Overview
MacDill is Air Mobility Command's tanker base on Tampa Bay and, more than that, the home of two combatant commands. The 6th Air Refueling Wing flies KC-135 Stratotankers that refuel bombers, fighters, and cargo aircraft worldwide, with the Reserve's 927th ARW flying the same jets as an associate wing. USCENTCOM and USSOCOM run their headquarters from the base, which is why the population is joint and international: more than 7,400 Air Force members, 16,900 joint-service personnel, 9,000-plus civilians and contractors, and representatives from 57 coalition nations, plus 134,000 retirees in the area.
The base occupies the southern tip of the Interbay Peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides and by South Tampa on the fourth. That geography is the whole story for a TDY traveler: there is one 24/7 gate on Dale Mabry Highway, the commute funnels through South Tampa, and hurricane season from June through November is not theoretical. Helene flooded low-lying parts of the base in September 2024 and Milton forced a KC-135 evacuation days later. Expect 90-degree summer highs with daily afternoon thunderstorms, and a winter mild enough that per diem rises when the snowbirds arrive.
Weather
Tampa averages a 91°F high in July with roughly 7.75 inches of rain, and a 71°F high in January with about 2.65 inches. Annual average high is 83°F; August is the wettest month and nearly every summer afternoon brings a thunderstorm.
Best months
November through April
Tough months
June through October — heat indexes over 100°F, daily lightning storms, and hurricane season, with September and October the most active months for the Gulf coast
Getting there
- Fly into Tampa International (TPA), about 10 miles and 20 minutes north of the base. Get a rental car; the base sits at the dead end of the Interbay Peninsula and there is no practical transit. From TPA follow Westshore Boulevard south to Interbay Avenue, turn onto South Dale Mabry, and the main gate is two blocks down. A taxi or rideshare runs roughly $45-55.
- The Dale Mabry Gate is the only 24/7 gate. Bayshore Gate opens early morning and closes in the evening on weekdays with shorter weekend hours; the MacDill Gate near Port Tampa is inbound-only in the morning rush and outbound-only in the afternoon; the Tanker Way Gate is the commercial vehicle entrance with a short morning POV window. Sources list slightly different hours, so confirm on the base gate fact sheet at macdill.af.mil before an early or late run.
- The Visitor Control Center is the white building just outside the Dale Mabry Gate at 6801 S. Dale Mabry Hwy, open Monday-Friday 6 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; 813-828-2737. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and proof of insurance. After hours, passes are issued at the Dale Mabry Gate only, and the Trusted Traveler program is suspended.
- Dale Mabry Highway backs up from Gandy Boulevard to the gate between 6:30 and 8 a.m. and again from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Bayshore Boulevard is the scenic alternative from downtown. Gasparilla in late January closes Bayshore for the parade, and any tropical system can put the base in limited operations, so watch MacDill's official social media.

MacDill AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing is privatized as Harbor Bay at MacDill, run by The Michaels Organization; the community office is at 8414 Fortress Drive, 813-840-2600, and the redevelopment plan totals 527 two- to four-bedroom homes and duplexes.
- Recent tenant lawsuits over mold are worth reading before you sign.
- Off base, Tampa's median home value was about $400,000 in 2024 with average rent near $2,965; South Tampa two-bedrooms run $2,200-$3,000-plus while Brandon and Riverview two-bedrooms land closer to $1,600-$2,000.
- Florida requires PIP auto insurance and registration within 90 days for residents, and premiums run high.
BAH 2026
- 2026 BAH for the Tampa MHA: E-5 approximately $2,709 with dependents and $2,187 without; O-3 approximately $3,081 with dependents and $2,919 without, per published 2026 tables (up about 0.6% from 2025).
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
South Tampa (Palma Ceia, Ballast Point, Interbay)
Walkable bungalows and new-build townhomes straight up Dale Mabry from the gate, with Bayshore Boulevard runs and Plant High School, at a price that eats most of a BAH check.
Westchase and Carrollwood
Master-planned suburbs northwest of the airport with good Hillsborough schools and more house for the money, but you fight Dale Mabry or the Veterans Expressway every morning.
Brandon and Riverview
The value play east of the bay: newer subdivisions in Riverview, mature neighborhoods in Brandon, rents that fit E-5 BAH, and a Selmon Expressway toll commute.
Apollo Beach
Canal-front homes and manatees at the power plant south of the Alafia River, popular with boaters willing to trade drive time for a dock.
St. Petersburg
Across the Gandy Bridge with a downtown waterfront, breweries, and Gulf beaches 20 minutes farther west; the bridge commute is fine until a crash or a storm surge closes it.
Schools & childcare
- Tinker K-8 School sits on base at 8207 Tinker St (813-840-2043) and is a Hillsborough County public school serving base families; a DoD grant has been awarded to rebuild and expand it. On-base students bus to Monroe Middle and Robinson High for the grades Tinker doesn't cover.
- Base housing zones to Hillsborough County Public Schools; families in Pinellas or Pasco use those districts. Hillsborough offers magnet and IB programs and Plant, Robinson, and Tampa Bay Tech are the South Tampa high schools; off-base families cannot enroll at Tinker without district permission.
- School Liaison Program Manager: 813-828-0146 for enrollment, transfers, and special-education handoffs.
- The base CDCs fill fast; register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders and ask the Airman and Family Readiness Center about Family Child Care homes in Harbor Bay.
Healthcare
- The 6th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital: 3250 Zemke Ave, appointment line 813-828-2273, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., with a satellite Sabal Park Community Clinic across town. No emergency room and no inpatient beds; the clinic closes Wednesday mornings for training.
- Emergencies go to Tampa General Hospital on Davis Islands, the region's only Level I trauma center, about 15 minutes up Bayshore Boulevard. Memorial Hospital of Tampa on Swann Avenue and St. Joseph's on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd are closer options for urgent but non-trauma care. Call the Nurse Advice Line first for TRICARE Prime coverage of urgent care.
- TRICARE East, administered by Humana Military.

Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01Hurricane season is June 1 through November 30 and MacDill takes it seriously: Helene flooded the road to CENTCOM in September 2024 and Milton pushed the KC-135s to McConnell days later. Know your evacuation zone, keep a go-bag in the car, and follow MacDill's official social media for base status.
- 02Book the MacDill Inn the day your orders drop. FSS asks for 60 days' notice May through September, and TDY travelers must reserve through DTS; if it's full, get the non-availability number in writing before booking commercially.
- 03February and March are peak season in Tampa and the per diem lodging rate jumps to $200. Hotel prices jump more, so lock in lodging early for spring-break-season TDYs.
- 04Dale Mabry is the only 24/7 gate. Bayshore closes in the evening and MacDill Gate is inbound-only in the morning and outbound-only in the afternoon, so an early flight or late landing means Dale Mabry, period. Confirm hours on the gate fact sheet; they change with security posture.
- 05Summer afternoons bring lightning storms almost daily between 2 and 5 p.m. Run Bayshore or the base jogging path at dawn, and never leave laundry or a kayak out in the afternoon.
- 06Florida is a no-front-plate, PIP-insurance state, and residents must register vehicles within 90 days with fees based on your birth month. Budget for higher auto premiums than most PCS moves.
- 07The 6th Medical Group has no ER. Tampa General on Davis Islands is the trauma center; put it in your phone before you need it, and use the Nurse Advice Line for TRICARE Prime urgent-care referrals.
- 08Pack a rain shell, sunscreen, and shoes you can wade in. Between afternoon storms, king tides, and the base beach, you will get wet.
