Overview

Hurlburt Field is the home of the Air Commandos and the headquarters of Air Force Special Operations Command. The 1st Special Operations Wing is the host, flying the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, the CV-22B Osprey, the MC-130J Commando II, the U-28A and the MQ-9 out of five operational squadrons, alongside 46 partner units from five major commands — including the 24th Special Operations Wing (special tactics), the 492d SOW and the USAF Special Operations School, and the 505th Command and Control Wing. More than 21,000 people are connected to the base: about 7,600 active duty, 1,100 reservists, 1,900 civilians, 1,000 contractors and 9,600 family members. Between aircrew qualification, special tactics pipelines, the schoolhouse and joint exercises, Hurlburt runs a TDY tempo out of proportion to its 6,700 acres.

The base sits on Santa Rosa Sound along US-98, just west of Mary Esther and Fort Walton Beach in Okaloosa County, in the Central time zone. This is the Emerald Coast: sugar-white beaches, humid subtropical weather, and a tourist economy that swings hard between a sleepy winter and a packed summer. For a TDY traveler that matters more than at most bases, because lodging rates, hotel availability and US-98 traffic all move with the beach season. Plan around it and Hurlburt is one of the easiest bases in the Air Force to enjoy.

Weather

Fort Walton Beach averages an 88°F high in July and a 45°F low in January, with roughly 52-66 inches of rain a year depending on the dataset and July the wettest month at nearly 6 inches. The muggy season runs from mid-April to late October, and hurricane season is June 1 through November 30.

Best months

April-May and late September-October

Tough months

June-August for heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms and peak tourist crowds; September-October for hurricane risk

Getting there

  • Fly into Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS), about 14 miles northeast of the base on the Eglin reservation; it is roughly a 30-minute drive south on FL-85 then west on US-98. Pensacola (PNS) is 42 miles west and often has more flights and cheaper fares, about an hour on US-98 or I-10. You will want a rental car — there is no practical transit between the airport, the base and the beach towns.
  • The main gate on US-98 and the back gate are both listed as open 24/7 on the base housing gate page. Kerwood Gate is closed until further notice. Gate posture changes with FPCON and special events, so confirm on hurlburt.af.mil or the 1st SOW Facebook page before a late arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at 1 Hume Drive, across US-98 from the main gate on the sound side, phone 850-884-2310. Hours are Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Anyone without a DoD ID needs a visitor pass; bring a REAL ID-compliant license and, for a vehicle, registration and proof of insurance.
  • US-98 is the only road along this stretch of coast, and it carries the beach traffic. Summer weekends and the afternoon commute between Fort Walton Beach and the Brooks Bridge into Destin can add 20-30 minutes; spring break (March-April) and the July 4 weekend are the worst. Coming from Navarre on the west side, the drive is usually smoother.

The crashpad option

Our Palms of Destin crashpad is a 2 bed / 2 bath furnished condo in Destin, about 30 minutes east of the main gate along US-98, with a full kitchen, washer and dryer, and resort amenities. It is priced inside the Fort Walton Beach per diem rate with DTS-ready receipts, so a non-availability number from the Commando Inn is all you need to book it on orders.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing at Hurlburt is privatized and managed by Corvias Property Management (850-344-0220, 123 McMillan Street; after-hours emergency maintenance 850-344-0251), with the Military Housing Office in the same building at 850-884-3188 or 850-884-7505, open weekdays 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Waitlists run by rank and bedroom count and are longest in the summer PCS surge, so register early.
  • Off base, 2025 rents in Fort Walton Beach range from about $1,000 for a small apartment to $3,000 for a large house, and a 3-4 bedroom home in Navarre averages roughly $2,450 a month.
  • Median home prices run about $323,000 in Mary Esther, $335,000-$340,000 in Fort Walton Beach, and $625,000 in Destin.

BAH 2026

  • Hurlburt shares the Fort Walton Beach / Eglin military housing area.
  • Per published 2026 tables, E-5 BAH is approximately $2,433 with dependents and $2,157 without; O-3 is approximately $3,399 with dependents and $2,592 without, up 0.4% from 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Mary Esther

The town at the gate — modest 1970s-90s ranch homes, quiet streets, Florosa and Mary Esther Elementary zoning, and a median price around $323,000, which is why so many junior enlisted and dual-military couples land here.

Commute: ~5-10 min

Navarre

The AFSOC family default: the biggest house for your BAH, newer subdivisions off US-98 and FL-87, Santa Rosa County schools, and the quietest beach on the coast, at the cost of being 15 miles from anything else.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Fort Walton Beach

The real town with the commissary-run errands, downtown on the sound, older homes in the $335,000 range, Bruner Middle and Fort Walton Beach High, and an easy shot down US-98 to either Hurlburt or Eglin.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Shalimar and Wright

Between the two bases on Eglin Parkway — a good pick for dual-base couples or anyone who wants Eglin's hospital close, with a mix of mid-century homes and newer builds and solid Okaloosa schools.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Destin

Resort condos and gated golf communities with a $625,000 median, the best restaurants on the coast, and the Brooks Bridge between you and the gate every morning — better for TDY crashpads and dual-income families than a tight BAH budget.

Commute: ~30 min

Schools & childcare

  • No schools on base. Students living in Hurlburt family housing are zoned to Florosa Elementary (a small share to Mary Esther Elementary), Bruner Middle School and Fort Walton Beach High School in the Okaloosa County School District; active-duty base residents also have school-of-choice options at any school with capacity if they provide transportation.
  • Okaloosa County School District is a Florida Purple Star District of Distinction, one of five in the state, and every district school holds Purple Star status for military-connected students. Families in Navarre fall under Santa Rosa County District Schools, also a Purple Star district.
  • School Liaison: Dr. Mackinley Cross, 117 McMillan Street, Bldg. 90304, 850-884-6938 (cell 850-280-5766), mackinley.cross@us.af.mil or hurlburtfieldcyes@us.af.mil.
  • The main Child Development Center is at 108 McMillan Street, 850-884-6664. Put your request in on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders — infant and toddler spots carry a wait, especially through the summer PCS season.
06

Healthcare

  • The 1st Special Operations Medical Group at 113 Lielmanis Avenue is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital, open Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; main line 850-881-1020, appointment line 850-884-7882, and the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal for booking. There is no emergency room on Hurlburt.
  • For emergencies call 911 or drive to the nearest civilian ER in Fort Walton Beach, about 15 minutes east on US-98; the Eglin AFB hospital in Valparaiso also has an emergency department for beneficiaries roughly 25-30 minutes north. Call the Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-TRICARE for anything in between.
  • Hurlburt is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military.

  • Aderholt is a short walk from the Commando Inn.

Newcomers
  • Military & Family Readiness Center, 220 Lukasik Ave, Bldg. 90213, 850-884-5441.
  • Hurlburt Library at 443 Cody Ave (850-884-6266) is a good quiet-work spot on TDY.

Just outside the fence at the main gate, the Air Park lines up the aircraft of AFSOC's history — gunships, Combat Talons, helicopters — beside memorials to the Air Commandos who flew them. It is free, open to the public, and the right first stop for a newly arrived family.

Navarre Beach

Fifteen minutes west on US-98, Navarre Beach is the quietest stretch of sugar sand on the coast, with the 1,545-foot Navarre Beach pier and the Gulf Islands National Seashore running toward Pensacola Beach. Weekday evenings after a duty day are the sweet spot.

Destin Harbor and the Emerald Coast beaches

Thirty minutes east across the Brooks Bridge, Destin's HarborWalk is the charter-fishing capital of the Gulf — book a half-day trip for red snapper in season — and Henderson Beach State Park has the best public beach access. Crab Island, the sandbar in the bay, is a pontoon-boat party in summer.

Okaloosa Island and the Gulfarium

Between Fort Walton Beach and Destin, Okaloosa Island has the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, the Boardwalk, and the Okaloosa Island Pier. Ten to fifteen minutes from the gate, it is the easy family evening when you do not want to fight Destin traffic.

Santa Rosa Sound on the water

Rent a pontoon or a center console from the Hurlburt Marina across US-98 from the gate and you are on Santa Rosa Sound in minutes — flat, protected water for fishing, tubing, or running to the sandbars near Navarre. The dive shop can set up Gulf wreck and reef dives.

Blackwater River and the Panhandle backcountry

About an hour north, Blackwater River State Forest and Blackwater River State Park near Milton offer tannin-dark kayaking, tubing and camping on some of the clearest sand-bottom rivers in the country. It is the antidote to beach crowds in July.

Pensacola and the National Naval Aviation Museum

An hour west, the National Naval Aviation Museum at NAS Pensacola is free and worth a full day, and the Blue Angels practice over the field most Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in season. Pair it with Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island.

Insider tips

  1. 01Per diem is seasonal here and it matters: lodging drops to $110 from November through February and jumps to $260 in June and July. If you can pick your TDY dates, spring and fall get you a better room for the money; if you cannot, book lodging the day orders drop.
  2. 02The Commando Inn front desk is 24/7, but rooms are not — CV-22 and AC-130J class cycles fill it. Request a non-availability number as soon as you are told the Inn is full so your off-base lodging is reimbursable from night one.
  3. 03Hurricane season runs June through November and this coast has taken direct hits (Ivan in 2004, Sally in 2020). Keep a go-bag, know your evacuation route north on FL-85 or FL-87, and follow the 1st SOW Facebook page for base status.
  4. 04US-98 is the only road. Between Fort Walton Beach and the Brooks Bridge it crawls on summer weekends and spring break; leave 30 minutes early from Destin in July and build the commute into your rental-car decision.
  5. 05The Visitor Control Center closes at 5 p.m. every day. If you are sponsoring someone without a DoD ID, get their pass in daylight; the main gate and back gate themselves are 24/7 per the base housing gate page, but confirm before a red-eye arrival.
  6. 06Afternoon thunderstorms from June through September are a daily event — schedule beach time and outdoor runs for the morning, and expect flight-line delays during lightning-within-five-miles calls.
  7. 07PCS families: start the Corvias housing application and MilitaryChildCare.com request before you leave your losing base. Summer waitlists for both family housing and infant CDC spots are the longest of the year.
  8. 08Pack for both seasons if you are here across a winter TDY — January lows in the mid-40s with wind off the sound feel colder than the number, and the water is too cold to swim until late April.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at Hurlburt Field on TDY and get reimbursed?
Yes, when the Commando Inn cannot house you. Call 850-884-7115 or check af.dodlodging.net first; if no room is available you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Fort Walton Beach rate — $110 to $260 a night depending on the month — plus $86 M&IE. Our Palms of Destin crashpad is priced inside that rate with DTS-ready receipts.
Which gate should I use and what do I need to get on base?
Use the main gate on US-98 in Mary Esther; it and the back gate are listed as 24/7, while Kerwood Gate is closed until further notice. A CAC or DoD ID gets you through. Without one, stop at the Visitor Control Center at 1 Hume Drive across US-98 from the gate (850-884-2310), open weekdays 6 a.m.-5 p.m. and weekends 7 a.m.-5 p.m., with a REAL ID license and vehicle registration and insurance.
Is there a hospital at Hurlburt Field?
No. The 1st Special Operations Medical Group (850-881-1020, appointments 850-884-7882) is an outpatient clinic open weekdays 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. with no emergency room. For emergencies call 911 or go to the civilian hospital in Fort Walton Beach about 15 minutes away, or the Eglin AFB hospital emergency department about 25-30 minutes north.
Where do Hurlburt families live?
On base in Corvias-managed family housing (850-344-0220), or off base in Mary Esther and Fort Walton Beach for the shortest commutes, Navarre for the most house per BAH dollar and quieter beaches, Shalimar and Wright for dual-base couples, or Destin if the budget allows. Students in base housing attend Florosa Elementary, Bruner Middle and Fort Walton Beach High in Okaloosa County, a Purple Star District of Distinction.
