Overview

Fort Novosel is the Home of Army Aviation. Renamed from Fort Rucker in 2023 in honor of Medal of Honor recipient CW4 Michael Novosel Sr., the post hosts the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence, which trains every Army rotary-wing aviator from the first day of Initial Entry Rotary Wing flight school through graduate-level courses in the AH-64E Apache at Hanchey Army Heliport. The 110th Aviation Brigade flies the training battalions, the 1st Aviation Brigade manages the students, the Warrant Officer Career College and Aviation NCO Academy run their own courses, and the Air Force's 23d Flying Training Squadron trains USAF helicopter pilots and career enlisted aviators alongside the Army. Lyster Army Health Clinic serves about 17,500 beneficiaries, a good proxy for how many people live and train here at any moment.

The place is the Wiregrass — flat, piney southeast Alabama, about 20 miles north of Dothan and 90 minutes from the Gulf beaches at Panama City. The post spreads across some 63,000 acres of Dale and Coffee counties, with Daleville at the main gate, Enterprise to the west, and Ozark to the east. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with July highs in the low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms; winters are mild, with January highs near 60 and only occasional freezes. For a TDY traveler that means a car is mandatory, weekends are for the lake or the beach, and the practical decision is which of three small towns to sleep in.

Weather

Humid subtropical. July averages highs around 93°F with heavy humidity and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms from June through August; January highs run near 59°F with lows in the upper 30s and only a handful of freezes each winter. Rain falls year-round, and tropical systems coming off the Gulf can bring days of heavy rain in late summer and early fall.

Best months

October through November and March through April

Tough months

June through September for heat and humidity, plus hurricane-season remnants; late winter can bring severe thunderstorms and tornado watches

Getting there

  • Fly into Dothan Regional (DHN), about 27 miles and 35 to 40 minutes southeast of the Daleville Gate via US-84 or AL-134. Montgomery (MGM) is about 1 hour 45 minutes north for more flight options; Atlanta (ATL) is roughly 3.5 hours.
  • The Daleville Gate off AL-84 is open 24/7 and hosts the main Visitor Control Center, open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, (334) 255-0797. This is the gate to use on first arrival.
  • The Ozark Gate on the east side is open 24/7 with a Visitor Control Center open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, (334) 255-0798. The Enterprise Gate on the west side is 24/7 but does not issue passes.
  • Faulkner Gate runs 4:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Newton Gate is a commuter gate open only 4:30 to 6:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays. Both are closed weekends and holidays, so confirm on home.army.mil/novosel/visit before planning around them.
  • Visitors without a CAC need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, state ID, or passport, and can pre-register at pass.aie.army.mil 5 to 14 days ahead. Passes run up to 30 days unsponsored, six months with documentation, or a year when sponsored. Access questions: (334) 255-0607.
  • Traffic is light by any big-base standard, but Rucker Boulevard in Enterprise and the Daleville Avenue approach back up for 15 to 20 minutes at the 0630 and 1630 shift changes and on flight-school graduation Fridays.

TDY lodging

On base

On-post lodging is the IHG Army Hotel, a Holiday Inn Express with the older Buildings 100 through 300 series behind it near 5th Avenue and Shamrock Street.

Pets
Pet-friendly units
  • On-post lodging is the IHG Army Hotel, a Holiday Inn Express with the older Buildings 100 through 300 series behind it near 5th Avenue and Shamrock Street.
  • Check-in for every building is at the Holiday Inn Express front desk in Building 308 on 6th Avenue; the local number is (334) 598-5216 and IHG Army Hotels central reservations is 1-877-711-8326.
  • Rooms include hot breakfast, Wi-Fi, guest laundry, a fitness center, and pet-friendly options, but long-course students fill much of the inventory, so book the moment orders are cut.
  • If the hotel can't cover your dates it issues a certificate of non-availability, which authorizes off-post lodging at the locality rate.
  • Confirm front desk hours and the current non-availability process with the hotel directly.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

Fort Rucker TDYs are long — a flight-school phase, an Apache or Black Hawk track, a Warrant Officer Career College class — and that is exactly the stay a furnished crashpad at or under $110 a night is built for: a real kitchen, a quiet bedroom to study for checkrides, and a fixed rate with a receipt that clears DTS. Base Crashpads doesn't have a listed property at Fort Rucker yet, but we're expanding into the Wiregrass; if you're a traveler who needs one or a homeowner in Enterprise, Daleville, or Ozark with a room to rent, get in touch and we'll connect you.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-post family housing is privatized under Corvias, which manages about 1,350 homes across the post's neighborhoods and completed a major renovation program in 2025.
  • Demand stays above 99 percent occupancy with a wait list, so apply the day you have orders.
  • Off post, Enterprise is the deepest rental market, with the most single-family homes and newer subdivisions; Daleville is smallest and cheapest; Ozark has older brick ranches at lower prices; and Dothan trades a longer commute for city amenities.
  • Unaccompanied students in flight school generally live in on-post quarters or the IHG hotel, but many double up in Enterprise rentals once they're allowed.

BAH 2026

  • Fort Rucker has its own military housing area covering Daleville, Enterprise, Ozark, and Dothan-area zip codes.
  • Public BAH sites disagree on the 2026 figures for this MHA, so we won't quote them here; run your grade and zip code on the DTMO BAH calculator at travel.dod.mil for the authoritative rate.
  • In general the Wiregrass is one of the lower-cost housing areas in the Army, and BAH typically covers a three-bedroom rental in Enterprise with room to spare.
NeighborhoodCommute

Enterprise

The main town: Boll Weevil Circle, chain restaurants, newer subdivisions, and the best public schools in the region

Commute: 15 min to the Enterprise Gate via Rucker Boulevard

Commute: 5 min to the Daleville Gate

Ozark

Quiet county seat with older homes, big lots, and easy access to Hanchey Heliport

Commute: 15 min to the Ozark Gate via Andrews Avenue

Dothan

Regional hub of about 70,000 with the mall, hospitals, and the most to do; a real commute

Commute: 35 to 40 min to the Daleville Gate via US-84

Schools & childcare

  • On post, Ellis D. Parker Elementary is a DoDEA school serving pre-K through grade 6 for families living in Corvias housing; on-post families attend Daleville City Schools for middle and high school.
  • Enterprise City Schools is the district most families target — Enterprise High School is one of the largest in Alabama and the system is consistently rated among the state's best.
  • Daleville City Schools and Ozark City Schools serve those towns; Dale County Schools covers the unincorporated areas around the post.
  • Dothan City Schools and several private options serve families who choose the Dothan commute.
  • Child Development Centers, School Age Care, and Youth Services run through Fort Rucker Child and Youth Services; register at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders because flight-school families keep the wait list long. The School Liaison Office can help with transfers.
06

Healthcare

  • Lyster Army Health Clinic is the on-post medical treatment facility: primary care, pharmacy, flight medicine and aviation physicals, behavioral health, and specialty clinics, serving about 17,500 beneficiaries. It is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room.
  • Fort Rucker is in the TRICARE East region, administered by Humana Military.
  • The nearest emergency room is Medical Center Enterprise, about 15 minutes west. Dale Medical Center in Ozark also has an ER.
  • Southeast Health in Dothan is the region's only Level II trauma center and the referral hospital for the Wiregrass, about 35 to 40 minutes from post.
  • The on-post pharmacy is at Lyster; TRICARE network pharmacies in Enterprise and Dothan cover after-hours needs.

  • The Landing and MWR clubs cover evenings.
Legal & finance

Legal Assistance, Finance, ACS (Army Community Service), and the Soldier for Life transition center are in the garrison support area; the Welcome Center handles in-processing for new arrivals.

Chapel & pets

Panama City Beach

The Gulf is about 90 minutes to two hours south down US-231, which makes a long weekend at Panama City Beach or the quieter state parks at St. Andrews the standard flight-school escape. Go in fall or spring; summer weekends are crowded and hotels spike.

Insider tips

  1. 01Book the IHG Army Hotel the day you get orders and ask about the Buildings 100 through 300 series if the Holiday Inn Express is full — same front desk, same rate.
  2. 02Use the Daleville Gate on your first day: it's the only Visitor Control Center open on weekends, and the Enterprise Gate can't issue passes at all.
  3. 03Pre-register any visitor at pass.aie.army.mil 5 to 14 days ahead; it turns a 45-minute VCC wait into a five-minute pickup.
  4. 04Flight-school graduations fall on Fridays and pack every hotel in Enterprise and Daleville with families — if your TDY overlaps, lock lodging early or price a crashpad.
  5. 05Enterprise is the town to stay in for dining and errands; Daleville wins on distance to the gate; Dothan is for the mall and the hospital, not for commuting.
  6. 06Summer afternoons bring near-daily thunderstorms; keep an umbrella in the car and expect flight-line schedules to slide.
  7. 07Get an Alabama fishing license plus a post recreation permit and you can fish Lake Tholocco and the post's ponds most evenings after class.
  8. 08Cell coverage drops on the back roads between heliports; download maps before driving out to Hanchey or Shell for the first time.

FAQ

What is the FY2026 per diem for Fort Rucker?
Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office. No current rate is quoted here. Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates. A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
How long are typical TDYs at Fort Rucker?
Long. Initial Entry Rotary Wing flight school runs the better part of a year including advanced airframe tracks; Aviation BOLC, Warrant Officer Career College, and the NCO Academy run weeks to months; instructor and evaluator TDYs vary. Many students are on PCS orders rather than TDY, which is why the towns around post have so many furnished rentals.
Is there Air Force lodging or does the 23d FTS use the Army hotel?
Fort Rucker is an Army post, so Air Force students and staff with the 23d Flying Training Squadron use the IHG Army Hotel and the same non-availability process. Confirm any squadron-specific guidance with the 23d FTS on arrival.
What's the closest airport, and should I rent a car?
Dothan Regional (DHN), about 35 to 40 minutes away with regional connections through Atlanta and Charlotte. Yes, rent a car or bring one — there is no public transit to the gates, the heliports are spread across the post, and everything worth doing off duty is 15 minutes to two hours away.
