Overview
Joint Base Langley-Eustis is where Air Combat Command lives. Langley AFB in Hampton hosts Headquarters ACC, the 1st Fighter Wing and its three F-22 Raptor squadrons (the 27th, 71st, and 94th), the 363rd and 480th ISR Wings, and the Virginia Air National Guard's 192nd Wing, all supported by the 633rd Air Base Wing. Seventeen miles up I-64, Fort Eustis in Newport News is the Army's transportation and aviation-logistics schoolhouse — home of the 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), the 128th Aviation Brigade, and the Futures and Concepts Command. Together they serve about 15,000 active duty, 27,000 family members, and 12,000 students a year.
The whole thing sits on the Virginia Peninsula, a flat, tidal wedge of land between the James and York Rivers with the Chesapeake Bay at the end of the runway. Summers are hot and sticky, winters are mild, and the roads funnel into a handful of bridges and tunnels that define your commute more than distance does. For a TDY traveler that means three things: rent a car, respect the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, and book lodging early — this is the busiest fighter base on the East Coast and it shares a housing market with the largest naval base in the world.
Weather
July highs average around 88°F with dew points that make it feel hotter, and January lows sit near 33°F with only about 4 inches of snow a year. The Peninsula gets roughly 47 to 50 inches of rain annually, with summer thunderstorms and nor'easters that flood low-lying roads.
Best months
April through early June and September through October — warm, lower humidity, and the beaches are open without the crowds
Tough months
July and August for heat and humidity, and June through November for hurricane and tropical-storm season; tidal flooding closes streets in Hampton and Poquoson during big storms
Getting there
- Newport News/Williamsburg International (PHF) is the local airport, about 15 to 20 minutes from the LaSalle Gate via I-64 and 15 minutes from Fort Eustis — but flights are limited. Most travelers fly into Norfolk International (ORF), about 35 to 45 minutes away through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, or Richmond (RIC), roughly 75 minutes up I-64. Rent a car at whichever airport you use; nothing on the Peninsula is walkable.
- Langley: the LaSalle Gate (main, with the Visitor Control Center) and King Street Gate are posted as Monday-Friday 0600-2200, closed weekends and holidays; the Armistead (West) Gate is the 24/7 gate; the Durand (NASA) Gate opens only for weekday rush hours. Fort Eustis: Main Gate 1 off Washington Boulevard is 24/7 and Gate 2 is weekdays 0600-1800. Confirm current hours on jble.af.mil before you travel — they change for exercises and holidays.
- Langley's Visitor Control Center is at the LaSalle Gate, 11 Nealy Avenue, Hampton, and the Fort Eustis VCC is in Building 2 just outside Gate 1, posted Monday-Friday 0730-1700. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, and if you don't have a CAC, have your sponsor's info ready. Phone numbers for the Langley VCC differ between sources, so call the base operator at 757-764-1110 to be routed.
- Traffic is about tunnels and bridges, not miles. I-64 through Hampton and Newport News backs up at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and the I-64/I-664 interchange every weekday, and summer weekend beach traffic and Fort Monroe or Hampton Coliseum events can add 30 minutes. For Langley, use I-64 exit 265 (Armistead/LaSalle); for Fort Eustis, use exit 250A (Washington Boulevard).

The crashpad option
We're expanding at JB Langley-Eustis. If you have orders to Langley or Fort Eustis, send us your dates — we'll match you with a furnished room priced inside the $110 rate, with DTS-ready receipts, and let you know the moment a Hampton or Yorktown crashpad opens up.
JB Langley-Eustis crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Langley's family housing is privatized under Hunt Military Communities as Langley Family Housing — about 1,430 homes across neighborhoods on base and at Bethel Manor off base, leasing office 757-865-1330.
- Fort Eustis Family Homes are run by Balfour Beatty Communities — more than 950 homes in nine neighborhoods — with the leasing office at 757-369-8335.
- Off base, Peninsula rents in 2026 generally sit at or under BAH for a three-bedroom in Hampton and Newport News and run higher in Poquoson and York County, where schools drive demand; check the Military Housing Office before signing anything, and if you're buying, expect competition — Hampton Roads is a strong VA-loan market and homes near good schools move fast.
BAH 2026
- The MHA is VA297 (Hampton/Newport News).
- Per published 2026 tables, E-5 is approximately $2,274 with dependents and $1,779 without; O-3 is approximately $2,475 with dependents and $2,361 without — up about 6.4 percent from 2025.
- Note that Norfolk/Portsmouth across the water (VA298) pays more, so your BAH depends on your duty ZIP, not where you live.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Fox Hill, Buckroe, and Phoebus (Hampton)
Old-school waterfront Hampton right outside the gate — modest 1950s-70s ranches, Buckroe Beach on the Chesapeake Bay, Phoebus's walkable main street, and Hampton City Schools, which are 100 percent Purple Star; cheapest commute on the Peninsula and prices to match.
Poquoson
A small independent city of marsh, docks, and boat trailers with some of the highest-rated schools in the region and a tight housing supply that keeps prices up; flood zones are real, so read the insurance fine print.
Yorktown and Tabb (York County)
The default pick for Langley families — newer subdivisions off Route 17 and Victory Boulevard, York County's Purple Star schools, and a straight shot down Route 134 or 171 to the gate; three-bedrooms here often sit at or above BAH.
Kiln Creek, Oyster Point, and City Center (Newport News)
The middle ground between the two installations — a big planned community with a golf course, plenty of apartments and townhomes for singles and geo-bachelors, and restaurants around City Center; equidistant to Langley and Fort Eustis.
Williamsburg and upper York County
Closest to Fort Eustis and popular with Army families and TRADOC-era staff — colonial-style neighborhoods, Williamsburg-James City County schools, and easy access to Busch Gardens, but a real I-64 slog to Langley.
Schools & childcare
- No DoDEA schools on base. Langley housing zones into Hampton City Schools, and the Bethel Manor community is served by Bethel Manor Elementary, named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School; Fort Eustis housing zones into Newport News Public Schools.
- Hampton City Schools achieved 100 percent Purple Star designation across its schools, and York County School Division is also a Purple Star participant; both have dedicated military family liaisons. Poquoson City Schools and York County are the districts families most often chase for ratings.
- The JBLE School Liaison Program can be reached at 757-778-5019 (Langley office 757-764-2628) — call them before you pick a neighborhood; they know which schools have space and how to handle a mid-year transfer.
- Child care: the JBLE-Langley Child Development Center is at 757-764-3585, and Fort Eustis runs its own CDC and youth programs. Get on the list at MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders — Peninsula waitlists run months — and note that Air Force and Space Force families get 20 free hours of childcare per child during a PCS.
Healthcare
- USAF Hospital Langley (633rd Medical Group) is a full hospital with a 24/7 Emergency Department; main line 757-225-7630, hours Monday-Friday 0730-1630, and appointments through the Hampton Roads Appointment Center at 866-645-4584. Note the ED closes for training the third Thursday of each month.
- McDonald Army Health Center at Fort Eustis is clinic-level — no inpatient beds and no emergency room — but it runs an Urgent Care Center 365 days a year from 0700 to 2200. For true emergencies on the Eustis side call 911; Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News is the nearest civilian trauma center.
- JBLE is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. Enroll or transfer your Prime enrollment before you arrive, and TDY travelers should keep their home enrollment and use the Langley ED or urgent care as needed.
On base
- Commissary
Two of them — Langley at 51 Spaatz Drive (roughly 0900-1900 weekdays, Saturday from 0800, Sunday 0900-1800) and a second at Fort Eustis; both support Click2Go online ordering.
- Exchange
- Langley BX Mall at 61 Spaatz Drive, Building 90, with a food court, barber, and outdoor rec; Fort Eustis has its own PX.
- Hours run roughly 0900-2000 Monday-Saturday and 1000-1800 Sunday.
- Fitness
Shellbank Fitness Center (indoor pool, indoor track, courts, full weight floor) and the ACC Campus Fitness Center at Langley, plus Anderson Field House and other MWR gyms at Fort Eustis — all free to active duty, Guard, Reserve, and retirees.
- Dining
- Langley runs an Air Force dining facility near the dorms and a full BX food court; Fort Eustis has Army DFACs serving the training population.
- Off base, Mercury Boulevard and Coliseum Central are five minutes from the gate with every chain you'd expect.
- MWR
Langley's marina on the Back River rents boats and kayaks, there's an on-base golf course, bowling, and outdoor recreation with beach and camping gear; Fort Eustis MWR runs its own marina on the James, golf, and a big travel-ticket office for Busch Gardens and Williamsburg attractions.
- History
Langley Field opened in 1917 and is the oldest continuously active Air Force base; NASA's Langley Research Center shares the fence line, and the Virginia Air & Space Science Center in downtown Hampton is the base's official visitor center.
Off duty

Fort Monroe and Buckroe Beach
Fifteen minutes from the gate, Fort Monroe is a decommissioned stone fort turned national monument with a free Casemate Museum, a lighthouse, and a beach on the Bay. Buckroe Beach next door has a fishing pier, a boardwalk, and summer concerts; both are where Langley people go after work.

Downtown Hampton and Phoebus
The Virginia Air & Space Science Center (with an IMAX and an F-4 hanging from the ceiling) anchors the downtown waterfront, with the Hampton Carousel and harbor cruises around it. Phoebus, a mile east, has the Peninsula's best cluster of breweries and dive bars along Mellen Street.

Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens
About 30 miles up I-64 (closer from Fort Eustis), Colonial Williamsburg is the restored 18th-century capital and Busch Gardens Williamsburg is one of the country's best-rated theme parks. The Eustis MWR ticket office sells discounted admission, and Water Country USA is next door for July.

Yorktown Battlefield and Riverwalk
Twenty minutes north, the Yorktown Riverwalk has waterfront restaurants, a small beach on the York River, and the Yorktown Battlefield where the Revolution ended. The Colonial Parkway between Yorktown and Williamsburg is one of the prettiest drives in the state.

Virginia Beach oceanfront
Roughly 35 miles and 45 minutes through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (longer on summer weekends), the three-mile boardwalk, the Neptune statue, and the Oceanfront strip are the standard Saturday plan. Sandbridge and First Landing State Park are the quieter alternatives.
Wikipedia ↗Norfolk and Naval Station Norfolk
Across the water, Nauticus and the battleship Wisconsin sit on the Norfolk waterfront, with the Chrysler Museum and the Ghent neighborhood nearby. Naval Station Norfolk — the largest naval base in the world — runs bus tours from its tour office if you want to see a carrier pier row.
Official site ↗On the water
The Peninsula is surrounded by water, and the base marinas rent kayaks, paddleboards, and boats for the Back River and the James. Grandview Nature Preserve in Fox Hill is a two-mile beach walk with no crowds, and fishing off the Buckroe or James River piers is the local pastime.
Insider tips
- 01The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel is the single biggest variable in your day. If you fly into Norfolk, avoid crossing westbound between 1500 and 1900 on weekdays and eastbound Sunday afternoons in summer; check the 511 Virginia app before you commit.
- 02Hurricane season runs June through November and the base sits at sea level on the Back River. Isabel flooded Langley in 2003; keep a go-bag, know the evacuation zones, and watch JBLE's social media when a storm is named.
- 03Both Air Force Inns take reservations 60 days out for PCS and TDY — book the day your orders drop. ACC conferences, F-22 exercises, and Army class starts at Eustis fill both inns at once, and you need that non-availability number in hand for a commercial stay.
- 04Langley's LaSalle and King Street gates close at 2200 on weekdays and all weekend. If you're landing late, plan on the 24/7 Armistead Gate and confirm the current hours on jble.af.mil first — they change for exercises and holidays.
- 05Summer humidity here is no joke and the F-22 flightline radiates heat. Pack moisture-wicking PT gear, a rain shell for afternoon storms, and something warm for the damp 40-degree days that show up from December through February.
- 06TDY to Fort Eustis? Don't book a crashpad or hotel in Hampton without checking your drive — it's 17 miles and 25 to 40 minutes on I-64 each way. Newport News, Yorktown, or Williamsburg are better bets for the Army side.
- 07Family housing waitlists at Langley and Eustis vary by bedroom count and rank; call Hunt (757-865-1330) or Balfour Beatty (757-369-8335) before you arrive and get your name on the list from your losing station.
- 08Poquoson and lower York County have great schools and real flood zones. If you're buying, get a flood-zone determination and an insurance quote before you fall in love with a waterfront lot.
