Overview
Naval Air Station Whiting Field is where naval aviation starts. Commissioned in July 1943 and named for Captain Kenneth Whiting, the base north of Milton hosts Training Air Wing FIVE, which flies three primary fixed-wing squadrons (VT-2, VT-3, VT-6) in the T-6B Texan II from North Field and three helicopter squadrons (HT-8, HT-18, HT-28) in the TH-73A Thrasher from South Field. The wing produces more than 1,200 pilots a year and trains every Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard helicopter pilot, using 8 fixed-wing and 5 helicopter outlying fields spread across the Panhandle and south Alabama. About 1,800 active-duty personnel, 130 reservists, 330 civilians, and more than 1,000 contractors work here, and the student population turns over continuously as classes wing and new ones report.
Milton is a small county seat on the Blackwater River in Santa Rosa County, roughly 26 miles northeast of Pensacola's airport and 30 minutes inland from the Gulf. Summers are long, hot, and humid, with July and August highs near 91 and lows in the upper 70s, and the area averages about 70 inches of rain a year, most of it in summer thunderstorms; winters are mild with January highs in the low 60s and lows near 40. For a TDY traveler that means a crashpad with good air conditioning, a covered parking spot for pop-up storms, and a short run up FL-87 matter more than beach proximity, unless you want the beach, in which case Navarre and Gulf Breeze are 35 to 45 minutes south.
Weather
Milton runs hot and wet. July and August highs average about 91 with lows near 77 and heat indices well above 100; January highs are around 63 with lows near 40. Annual rainfall is roughly 70 inches, heaviest in summer, and the Gulf hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30 with the peak in August and September.
Best months
October through November and March through April
Tough months
June through September for heat, humidity, daily thunderstorms, and hurricane watch; a few hard freezes are possible in January
Getting there
- Fly into Pensacola International (PNS), about 26 miles and 40 to 45 minutes from the base: take I-10 east to exit 31 for FL-87, then north through Milton to the West Gate. The base notes taxis from the airport run roughly $45 to $60, so a rental car is the practical answer; you will need one here.
- West Gate (Main Gate) is on the west side of the base off FL-87 north of Milton and is open 24/7; it is the gate to use on arrival and the one the NGIS front desk will direct you to.
- East Gate is a commuter-only gate open Monday through Friday from 0500 to 0800 and 1500 to 1700; it is closed nights, midday, and weekends.
- Visitor passes and DBIDS enrollment go through Pass and ID (850-623-7159). Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, and have your sponsor's contact ready; confirm current Visitor Control Center hours before you drive up.
- Traffic is light by Florida standards, but FL-87 backs up at the gate around 0700 and 1600 when squadrons change over, and US-90 through Milton and Pace crawls at school release and on Friday afternoons in beach season.
- Watch for wildlife and low-flying T-6Bs and TH-73As on FL-87 and the county roads near the outlying fields; the helicopter fields at Pace, Santa Rosa, and Spencer sit right beside residential areas.

- There is no Navy Lodge at or near Whiting Field, so families arriving on PCS orders should book NGIS early or plan on a Milton or Pace hotel.
- No pets are allowed.
- The base's own relocation guidance says to arrange off-station lodging as far in advance as possible because summer lodging is often difficult to find; if NGIS is full for your dates, get the certificate of non-availability before you book off base.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Whiting Field's typical visitor is a student on a six-month-plus order, which is exactly the stay length where a furnished crashpad with a kitchen, laundry, and a fixed nightly rate at or under $124 beats a hotel room by a wide margin, especially when NGIS is full and the beach-town hotels spike in June and July. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at NAS Whiting Field yet, but we are expanding here; if you are a student or instructor looking for a room, or an owner in Milton, Pace, Navarre, or Gulf Breeze with a place to list, reach out and we will connect you.
NAS Whiting Field crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is the privatized Whiting Pines community, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities as Whiting Field Homes (850-626-6202), with two- to four-bedroom homes in the Capehart and Fund neighborhoods.
- Expect a wait list, longest for larger homes and during summer PCS season, so apply as soon as you have orders.
- Off base, Pace has the most new-construction rentals and subdivisions, Milton has older and cheaper inventory close to the gate, and Navarre and Gulf Breeze trade a longer commute for the beach.
- Rents in Santa Rosa County have climbed with the Panhandle's growth, but a three-bedroom in Pace or Milton generally lands at or under BAH for an O-3 with dependents; the Navy Housing Service Center at NAS Whiting Field can help with referrals and lease review.
BAH 2026 · MHA FL064
- NAS Whiting Field is in the Pensacola military housing area, MHA FL064, and shares rates with NAS Pensacola.
- For 2026 the with-dependents rate is $1,863 for an E-5 and $2,271 for an O-3; without dependents it's $1,644 for an E-5 and $2,097 for an O-3, up about half a percent from 2025.
- Confirm your own rate on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.

County seat on the Blackwater River with a historic downtown, older bungalows and ranch homes, the cheapest rents, and the shortest drive to the gate; quiet and small-town
Pace
Fast-growing suburb along US-90 with new subdivisions, chain shopping, and A-rated Pace High; the default choice for families and where most instructors buy
Navarre
Gulf-side town with sugar-sand beaches, Navarre High (A-rated), and a large military population from Whiting, Hurlburt, and Eglin; longest daily drive
Gulf Breeze
Peninsula between Pensacola Bay and Santa Rosa Sound with the district's top-rated schools, Gulf Breeze Hospital, and a Pensacola-adjacent lifestyle; higher rents and a long commute
Schools & childcare
- Santa Rosa County District Schools (santarosaschools.org) serves Milton, Pace, Navarre, and Gulf Breeze; the district has earned an A grade from the Florida Department of Education every year since 2010, with 15 A-rated campuses in 2024–25 including Pace High, Navarre High, Gulf Breeze High, and Gulf Breeze Elementary, Middle, and High.
- There is no on-base school; on-base and Milton addresses generally zone to Milton-area elementary schools and Milton High, while Pace addresses feed Pace High and the Sims Middle cluster. Check the district's zoning map before you sign a lease.
- The NAS Whiting Field Child Development Center and the Family Child Care program (in-home providers) are run through Fleet and Family Readiness; use militarychildcare.com to get on the wait list early, especially for infant care.
- The Whiting Field School Liaison Officer, reached through Fleet and Family Support, helps with enrollment, transfers, and the Interstate Compact; Florida also offers school-choice options and the Santa Rosa Online virtual program.

Blackwater River State Park
Fifteen minutes from the gate, one of the purest sand-bottom rivers in the world winds past white sandbars perfect for a float, a swim, or a picnic. Rent a tube or canoe from an outfitter on Deaton Bridge Road or bring your own; the park has camping, hiking, and a boardwalk through old-growth Atlantic white cedar.

Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Call NGIS the day you get orders; student classes fill the suites for months at a time and the base itself warns that summer lodging is hard to find.
- 02If your orders say Gulf Breeze or Santa Rosa County, your lodging rate jumps to $161 in spring and $214 in June and July; budget a crashpad against the lower fall and winter rate so a class slip doesn't break your reimbursement.
- 03Use the West Gate off FL-87 for anything after 0800 or on weekends; the East Gate only opens for the morning and afternoon commute.
- 04The Blackwater Heritage State Trail connects downtown Milton to the base, so a bike is a real commute option for students living in Milton on cool-season mornings.
- 05Buy a good rain jacket and park under cover if you can; summer afternoons bring near-daily thunderstorms and hail is not rare.
- 06Hurricane season matters here. Know your squadron's evacuation plan, keep your tank above half in August and September, and don't sign a lease on Navarre Beach without checking flood-zone insurance.
- 07Pace and Milton rents move fast in June and July when the wing turns over; look in early spring or late fall and you'll have choices.
- 08Whiting is in Central Time, but Fort Walton Beach, Eglin, and Hurlburt are also Central; only Panama City and points east flip to Eastern, which matters for cross-country planning and family visits.
