a REAL ID, registration, and insurance. Confirm hours on the base's Roads, Weather and Gates page since force-protection changes and storms shift them.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 5th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no ER (appointments 701-723-5633). Emergencies go to Trinity Health's hospital in Minot, a Level II trauma center about 15 miles south.
Where do families live?
On base in Balfour Beatty's Prairie Rose Estates, North Point, or Sunflower Haven, or in Minot's North Hill and South Hill neighborhoods 18 to 28 minutes away. Burlington and Surrey offer small-town districts on US-2. 2026 BAH for an E-5 with dependents is about $1,548 and for an O-3 about $2,175; confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
