Overview
Fort Leavenworth is the home of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, which makes it the Army's schoolhouse for thinking rather than shooting: the Command and General Staff College educates a class of roughly a thousand field grade officers a year in the ten-month Command and General Staff Officer Course, the School of Advanced Military Studies trains the planners the Army sends to corps and joint staffs, and the Mission Command Center of Excellence and the doctrine directorates write the manuals everyone else trains from. The 2026 CGSOC class had 966 students from every U.S. service, four interagency civilians, and 120 international officers from 92 countries. Add the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and the 15th Military Police Brigade, and Military OneSource counts about 2,900 active duty, 1,100 permanent-party students, and 5,175 civilians on post, with a class turnover every summer that reshuffles the whole housing market.
The post sits on the west bank of the Missouri River about 25 miles northwest of downtown Kansas City, with the small city of Leavenworth wrapped around its south side and Lansing just below that on K-7. Kansas City International is a half-hour drive across the river, which makes this one of the easier TDYs to fly into. The climate is full Midwestern: July highs near 90 with humidity, January highs around 39 with lows near 20, about 40 inches of rain, 17 inches of snow, and a spring tornado season. Grant Gate is the only 24-hour entrance, the Visitor Control Center keeps business hours, and everything you need in town is within a few minutes of the gate, so a car and a place with a kitchen make a long course here comfortable.
Weather
Leavenworth averages a July high near 90 degrees with real humidity, and a January high around 39 with lows near 20. The area gets about 40 inches of rain a year, heaviest in the May and June thunderstorm season, and around 17 inches of snow, with occasional ice that slows the post's bluff-top roads. Tornado season runs roughly April through October, so know where the shelter is in your building.
Best months
Late April to early June and September to October: warm days, cool nights, the river bluffs green or turning, and Weston's orchards and Kansas City's patios at their best.
Tough months
July and August for heat and humidity, and January to February for gray weeks, wind off the river, and the ice and snow days that make the Centennial Bridge commute miserable.
Getting there
- Kansas City International (MCI) is the airport: about 30 minutes to Grant Gate, most of it on Interstate 29 or Missouri Route 45 and then the Centennial Bridge (K-92) across the Missouri River into Leavenworth, or the southern route through Platte City and MO-92. Rental cars are on airport property in the consolidated facility.
- Grant Gate on Grant Avenue is the main gate and the only one open 24 hours a day, seven days a week; it is also the only gate that processes visitors at all hours, so route yourself there if you arrive at night or on a weekend.
- Sherman Gate on Sherman Avenue is a commuter-hours gate: inbound Monday to Friday 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., outbound Monday to Thursday 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Friday 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., closed weekends. Hancock Gate has been outbound-only on limited days recently, so treat it as closed and confirm current status on the garrison gate page before you plan on it.
- The Visitor Control Center is Building 4001 at 1 Sherman Avenue, phone 913-684-3600, open Monday to Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. plus 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month, closed Sundays and federal holidays. Visitors without a DoD ID need a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, and everyone 16 and older needs photo ID. You can pre-register online through the Army Visitor Portal at pass.aie.army.mil up to 10 days ahead.
- The morning rush at Grant Gate is real during the academic year: CGSOC classes start early and roughly a thousand students plus the civilian workforce arrive between 6:30 and 8 a.m. Leave ten extra minutes on class days and use Sherman Gate if you have a CAC and are coming from the west side of town.
- The base operator is 913-684-4021 (DSN 312-552-4021), and the garrison posts weather closures and gate changes on its Post Status page.

- The hotels fill around CGSOC course starts in August, graduations in June, and every major conference, so book as soon as you have orders.
- If lodging cannot house you for your dates, IHG issues a certificate of non-availability that lets you lodge off post at per diem; confirm front desk hours and the current pet policy on the IHG Army Hotels page before you arrive.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
A ten-month course, a multi-week doctrine conference, or a long courts-martial detail is exactly the kind of stay where a furnished house with a real desk, a kitchen, and a washer beats a hotel room by the gate, and Leavenworth's small hotel market means rooms at the $110 rate are gone by the time a class arrives. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Fort Leavenworth yet; we are expanding to CGSC and the Kansas City northland, so if you own a furnished place in Leavenworth, Lansing, or Platte County, or you are a student looking for one, reach out and we will connect you.
Fort Leavenworth crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-post family housing is privatized and run by Frontier Heritage Communities, a Michaels Organization company, with historic quarters on the old post and newer villages spread across the bluffs; the company broke ground in 2025 on 48 new townhomes aimed at O-3 and O-4 families.
- CGSOC students are assigned to villages by availability, bedroom eligibility, and priority, and you need a completed housing application with official orders to get on the wait list for the coming class, so apply the day you have orders.
- Off post, Leavenworth has historic homes near downtown and older subdivisions to the west, Lansing has newer neighborhoods along K-7, and the Kansas City northland around Platte City, Parkville, and Kansas City North has the deepest rental pool but a river-bridge commute.
- Everything turns over in June and July when the outgoing class leaves, so the best rentals are listed in spring and gone by early summer.
BAH 2026
- Fort Leavenworth is military housing area KS102.
- For 2026, an E-5 draws $1,815 a month with dependents and $1,569 without, and an O-3 draws $2,394 with dependents and $2,013 without, per the base housing office and VetCalc BAH tables, which agree.
- Confirm your own grade on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
Leavenworth (downtown and historic districts)
Victorian homes, brick streets, the riverfront, and the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum; walkable to a few restaurants and the county seat's shops. Closest option to the gate.
Lansing
Newer subdivisions and its own school district south of Leavenworth on K-7; quieter, more family-oriented, with the new-construction rentals many CGSOC families look for.
Platte City and Weston, Missouri
Across the river: Platte City is a small town with quick I-29 access, and Weston is a historic wine-and-distillery village with Weston Bend State Park; both are popular with families who want Missouri schools and a short hop to KCI.
Parkville and the Kansas City Northland
Suburban Kansas City north of the river with the most rentals, restaurants, and big-box shopping around Zona Rosa; the pick for anyone who wants city life and airport convenience on a ten-month stay.
Basehor and Tonganoxie
Rural-suburban Kansas towns southwest on K-7, with newer homes, acreage, and quick access to the Kansas Speedway and Legends area; better for permanent-party families than for TDY.
Schools & childcare
- Fort Leavenworth USD 207 is the on-post district: Bradley, Eisenhower, and MacArthur elementary schools (K-6) and Patton Junior High (7-9), all inside the gates, with enrollment built around the CGSC calendar and heavy support for mid-year arrivals.
- High school students in grades 10 to 12 attend Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth USD 453 under contract, with USD 207 providing free transportation from post; ninth graders can attend Patton or Leavenworth High.
- Off post, Leavenworth USD 453 serves the city and Lansing USD 469 serves Lansing; Platte County and Park Hill districts cover the Missouri side, which is one reason some CGSOC families choose the northland.
- The Child Development Center at 190 Hancock Avenue offers full-time, part-time, and hourly care for six weeks to five years, and CYS runs school-age care and the Harrold Youth Center's middle school and teen program; register through leavenworth.armymwr.com and expect wait lists around the summer class change.
- The Army University campus, the Combined Arms Research Library, and a Barton Community College office on post make it easy for spouses and students to knock out coursework during the academic year.
Healthcare
- Munson Army Health Center at 550 Pope Avenue is a clinic, not a hospital: primary care, pharmacy, behavioral health, and ancillary services, open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., appointments at 913-684-6250.
- Munson has no emergency room. For life-threatening emergencies call 911; the nearest civilian ER is Saint John Hospital in Leavenworth (Prime Healthcare), which has been the city's only full-service hospital since Saint Luke's Cushing Hospital closed in 2020.
- Fort Leavenworth is in the TRICARE West region under TriWest. TDY travelers on Prime should use Munson for routine care and follow the referral rules for anything urgent; retirees and families on Select can use the Kansas City network directly.
- For trauma or specialty care, the Kansas City metro has Level I trauma centers at the University of Kansas Health System and Research Medical Center, plus North Kansas City Hospital and Saint Luke's North on the northland side, each 35 to 50 minutes depending on the bridge.
- The Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center is on the south side of Leavenworth for veterans, and the Munson pharmacy fills outside prescriptions for TRICARE beneficiaries; check the Munson site for pharmacy hours and the drive-through.
On base
- Commissary & Exchange
The Commissary and Exchange main store are on post near Grant Avenue and walking distance from Hoge Hall, with an Express shoppette and gas station; hours change with the season and are posted on the Exchange and Commissary sites.
- Fitness
Gruber Fitness Center at 200 Reynolds Avenue (913-684-5120) is the main gym with 24/7 access by registration, and Harney Sports Complex adds a pool, racquetball and handball courts, basketball, and CrossFit space.
- Outdoor recreation
Trails West Golf Course is an 18-hole regulation course at 306 Cody Road with a lighted covered range and the Fairway Grille; Outdoor Recreation rents boats and gear, and the post has riverfront trails, the Buffalo Soldier Monument, and a disc golf course.
- Dining
On post there is a Fairway Grille at the golf course, the Exchange food court, and the Frontier Conference Center; Leavenworth's downtown along Delaware and 4th Streets has the pubs and diners, and Kansas City barbecue is a half hour away.
- Legal & finance
The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate runs legal assistance, wills, and powers of attorney, and Army Community Service offers financial readiness counseling; the Armed Forces Bank and a credit union branch are on post.
- Chapel & pets
Frontier Chapel, Pioneer Chapel, and the historic Memorial Chapel hold Protestant, Catholic, and other services; the post veterinary treatment facility handles routine care for pets, and Hoge Hall offers pet-friendly rooms for a fee.
Off duty

Frontier Army Museum
At 100 Reynolds Avenue on post, this free Army museum covers the frontier Army from 1804 to 1917: Lewis and Clark, the Santa Fe Trail, the Buffalo Soldiers, and a hall of horse-drawn vehicles. Open Tuesday to Friday 9 to 4 and Saturday 10 to 4; visitors without DoD ID need a pass from the VCC first.

Buffalo Soldier Monument and the historic post
The 13-foot bronze cavalryman dedicated in 1992 at then-Lt. Gen. Colin Powell's initiative anchors a memorial park to the 9th and 10th Cavalry. Walk the National Historic Landmark district around it: the Rookery (the oldest house in Kansas), the Main Parade, Memorial Chapel, and the Missouri River overlook.

C.W. Parker Carousel Museum
Leavenworth built carousels for the country in the early 1900s, and this downtown museum keeps a fully restored 1913 Parker carousel running, alongside the oldest primitive carousel in the United States and a 1950s aluminum Parker. Rides are cheap and it is a good rainy-Saturday stop with kids.

Weston, Missouri and Weston Bend State Park
Twenty minutes across the river, Weston is a preserved 1850s river town with wineries, Holladay Distillery tours, antique shops, and fall orchards. Weston Bend State Park next door has bluff-top hiking trails and one of the best Missouri River overlooks in the region.
Official site ↗National WWI Museum and Memorial
Kansas City's Liberty Memorial is the country's official World War I museum and one of the best military museums anywhere, with a glass bridge over a poppy field and a tower you can climb for the skyline view. Active duty get discounted admission; budget half a day.
Official site ↗Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art
Free admission, the giant shuttlecocks on the lawn, and a world-class Asian art collection make the Nelson-Atkins the easiest Kansas City culture day; it sits by the Country Club Plaza, so pair it with dinner and the Plaza lights in December.
Official site ↗Chiefs and Royals at the Truman Sports Complex
Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium share a parking lot about 45 minutes from post, and a CGSOC year overlaps a full Chiefs season and most of a Royals season. Chiefs tickets are hard and expensive; Royals tickets are cheap, and both offer military discounts on select games.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Pre-register any visitor at pass.aie.army.mil up to 10 days out; the VCC closes at 4 p.m. on weekdays and only opens one Saturday a month, and Grant Gate after hours means waiting while security runs the check.
- 02Grant Gate is the only 24/7 gate. If you are coming from Lansing or the Missouri side after 5:30 p.m. or on a weekend, do not aim for Sherman or Hancock.
- 03Book IHG Army Hotels the day you get orders for anything in August or June; CGSOC starts and graduations, plus international student arrivals, fill Hoge Hall weeks ahead.
- 04Per diem here is the standard $110 rate, which is easy to beat in Leavenworth and Lansing but hard to hit at Kansas City northland hotels during Chiefs home games and big conventions; check the calendar before you pick the Missouri side.
- 05The Centennial Bridge (K-92) is the only river crossing between Leavenworth and the northland; a wreck or ice on it turns a 30-minute commute into an hour, so Missouri-side residents want a flexible start time.
- 06Get the Class of 2026 or 2027 Frontier Heritage housing application in the moment you have PCS orders; villages are assigned by priority and availability, and the good historic quarters go to early applicants.
- 07Kansas City International is 30 minutes away, which makes weekend flights home and visiting family trips easy; the consolidated rental car facility and cell phone lot make pickups painless.
- 08Bring layers and a good ice scraper: the post sits on a windy bluff, winter mornings hit the teens, and the summer humidity makes the outdoor PT track a 6 a.m. affair.
