Overview

McConnell is AMC's tanker base on the plains. The 22nd Air Refueling Wing flies the KC-46A Pegasus and the KC-135R Stratotanker, backed by the Air Force Reserve's 931st Air Refueling Wing as a classic associate and the Kansas Air National Guard's 184th Wing, which runs intelligence, cyber, and mission-support squadrons rather than aircraft. Military OneSource counts about 3,066 active-duty airmen, 1,785 Guard and Reserve members, 822 civilians, and 3,689 family members on and around the base, plus nearly 5,000 retirees in the Wichita area. McConnell took delivery of the Air Force's first operational KC-46 in January 2019 and is programmed for 36 of them, so aircrew qualification, Boeing field support, and inspection traffic keep the visitor count high year-round.

The base sits four miles southeast of downtown Wichita, wedged between Spirit AeroSystems and the Kansas Aviation Museum on the old municipal airport. Wichita is a real city of about 400,000 — cheap to live in, easy to drive, and proud of its aviation history — with a climate that swings from 100-degree Julys to ice-storm Januaries and a spring severe-weather season you should take seriously. For a TDY traveler the things that matter are simple: Rock Road is your main artery, the Main Gate never closes, and everything from the commissary to a decent steak is within 15 minutes.

Weather

Wichita averages a 42°F high and 22°F low in January and a 91°F high and 69°F low in July, with about 34 inches of rain (June is the wettest month) and roughly 13 inches of snow a year. NWS Wichita counts about 12 days at or above 100°F annually, and the wind almost never stops.

Best months

April to mid-May and late September through October

Tough months

April through June for severe thunderstorms, hail, and tornado season; July and August for triple-digit heat; January and February for ice storms that shut down Rock Road

Getting there

  • Fly into Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT) on the west side of town. The drive to the Main Gate is about 20 minutes: Kellogg (US-54/400) east across the city, then south on Rock Road. Wichita has no practical transit for a TDY schedule, so book a rental car — ICT's rental counters are in the terminal and the lot is a short walk.
  • The Main Gate on South Rock Road (Kansas Street entrance) is open 24/7, and the housing-area gate on the east side off Rock Road is also 24/7. The West Gate on George Washington Boulevard runs weekdays only, roughly 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with different entry and exit windows and closed on weekends and holidays. Confirm current gate hours on mcconnell.af.mil before you plan a late arrival through anything other than the Main Gate.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at the Main Gate on Kansas Street (Bldg 169). Military OneSource lists it open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; other listings show 8 to 4, so call the base operator at 316-759-6100 to confirm. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and proof of insurance, and have your sponsor or orders ready — visitors without a CAC need a sponsored pass.
  • Traffic here is mild by big-city standards, but Rock Road backs up at Kellogg during the 7-to-8 a.m. and 4-to-6 p.m. rushes, and Spirit AeroSystems shift changes flood Oliver and MacArthur right next to the base. In winter, Rock Road and the Kellogg overpasses ice first; in spring, check the weather radar before you drive because storms move fast across the flat ground.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing at McConnell is privatized — two- to four-bedroom single-family homes and duplexes, pet friendly, with lawn care and 24-hour maintenance included.
  • Published listings name both Mayroad and Corvias as the partner, so confirm who currently manages the community with the Military Housing Office at 316-759-3171/3173 (unaccompanied housing: 316-759-4611).
  • Off base is cheap by Air Force standards: Wichita's average apartment rent is about $952 (2026), with one-bedrooms around $857, two-bedrooms around $1,064, and three-bedrooms around $1,254, and the typical home value is roughly $203,000.
  • With those numbers, a lot of families on a three-year tour buy in Derby or Andover and cover the mortgage with BAH.

BAH 2026 · MHA KS101

  • McConnell is in MHA KS101 (Wichita).
  • Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $1,377 with dependents and $1,212 without; an O-3 draws approximately $1,938 with dependents and $1,572 without, a 4.8 percent increase over 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Commute: ~10 min

Southeast Wichita (Rock Road corridor)

Closest to the gate and where most TDY travelers land; apartments and 1970s-90s ranch houses near Harry, Pawnee, and Rock, with the chain restaurants and a Target within five minutes.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Andover

East-side suburb with highly rated Andover USD 385 schools, newer homes, and a slightly higher price tag; you take Kellogg to Rock Road or 143rd to Pawnee.

Commute: ~20 min

Haysville and Mulvane

Small-town, lower-cost, bigger lots south and southwest of the base; Haysville USD 261 and Mulvane USD 263 pull a fair number of enlisted families.

Schools & childcare

  • There are no on-base schools. Base housing is zoned to Derby Public Schools (USD 260), which is why Derby feels like a base town.
  • Derby USD 260 holds the Kansas Purple Star designation across all 12 of its schools, with roughly 11-13 percent of its 7,300 students military-connected. Wichita USD 259 is the largest district in Kansas with magnet and IB programs, Andover USD 385 is the east side's top-rated option, and Haysville USD 261 serves families south of the base.
  • The McConnell School Liaison Program Manager is listed at 316-759-3326 and handles enrollment, IEP transfers, and district comparisons — call before you sign a lease if you have a student with services.
  • The on-base Child Development Center is at 316-759-4223; register early on MilitaryChildCare.com because infant slots run a waitlist. Family Child Care homes in base housing and the youth center's school-age program pick up the overflow.
06

Healthcare

  • The 22nd Medical Group runs an outpatient clinic in Bldg 250 with primary care, pharmacy, dental, and a handful of specialty services — no emergency room and no inpatient beds. The Central Appointment Line is 316-759-6300 (weekdays; Thursday opens later); confirm hours on mcconnell.tricare.mil.
  • For emergencies go to Rock Regional Hospital in Derby (the closest ER, about 10 minutes down Rock Road), Wesley Medical Center (550 N. Hillside), or Ascension Via Christi St. Francis (929 N. St. Francis) downtown — both major Wichita hospitals are about 15 minutes away and Wesley has the region's Level I trauma center.
  • McConnell is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 1, 2025. Update DEERS and your PCM assignment when you arrive.

Eat like a local

Wichita invented Pizza Hut and White Castle, but the local order is a Nu-Way loose-meat sandwich, a Spangles burger, and anything from the Nifty Nut House. The Rock Road and East Kellogg corridor near the base has every chain you need at 11 p.m. after a late sortie.

Insider tips

  1. 01Tornado season is real here. April through June, know where the nearest interior room or shelter is in your crashpad or hotel, keep phone alerts on, and do not try to outrun a wall cloud on Kellogg.
  2. 02Book the Air Capital Inn the day your orders drop — lodging itself warns that weekends and the entire summer run tight, and drill weekends for the 931st and 184th fill the rest. Get the non-availability number in writing before you book off base.
  3. 03Use the Main Gate on Rock Road for anything outside business hours; the West Gate on George Washington Boulevard is weekday-only and has separate entry and exit windows.
  4. 04Wichita is a REAL ID gate. A standard license without the star will get you turned around at the Visitor Center, and your sponsor has to be reachable.
  5. 05Winter is ice more than snow. A January ice storm will close Rock Road and cancel the flying schedule; pack real boots and a scraper even if the forecast says 50 degrees on the day you fly in.
  6. 06The wind is constant and July is brutal — 12 days a year hit 100°F. If you are running the fitness test outside, do it at 6 a.m.
  7. 07Derby is the base town: if you PCS with kids, the housing waitlist and the Derby USD 260 boundary both matter, so call the Military Housing Office and the School Liaison before you sign anything.
  8. 08Space-A out of McConnell is worth watching — tankers head to Europe and the Pacific regularly, and the passenger terminal posts its 72-hour schedule through the 22 FSS site.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at McConnell on TDY, and how does reimbursement work?
Yes, if the Air Capital Inn is full. Call 316-759-6999 first; if there is no room you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Wichita rate of $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE ($51 on travel days). A crashpad at or under $110 reimburses through DTS just like a hotel.
Which gate should I use when I arrive, and what do I need?
The Main Gate on South Rock Road (Kansas Street) is open 24/7 and is where the Visitor Control Center sits. Bring a REAL ID license, registration, insurance, and your orders; visitors without a CAC need a sponsor. The West Gate is weekdays only, so do not plan a night arrival through it. Call 316-759-6100 to confirm current Visitor Center hours.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 22nd Medical Group is an outpatient clinic with no emergency room. Emergencies go to Rock Regional Hospital in Derby, Wesley Medical Center, or Ascension Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, all 10 to 15 minutes away. McConnell is in the TRICARE West Region under TriWest.
Where do McConnell families live?
Derby, just south of the base on Rock Road, is the default — Purple Star schools and a 10-minute commute. Southeast Wichita is closest for singles, Andover draws families chasing top-rated schools, and Haysville and Mulvane offer the cheapest square footage. With 2026 BAH for an E-5 with dependents at roughly $1,377 and Wichita's average rent under $1,000, most families have options; confirm your rate on the DTMO BAH calculator.
