Overview
Fort Leonard Wood is the U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence, which means the Engineer School, the Military Police School, and the CBRN School all live here, along with the 1st Engineer, 14th MP, and 3rd Chemical brigades that run Basic Combat Training, OSUT, and AIT for those branches. Military OneSource counts about 5,400 active duty, roughly 12,000 trainees in the pipeline at any one time, and thousands of civilians and contractors, and that is before you add the Air Force's 368th Training Squadron, the Marine Corps Detachment, and the Navy detachment that send more than a thousand joint-service students a year through the engineer, equipment, and emergency management courses. Lieutenants in BOLC, captains in the career course, senior NCOs in leader courses, drill sergeant candidates, and instructors on TDY all cycle through the same small town at once.
The post sits in the south-central Missouri Ozarks on Interstate 44, midway between Rolla and Lebanon and about two hours from both St. Louis and Springfield. Waynesville is the county seat and St. Robert is the newer strip town that grew up around exit 161 and the Main Gate; together they are the entire local market. Summers are hot and humid, winters are gray with a few real ice and snow events, and spring brings thunderstorms and the occasional tornado warning, so a TDY traveler here wants a car, a place with a kitchen, and a plan for the weekends, because the good stuff is on the rivers and at the lake, not in town.
Weather
Waynesville averages a July high near 89 degrees with heavy humidity, and a January high around 44 with lows in the mid-20s. The area gets roughly 47 inches of rain a year, most of it in spring and early summer thunderstorms, and only about 10 inches of snow, though ice storms can shut the post's hills for a day or two.
Best months
April to early June and late September to October: warm days, cool nights, the rivers running clear, and fall color in the Ozark hardwoods.
Tough months
July and August for heat and humidity that make field training and outdoor PT brutal, and January to February for ice on the post's hilly roads and gray weeks that make a hotel room feel very small.
Getting there
- Waynesville-St. Robert Regional Airport (TBN, Forney Field) is on the installation itself, about ten minutes from the Main Gate. Contour Airlines is the only carrier, with daily service to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and, since June 2026, five flights a week to Nashville (BNA). Parking and Wi-Fi at the terminal are free, and you will still need a rental car or a ride once you land.
- Most travelers fly into St. Louis Lambert (STL), about two hours east on I-44, or Springfield-Branson National (SGF), about 90 minutes southwest on I-44. Both have full rental car counters; STL has more flights, SGF has less traffic. Kansas City is about three and a half hours.
- From I-44 take exit 161 for St. Robert and Fort Leonard Wood and follow Missouri Avenue south about two miles to the Main Gate (North), Building 100. The Main Gate and the South Gate are open 24 hours. The West Gate runs Monday through Friday from 4 a.m. to 9 p.m., and the East Gate runs weekdays from 5 to 8:30 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m.; both are closed on weekends. Confirm the current schedule on the garrison access-control page before you plan around a side gate.
- The Visitor Center is Building 100 at the Main Gate, 2624 Missouri Avenue. As of January 11, 2026 it closes daily from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. because of staffing, a temporary change the garrison says it will reverse when it can; visitors arriving overnight can still pull into the lanes and the guards run the checks and issue a temporary pass. Anyone 18 or older without a DoD ID needs a Real ID compliant license or passport plus a valid reason for access, and drivers need license, registration, and proof of insurance.
- Traffic is light by Army standards, but the Main Gate backs up at the 0600 to 0730 and 1600 to 1730 shift changes and on Thursday and Friday mornings when BCT graduation families arrive. Give yourself an extra 15 minutes on graduation days, and expect long lines at the Visitor Center on those mornings.
- There is no public transit between St. Robert and the post, and ride-share coverage is thin, so plan on driving. A rental car is worth it even for a short TDY; for a long course, bring your own vehicle.
TDY lodging

- On-post lodging is IHG Army Hotels, with four properties: Holiday Inn Express Foster Lodge, Holiday Inn Express Morelli Heights, Candlewood Suites Building 2020, and Warrior Lodge.
- Check-in for all of them runs through Building 2020 at 4990 Nebraska Avenue, about two miles south of I-44; directory listings give the front desk as 573-586-4800, and you can also book through IHG Army Hotels central reservations or the IHG Army Hotels website, so confirm the direct line when you call.
- Rooms include a hot breakfast, guest laundry, and free internet, Candlewood Suites has studio and one- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens for longer stays, and some rooms are pet friendly.
- Book as soon as your orders are cut, because BOLC, Captains Career Course, and drill sergeant course starts fill the hotels, and summer PCS and BCT graduation weekends push them over.
- If they cannot house you for your dates, the desk issues a certificate of non-availability so you can lodge off post at per diem; check with your schoolhouse first, since some courses block-book rooms.
- Family units and extended-stay availability are limited, so ask about the Candlewood when you book and confirm current policy with the hotel.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Fort Leonard Wood TDYs are long: BOLC runs four to five months, the Maneuver Support Captains Career Course about six, and senior NCO and joint-service engineer courses stretch for weeks, which is exactly the kind of stay where a furnished house in St. Robert or Waynesville with a kitchen, a washer, and a driveway beats a hotel room at exit 161. Base Crashpads does not yet have a listed property at Fort Leonard Wood, but we are expanding here and want to hear from you. If you own a home in St. Robert, Waynesville, Devils Elbow, or Dixon that could host military travelers at or below the $110 rate, or you are a student who needs a place for a course, send us an inquiry and we will connect you as listings come online.
Fort Leonard Wood crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing on post is privatized as Fort Leonard Wood Homes by Balfour Beatty Communities, more than 1,800 homes in seven neighborhoods with two- to four-bedroom floor plans assigned by rank and availability, no deposit or application fee, and utilities covered within an average band.
- The wait list runs longest in the summer PCS surge, so call the Housing Services Office and Balfour Beatty the day you get orders; Balfour Beatty broke ground in late 2025 on 69 new homes in the Woodlands neighborhood as part of a $50 million rebuild, so inventory is shifting.
- Off post, the market is small and lean: St. Robert has the apartments and newer duplexes, Waynesville has older single-family rentals on bigger lots, and most three-bedroom houses land under BAH.
- Rolla and Lebanon each add a half-hour commute but open up more listings, and the whole county turns over fast in June and July.
BAH 2026 · MHA MO163
- Fort Leonard Wood sits in the Fort Leonard Wood, MO military housing area, MHA MO163.
- Two independent base-housing sites list the same 2026 rates, effective January 1, 2026: an E-5 draws $1,479 with dependents and $1,290 without, and an O-3 draws $2,028 with dependents and $1,629 without.
- Confirm your own grade on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
St. Robert
The convenience town at exit 161: chain hotels, restaurants, the county's grocery stores, newer apartments and duplexes, and most of the short-term rentals. Not pretty, but everything is five minutes from everything else.
Waynesville
The county seat on Roubidoux Creek with a real courthouse square, Route 66 storefronts, Roubidoux Park and Spring, older houses on wooded lots, and a slower pace than St. Robert.
Rolla
College town east on I-44, home of Missouri S&T, with Phelps Health, a Walmart-and-then-some shopping strip, more restaurants, and the biggest rental inventory in the region.
Lebanon
Laclede County seat west on I-44, closer to Bennett Spring and the Lake of the Ozarks, with a Mercy hospital, affordable houses, and a small-town feel that some families prefer to the strip.
Schools & childcare
- Waynesville R-VI School District serves Fort Leonard Wood, St. Robert, and nearly all of Waynesville: 11 schools and about 6,000 students, with elementary schools on post (Thayer, Partridge, and Wood) and a sixth-grade center, middle school, and Waynesville High School in town. There are no DoDEA schools; the district is Purple Star designated and roughly three quarters military-connected.
- Nearby alternatives include Dixon R-I to the north, Laquey R-V to the southwest, and Rolla and Lebanon public schools for families who choose the longer commute, plus a handful of private and parochial options in Rolla.
- Child Development Centers, School Age Centers, and Youth Services on post run through Child and Youth Services; use MilitaryChildCare.com to get on wait lists as early as you can, because infant care fills fast in the summer surge.
- The Fort Leonard Wood School Liaison Office in Army Community Service helps with enrollment, transfers under the Interstate Compact, and special education handoffs, and can connect you with the district's military family liaison.
Healthcare
- General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital on post is a full-service military treatment facility with about 75 inpatient beds, a 24-hour emergency department, labor and delivery, primary care, and a range of specialty clinics; it is the medical home for most families and trainees. Details at leonard-wood.tricare.mil.
- Missouri is in the TRICARE East region, administered by Humana Military. Enroll or transfer your PCM through milConnect and expect off-post specialty referrals to go to Rolla, Springfield, or Columbia.
- The nearest civilian hospitals are Phelps Health in Rolla, about 30 minutes east, and Mercy Hospital Lebanon, about 35 minutes west; the closest Level I trauma centers are in Springfield (Mercy and CoxHealth) and St. Louis.
- The hospital pharmacy fills TRICARE prescriptions on post; there are retail pharmacies at Walmart and Walgreens in St. Robert and the Exchange for over-the-counter needs.
- Dental for active duty is through the post dental clinics; families use TRICARE Dental Program providers in St. Robert, Waynesville, and Rolla.

Route 66 and Devils Elbow
Pulaski County has 33 miles of the Mother Road, and the best stretch is the old alignment down to Devils Elbow, where the 1923 steel bridge crosses the Big Piney under 200-foot limestone bluffs. Grab the free driving tour brochure from the tourism bureau and do it on a Saturday morning.

Float the Big Piney and the Gasconade
The spring-fed Big Piney, Roubidoux, and Gasconade rivers are the local weekend: outfitters around Devils Elbow and Waynesville run canoe, kayak, and raft floats from a few miles to all day, and the fishing for smallmouth is good. Go early in summer for the clearest water.

Bennett Spring State Park
A classic Missouri trout park west of Lebanon where a 100-million-gallon-a-day spring feeds a stocked stream; buy a daily trout tag and fish from the March 1 opener through October, or just hike the trails and eat at the lodge. About 45 minutes from post.
Official site ↗Lake of the Ozarks and LORA
Missouri's big lake, with more than 1,100 miles of shoreline, is about an hour away, and Fort Leonard Wood MWR runs its own Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area with cabins, campsites, boat rentals, and a beach for ID card holders and contractors. Reservations are by phone only.
Official site ↗Uranus Fudge Factory and General Store
Yes, that is the name, and every Fort Leonard Wood student ends up there at least once. It is a roadside attraction on Route 66 in St. Robert with fudge, a sideshow museum, and a lot of jokes you can see coming; good for a cheap laugh and a graduation photo.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Call IHG Army Hotels the day your orders drop and ask specifically for the Candlewood Suites if you are staying more than a couple of weeks; the full kitchens make the per diem go a lot further.
- 02The Main and South gates are 24 hours, but the West and East gates are weekday-only with narrow windows, so do not plan a weekend commute around them.
- 03Avoid the Visitor Center on Thursday and Friday mornings; that is BCT graduation traffic, and the line can run an hour. Get your pass or your rental car registered earlier in the week.
- 04St. Robert has one Walmart and it is the county's grocery store; the Commissary on post is cheaper and calmer if you have access.
- 05Summer humidity is real. If your course has field time, bring more moisture-wicking gear than you think you need and plan PT before 0700.
- 06Ice, not snow, is what closes the post in winter. Follow the garrison's Facebook page and the post's road-condition notices for delayed reporting.
- 07Cell coverage drops off fast on the training areas and along the rivers, so download maps before a float trip.
- 08Rolla is 30 minutes east and has the nearest Target, Missouri S&T sports, and better restaurants; Springfield is 90 minutes for a real city weekend.
