Fort Leavenworth Crashpad — TDY lodging that feels like home

Looking for a Fort Leavenworth crashpad? The Combined Arms Center and the Command and General Staff College sit on the Missouri River bluffs just north of Kansas City, and every summer a new class of roughly a thousand majors, international officers, and joint students arrives for ten months while doctrine writers, instructors, and conference attendees rotate through on shorter orders. A furnished crashpad in Leavenworth, Lansing, or the Kansas City northland priced at or under the $110 government lodging rate beats a hotel room for a stay that is measured in weeks or months.

Mission

U.S. Army Combined Arms Center — the Army's intellectual center, home of the Command and General Staff College that educates roughly a thousand mid-career officers from every service and about 90 partner nations each year.

Host units

U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC) — the TRADOC command responsible for leader development, doctrine, and training across the Army, headquartered on post · U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) — the ten-month Command and General Staff Officer Course, the School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS), the Sergeants Major Course-adjacent leader programs, and satellite and distance courses · Mission Command Center of Excellence and the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate — the staff that writes the Army's doctrine and runs the Army University enterprise · U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and the Midwest Joint Regional Correctional Facility — the Department of Defense's only maximum-security prison, run by the 15th Military Police Brigade

Commute

Most TDY travelers stay in Leavenworth or Lansing and reach Grant Gate in 5 to 15 minutes by taking 4th Street or Metropolitan Avenue north to Grant Avenue; from the Kansas City northland it is 30 to 40 minutes via Missouri Route 45 or Interstate 29 and the Centennial Bridge on K-92.

Why stay in a crashpad near Fort Leavenworth?

Fort Leavenworth is the oldest continuously active Army post west of the Appalachians, and its business today is education: the Combined Arms Center writes the Army's doctrine, and the Command and General Staff College puts about a thousand officers a year through the Command and General Staff Officer Course, with SAMS, satellite courses, and a steady stream of shorter leader-development and staff courses layered on top. The class turns over on a school calendar, so July and August bring a wave of PCS families competing with TDY students, sponsors, and international officers for the same houses and hotel rooms, and the on-post IHG Army Hotels fill quickly around every course start and graduation. Leavenworth and Lansing are small river towns with a limited hotel inventory, and the next real lodging market is the Kansas City northland around Platte City, Parkville, and the airport corridor. Military OneSource counts about 2,900 active duty, 1,100 permanent-party students, and more than 5,000 civilians on post, so the demand for furnished mid-term housing never really goes away. A crashpad gives a student a real desk and kitchen for a ten-month academic year, gives a TDY doctrine writer a quiet place to work outside the classroom, and lets an international officer's family settle in without a hotel bill, all inside a 15-minute drive of Grant Gate.

Fort Leavenworth crashpad FAQs

What is the FY2026 per diem rate for Fort Leavenworth?
Leavenworth County is not a GSA non-standard area, so Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth, and Lansing use the standard CONUS rate for FY2026: $110 a night for lodging and $68 a day for meals and incidentals, with the first and last travel days paid at 75 percent, or $51. There is no seasonal rate. FY2027 rates take effect October 1, 2026, so check the GSA table if your course runs past the end of September.
Do I have to stay on post at Fort Leavenworth when I am TDY?
Army travelers are generally expected to check IHG Army Hotels first. On Fort Leavenworth that means Holiday Inn Express Hoge Hall on Grant Avenue plus the historic Otis Hall and Custer House rooms, and if they cannot house you for your dates they issue a certificate of non-availability that lets you lodge off post at per diem. CGSOC students on PCS orders usually go through Frontier Heritage Communities or the off-post rental market instead, so confirm with your course director what your orders say before committing to a place.
Where should I stay off post at Fort Leavenworth?
Leavenworth is the closest and simplest: the downtown and historic neighborhoods along 4th Street are five to ten minutes from Grant Gate. Lansing, just south on K-7, is newer and quieter and adds about five minutes. If you want the Kansas City side, Platte City, Parkville, and the northland near KCI are 25 to 40 minutes away across the Centennial Bridge and offer far more restaurants, rentals, and airport convenience at the cost of a river-crossing commute.
