Overview

Maxwell AFB is the schoolhouse for Air Force leadership. The 42nd Air Base Wing hosts Air University — Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, Air War College, the Barnes Center for enlisted PME, the Community College of the Air Force and the Holm Center that runs Officer Training School, AFROTC and the new Warrant Officer Training School — plus Civil Air Patrol headquarters and the 908th Flying Training Wing, the Reserve's MH-139A Grey Wolf formal training unit. Gunter Annex across town houses software-acquisition and cyber units. Between them the base supports about 42,000 people, and Air University graduates more than 50,000 resident students a year: SOS alone runs roughly 4,200 captains through in-residence, OTS courses start every few weeks, and ACSC and AWC each seat a full-year cohort.

Montgomery is Alabama's capital, a river city of about 200,000 with a deep civil rights history and a very hot, very humid summer. July highs average 92°F and about 53 inches of rain fall every year, with spring thunderstorms and the occasional tornado warning. What matters to a TDY traveler here: the University Inn is enormous but still fills for big class starts, the base is on the west side of town while most of the good rentals are east or north across the river, and I-65 and I-85 are your two roads to everything.

Weather

Humid subtropical: July highs average about 93°F with heavy humidity, January highs near 59°F with overnight lows around 35°F. Montgomery gets roughly 53 inches of rain a year, wettest in March, and afternoon thunderstorms are routine June through August.

Best months

October through early December and March through April

Tough months

June through September — 90-plus heat with dew points in the 70s, daily storms, and tornado watches in spring

Getting there

  • Fly into Montgomery Regional (MGM), about 9 miles and 15 minutes southwest of Maxwell via US-80 and I-65. It is a small airport with limited nonstops, so many travelers fly into Birmingham (BHM, about 1.5 hours north on I-65) or Atlanta (ATL, about 2.5 hours east on I-85) and drive. Rent a car; Montgomery has no practical transit to the base.
  • The Maxwell Boulevard main gate (I-65 Exit 172) is open 24/7. Day Street gate is Monday to Friday 0600 to 1400 inbound and outbound, then outbound only until 1800; Kelly Street gate is Monday to Friday 0600 to 1800. Gunter Annex is usually entered from Congressman Dickinson Drive, which has been the 24/7 gate there; confirm current hours on maxwell.af.mil since gate schedules change with manning.
  • The Visitor Center and pass office is Building 518 at 5164 Maxwell Blvd just outside the main gate, open Monday to Friday 0730 to 1630 and closed weekends, 334-953-4283. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport plus orders; if you arrive after hours without a DoD ID, check in with lodging and get sponsored through the gate.
  • Weekday traffic backs up on Maxwell Boulevard and Day Street between 0700 and 0800 as students arrive for class, and the whole base empties at 1600. Big graduation weeks (OTS, ACSC, AWC in May and June) fill the gates and every hotel in town, so book early.

Small-town Elmore County living on the Coosa River with acreage and Purple Star schools, farther out but quiet.

Commute: ~25-35 min

Insider tips

  1. 01Summer is brutal: 90-plus with dew points in the 70s from June through September. PT early, hydrate, and expect afternoon thunderstorms that flood Maxwell Boulevard underpasses.
  2. 02Spring is tornado season in central Alabama. Know where the shelter is in your building and your rental, and keep weather alerts turned on.
  3. 03Call the University Inn the day your orders drop; it is huge but big class starts (SOS, ACSC, AWC, OTS graduations) still generate non-availability. Ask for the number in writing so DTS goes smoothly.
  4. 04The Maxwell Boulevard gate is the only 24/7 entrance; Day Street goes outbound-only after 1400 and Kelly Street closes at 1800, so plan late returns through the main gate.
  5. 05If you are on a one-year ACSC or AWC PCS, the Prattville and Pike Road rental markets turn over every May and June — start looking in March and consider buying if you can resell to the next class.
  6. 06Montgomery Public Schools zoning drives where families live; call the School Liaison (334-953-6430) before you sign anything and ask about magnet school lottery deadlines.
  7. 07The Riverfront Inn DFAC feeds TDY officers and civilians, which is rare, and it is a lot cheaper than eating out every day of a five-week SOS class.
  8. 08Pack for both: Air University classrooms run cold and the parking lots run hot. A blazer or fleece for lectures and a change of shirt for the walk are standard student kit.

FAQ

Can I be reimbursed for a Maxwell crashpad on TDY?
Yes, with a non-availability number from the University Inn (334-953-3931). The FY2026 Montgomery rate is $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE, so a crashpad priced at or under $110 a night with an itemized receipt is fully reimbursable in DTS.
Which gate do I use and what do I need?
Use the Maxwell Boulevard main gate off I-65 Exit 172; it is open 24/7. Visitors without a DoD ID get a pass at the Visitor Center, Building 518, weekdays 0730 to 1630 (334-953-4283), with a REAL ID or passport and a copy of orders. Confirm gate hours on maxwell.af.mil before you travel.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 42nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. For emergencies call 911 or go to Jackson Hospital (1725 Pine St) or Baptist Medical Center South. TRICARE East is administered by Humana Military.
Where do Maxwell families live?
Prattville and Millbrook up I-65 for the short commute and Autauga and Elmore Purple Star schools; Pike Road and east Montgomery for newer homes and Pike Road Schools; on-base Hunt housing for the DoDEA PreK-8 school. Most PME families are within 15 to 30 minutes of the gate.
