From most Alamogordo neighborhoods it is about 10 to 15 minutes to the Main Gate — take US-70/US-54 (White Sands Boulevard) south out of town, then US-70 west six miles to the gate; from Tularosa figure 20 to 25 minutes via US-54 and US-70.

• Desert Skies (on base)

  ~5 min

  Soaring Heights' on-base neighborhood of single-family homes and duplexes with fenced yards, playgrounds and walking trails, with Holloman Elementary and Middle within the fence; the easiest option for families who want zero commute and neighbors on the same schedule.

• North Alamogordo / Wood Streets and Scenic Drive

  ~15 min

  The established side of town with mature trees, mountain views up Scenic Drive, older mid-century homes and the bulk of Alamogordo's schools; the most walkable and the closest thing to a neighborhood feel.

• Southeast Alamogordo

  ~12 min

  Newer subdivisions near the golf course and the south end of town, with the newest construction and the shortest run down US-70 to the gate; popular with dual-income and officer families buying on BAH.

• Tularosa

  ~25 min

  A small farming village 12 miles north on US-54 with pistachio orchards, cheaper lots and a slower pace; an easy commute but you will drive into Alamogordo for most shopping.
