Overview

Whiteman is the B-2 base. The 509th Bomb Wing and the Missouri Air National Guard's 131st Bomb Wing together own every operational B-2 Spirit — 19 jets after the 2022 mishap retirement — and they generate them for nuclear deterrence and global strike from a 5,566-acre base in the Missouri prairie. The Air Force Reserve's 442d Fighter Wing flies A-10s off the same runway, the 20th Attack Squadron flies MQ-9 Reapers, and Army Guard UH-60s round out the ramp. Roughly 4,000 active-duty airmen, about 1,000 civilians, and a few thousand Guard and Reserve members work here, with B-2 students, inspection teams, and Reserve drill weekends keeping a constant TDY churn.

The base sits just south of Knob Noster (population about 3,000) in Johnson County, 60-some miles east-southeast of Kansas City on US-50. Warrensburg, the county seat and home of the University of Central Missouri, is 10-15 minutes west. Weather is classic Midwest: humid 90-degree summers, real winters with ice and about 10 inches of snow, and a spring severe-weather season that means you should know where the shelter is. For a TDY traveler what matters is simple — there is one 24-hour gate, limited hotel stock, and a lot of driving between anything worth doing.

Weather

July averages highs near 89°F with lows around 70°F and heavy humidity; January averages around 41°F highs and 24°F lows. Expect roughly 40 inches of rain a year (June is the wettest month) and about 10 inches of snow, with ice storms and spring tornado watches part of life.

Best months

Late April to early June, and September through October

Tough months

July-August for heat and humidity; March-May for severe thunderstorms and tornado risk; January-February for ice and wind

Getting there

  • Fly into Kansas City International (MCI), north of the city. From there it is I-435 or I-29 through the metro, then I-70 east to US-50 (or US-50 the whole way through Lee's Summit) — figure an hour and 45 minutes without traffic. Rent a car; there is no shuttle or transit to Knob Noster, and everything from the DFAC to Walmart in Warrensburg is a drive.
  • Three gates: the Spirit Gate (west, off US-50) is the main gate and the only one open 24/7. The Arnold Gate on the north/Knob Noster side runs Monday-Friday 0600-1800, and the LeMay Gate on the south side is commercial traffic only, Monday-Friday 0600-1800. Confirm hours on whiteman.af.mil/baseaccess before you arrive — they change with force protection conditions.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at the Spirit Gate and operates around the clock. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or CAC, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; unsponsored visitors need a base sponsor to request a pass ahead of time. The base is closed to the general public.
  • Traffic is light by any standard, but US-50 through Warrensburg backs up at shift change and on UCM game days, and August brings Missouri State Fair traffic on US-50 and US-65 toward Sedalia. Deer are the real hazard on the two-lane roads at dawn and dusk.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • On-base family housing is privatized under Whiteman Family Homes (Balfour Beatty Communities), 301 Summit Dr, with about 890 homes from studio to four-bedroom; the base Housing Management Office is 660-687-1335 and Whiteman Family Homes is 660-687-0559.
  • Off base, 2025 guides put three-bedroom rents around $800-$1,200 in Knob Noster, $1,000-$1,500 in Warrensburg, and $900-$1,400 in Sedalia, with Warrensburg homes commonly selling in the $170,000-$250,000 range — cheap enough that many O-3s and senior NCOs buy.

BAH 2026

GradeWith dependentsWithout dependents
E-5$1,611$1,215
O-3$2,244$1,812
  • 2026 BAH for the Whiteman AFB MHA (MO162) is approximately $1,611 with dependents / $1,215 without for an E-5, and $2,244 with / $1,812 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables — a 9.3% jump over 2025, one of the largest in the Air Force.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Knob Noster

The gate town — Knob Noster R-VIII is a Purple Star, military-connected district with Whiteman Elementary actually on base, rents are the lowest around, and you can be at the Arnold Gate before your coffee cools.

Commute: ~5 min

Warrensburg

Where most families land: a college town of 19,000 with UCM, a walkable brick downtown, the Walmart and hospital, and newer subdivisions off US-50; Warrensburg R-VI schools are solid and three-bedrooms rent around $1,000-$1,500.

Commute: ~15 min

Sedalia

The bigger regional town to the east with more shopping, the State Fairgrounds, and the Katy Trail, plus cheaper houses; commute is easy on US-50 but you're 30 minutes from anything on base.

Commute: ~30 min

Leeton / Green Ridge / rural Johnson County

Acreage, quiet, and $700-$1,100 rents for those who want a shop and a few animals; expect gravel roads, well water, and a long drive to a grocery store.

Commute: ~20 min

Lee's Summit / eastern Kansas City suburbs

Top-tier schools, a spouse job market, and every restaurant chain known to man, at the cost of a 45-55 minute US-50 commute each way — popular with dual-income families and folks who plan to stay after separating.

Commute: ~50 min

Schools & childcare

  • Whiteman Elementary is on base but run by Knob Noster Public Schools (R-VIII); there are no DoD schools here. Base housing zones to Knob Noster schools, and the district is a Purple Star, nationally recognized military-connected district — Knob Noster High was ranked Missouri's top rural school for college and career readiness from 2019-2022.
  • Off base, Warrensburg R-VI is the other main choice, with Sedalia #200, Holden R-III, Crest Ridge R-VII, Leeton R-X, Chilhowee R-IV, and Kingsville R-I serving the outlying areas. Bus service is provided for kids living more than a mile from school.
  • The School Liaison Program is reached through the Military & Family Readiness Center at 660-687-7132 (DSN 312-975-7132); Knob Noster Public Schools' district office is 660-563-3186. Bring immunization records, Social Security numbers, and prior school records to enroll.
  • One Child Development Center on base offers full-day, extended, and school-year care from infants through school age, and there is a Youth Center for older kids. Waitlists are common at a base this size — request care on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders.
06

Healthcare

  • The 509th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital: three patient-centered medical homes with family medicine, pediatrics, mental health, pharmacy, and ancillary services, open weekday business hours (roughly 0730-1600, with a monthly training closure). There is no emergency room. Confirm the appointment line on whiteman.tricare.mil — published numbers vary.
  • For emergencies call 911. The nearest ER and inpatient care is Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, about 15 minutes west; Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia is the other option, and major trauma or specialty care goes to Kansas City.
  • Whiteman is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. Enroll or transfer your Prime enrollment before you arrive so you're not stuck with point-of-service costs.

Insider tips

  1. 01Tornado season is real here — March through June especially. Know where the shelter is in your building or crashpad, keep a weather app with alerts on, and don't try to outrun a storm on a two-lane road.
  2. 02Winter ice storms hit west-central Missouri harder than snow does. Keep a scraper, blanket, and phone charger in the car, and give yourself extra time on US-50 when it glazes over.
  3. 03The Spirit Gate is the only 24-hour gate. If you're on the Knob Noster side after 1800 or on a weekend, the Arnold Gate is closed — loop around to US-50.
  4. 04Call the Whiteman Inn early and get your non-availability number in writing. Lodging is tightest during B-2 class starts, nuclear surety inspections, 442d drill weekends, and the August State Fair.
  5. 05Family housing has 890 homes and a waitlist for the popular floor plans; get on it the day you have orders, and have a backup rental plan in Warrensburg.
  6. 06Rent a car at MCI, not in town — Warrensburg has very limited rental stock and nothing runs to base. Fill up in Warrensburg or Knob Noster; gas stations thin out fast on the county roads.
  7. 07Deer are everywhere at dusk on Route 132, Route 23, and the county roads. Slow down; a collision will end your TDY and your rental agreement.
  8. 08Pack for both seasons on a long TDY — a shirt-sleeves 90-degree afternoon and a 30-degree morning can happen in the same October week, and the summer humidity will surprise anyone coming from the West.

FAQ

Can I be reimbursed for a crashpad at Whiteman AFB?
Yes. Get a non-availability number from the Whiteman Inn (660-687-1844), then lodge commercially under the FY2026 standard CONUS rate for Johnson County — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE. A crashpad priced at or under $110 with an itemized receipt reimburses through DTS just like a hotel.
Which gate do I use when I arrive, and what do I need?
Use the Spirit Gate off US-50 — it's open 24/7 and the Visitor Control Center is there. Bring your CAC or a REAL ID license, registration, and proof of insurance. The Arnold Gate (Knob Noster side) is weekdays 0600-1800 only, and LeMay is commercial trucks only.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 509th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. Call 911 for emergencies; the closest ER is Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, about 15 minutes away, with Bothwell Regional in Sedalia as the other nearby option.
Where do families live near Whiteman AFB?
Most live on base in Whiteman Family Homes or in Warrensburg, 15 minutes west, for the schools and amenities. Knob Noster is closest and cheapest, Sedalia is 30 minutes east with more shopping, and some families commute 45-55 minutes from Lee's Summit for Kansas City schools and jobs.
