Overview

Marine Corps Base Quantico is the Crossroads of the Marine Corps, and the nickname is literal: every Marine officer passes through here at least twice. Officer Candidates School at Brown Field screens and commissions candidates on ten-week cycles, The Basic School at Camp Barrett then trains more than 2,000 new lieutenants a year over 26 weeks, and Marine Corps University runs Expeditionary Warfare School, Command and Staff College, and the School of Advanced Warfighting for the captains and majors who come back later. Wrapped around the schoolhouses are Training and Education Command, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Marine Corps Systems Command, the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity, and HMX-1, the squadron that flies the President. The FBI Academy, DEA Training Academy, and NCIS headquarters are tenants too. The count as of early 2024 was roughly 6,200 military, 11,000 civilians, 5,600 contractors, and 5,600 students on any given day, on a 55,000-acre reservation that spans three counties.

The place is the southern edge of the Washington commuter belt: Prince William County along I-95, 36 miles south of the District, with the Potomac River on the base's eastern edge and the town of Quantico sitting as an enclave inside the fence. Summers are warm and muggy with afternoon thunderstorms, winters are cold enough for a real coat and about 13 inches of snow a year, and spring and fall are excellent. What matters to a traveler on orders is I-95 traffic, which turns a 30-minute drive into an hour on Friday afternoons, and the fact that the lodging market is priced for federal commuters while the per diem is the standard CONUS rate. Plan your commute around the express lanes and the VRE, and lock down lodging before your class start date.

Weather

Temperatures typically run from about 28°F on winter nights to the upper 80s on July afternoons, with high humidity from June through September. The area gets roughly 47 inches of rain spread fairly evenly across the year and about 13 inches of snow, most of it in January and February.

Best months

April through early June and September through October — mild, green, and the best months for the battlefields and the Potomac.

Tough months

July and August for heat and humidity with daily thunderstorm risk on the ranges, and January through February when snow and ice can shut down I-95 and delay the gates.

Getting there

  • Fly into Reagan National (DCA), about 36 miles north; it is the closest and the easiest, and the drive is 45 minutes with no traffic and well over an hour in the afternoon rush. Dulles (IAD) and Richmond (RIC) are both roughly 75 to 80 minutes. Rent a car — the base is spread across 55,000 acres and the schoolhouses, the museum, and the lodging neighborhoods are all miles apart.
  • From I-95 take exit 148 (Quantico / Fuller Road) for Gate 1, the main gate, which is open 24 hours and is where all visitors and non-DoD credential holders process in. Militaryonesource lists exits 150A northbound and 148 southbound for the installation.
  • Other gates keep posted hours: Gate 5 at the Ponderosa Y next to the commercial vehicle inspection lot is 24 hours; Gate 4 by the commissary and Gate 6 on Onville Road near TBS are daytime gates that open around 0500 and close in the evening, and the MCU / Q-Town gate is weekday business hours only. Hours have shifted more than once since 2021, so confirm on the MCB Quantico base access page before an early or late arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at Gate 1 and is open Monday through Friday 0600 to 1500 and Saturday 0730 to 1130, closed Sundays and federal holidays; call 703-784-3023. Everyone without a DoD ID needs a REAL ID-compliant license or passport and a DBIDS enrollment; drivers also need registration and proof of insurance. Do not arrive on a Sunday expecting a family member to get a pass.
  • Traffic reality: I-95 between Fredericksburg and the Beltway is one of the worst corridors on the East Coast. The 95 Express Lanes reverse direction (northbound mornings, southbound afternoons) and now extend south past Quantico toward Fredericksburg, and they are worth the toll on a class-start Monday. Route 1 is the surface alternative and moves fine outside rush hour.
  • The Virginia Railway Express Fredericksburg Line has a Quantico station inside the fence in Q-Town, and Amtrak Northeast Regional trains also stop there; it is a legitimate option for a weekend in D.C. without touching I-95.

TDY lodging

On base

On-base lodging is The Crossroads Inn, part of Inns of the Corps, at 3018 Russell Road next to The Clubs at Quantico

  • On-base lodging is The Crossroads Inn, part of Inns of the Corps, at 3018 Russell Road next to The Clubs at Quantico; call 703-630-4444, toll-free 800-965-9511, or the 24/7 Inns of the Corps reservation center at 888-409-7829.
  • The inn has 74 standard rooms, 4 king rooms, 42 efficiencies, and 24 suites, plus a limited number of pet-friendly rooms.
  • PCS families can reserve up to a year in advance, TAD/TDY travelers 90 days out, and leisure stays 30 days out; eligibility covers active duty, Guard and Reserve, retirees, DoD civilians, FBI and DEA personnel, and OCS students with orders and a photo ID.
  • There are no geographic-bachelor quarters on base, and TBS and OCS students are billeted by the schoolhouse rather than the inn.
  • If the inn cannot house you for your dates, ask for a certificate of non-availability and confirm your command's off-base lodging guidance before you book.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

A 26-week TBS course, a ten-month MCU academic year, or a rolling MCSC program assignment is exactly the stay that a furnished crashpad with a kitchen, parking, and a fixed nightly rate at or under $110 was built for, and it gets you out of a hotel room on Route 1 that turns over every weekend. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Quantico yet; we are expanding into Stafford, Dumfries, Woodbridge, and Fredericksburg now, so send an inquiry with your dates and we will match you with a host or tell you honestly when we cannot.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Privatized family housing on MCB Quantico is run by Liberty Military Housing (703-432-8500), with neighborhoods spread across the mainside area; the Family Housing office is 703-784-2711.
  • Wait lists move with the TBS and MCU calendars, so apply as soon as you have orders and expect to bridge in the Crossroads Inn or a rental if your report date lands in the summer PCS surge.
  • The off-base market is the Washington exurbs: single-family subdivisions in Stafford and Prince William counties, townhomes and apartments along Route 1 in Dumfries and Woodbridge, and more house per dollar in Fredericksburg at the cost of a longer I-95 commute.
  • Rents track federal-commuter demand, so a three-bedroom near the base will generally take most of a with-dependents BAH.

BAH 2026 · MHA VA296

GradeWith dependentsWithout dependents
E-5$2,955$2,361
O-3$3,327$3,090
  • The 2026 BAH for MCB Quantico (MHA VA296) is $2,955 with dependents and $2,361 without for an E-5, and $3,327 with and $3,090 without for an O-3, per the base housing site, which notes rates dipped 0.2 percent from 2025.
  • Confirm your own rate on the DTMO BAH calculator, since the MHA boundary and your dependency status drive the number.
NeighborhoodCommute

North Stafford / Aquia Harbour

Suburban subdivisions, a gated riverfront community with a marina and golf course, Stafford County schools, and a big share of Quantico and Belvoir families.

Commute: About 15 minutes north on I-95 or Route 1 to the Fuller Road gate; the Garrisonville Road exit is the pinch point at rush hour.

Dumfries / Triangle / Montclair

Right outside the main gate; townhomes and apartments along Route 1, the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and the lake community of Montclair a few minutes west.

Commute: 5 to 15 minutes to Gate 1 via Route 1 or Fuller Road; walkable to almost nothing but the shortest drive on this list.

Woodbridge / Lake Ridge

Larger apartment and townhome inventory, Potomac Mills shopping, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, and a straight shot to Belvoir and the Pentagon for dual-military couples.

Commute: 20 to 25 minutes south on I-95 to exit 148, longer if you leave after 1500.

Fredericksburg / Spotsylvania

Historic downtown, Civil War battlefields, newer subdivisions, and noticeably lower rents; the VRE and Amtrak stop downtown.

Commute: About 30 minutes north on I-95 or Route 1 on a good day, 45 or more on a Friday.

Schools & childcare

  • Two DoDEA schools sit on base for families in military housing: Crossroads Elementary (PreK-5, about 600 students, opened 2015) and Quantico Middle High School (grades 6-12), both in the DoDEA Americas Mid-Atlantic District.
  • Off base, Prince William County Public Schools covers Dumfries, Triangle, Montclair, and Woodbridge, and Stafford County Public Schools covers North Stafford and Aquia Harbour; Fredericksburg City and Spotsylvania County run their own districts.
  • MCCS Quantico runs Child Development Centers and a School Age Care program on base; register through MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders because the waitlist follows the summer PCS cycle.
  • The School Liaison at MCCS Quantico is the right first call for enrollment paperwork, DoDEA eligibility questions, and Interstate Compact issues when you move mid-year.
  • Marine Corps University's Gray Research Center library is open to students and staff and is a real study space for anyone on a resident course.
06

Healthcare

  • Naval Health Clinic Quantico at 3259 Catlin Avenue (703-784-1725) provides primary care, dental, optometry, pharmacy, lab, radiology, physical therapy, and behavioral health, Monday through Friday 0730 to 1600; it has no emergency room.
  • Quantico is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military; enroll or transfer your Prime enrollment through the Humana Military portal on arrival.
  • For emergencies the nearest civilian hospitals are Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge and Stafford Hospital (Mary Washington Healthcare) off Route 1 in North Stafford; Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg is the area's larger trauma center.
  • The clinic pharmacy fills on-base prescriptions and uses the Q-Anywhere text-in system so you do not have to wait in the lobby; confirm current hours on quantico.tricare.mil.
  • Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital are the closest military hospitals for specialty referrals, both roughly an hour north depending on traffic.

Insider tips

  1. 01Exit 148 is the main gate; if you overshoot to exit 150 you will circle through Dumfries on Route 1 to get back. Program 'Fuller Road Gate' rather than 'Quantico' in the map app, since 'Quantico' drops you in the town enclave behind the MCU gate.
  2. 02Treat the 95 Express Lanes as part of your per diem math: an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV lets you ride them free with three people, and a TBS carpool from Stafford makes the toll disappear.
  3. 03The VRE Quantico station is inside the fence in Q-Town. Weekend Amtrak trains from the same platform will put you in Union Station in about an hour, which beats parking in the District.
  4. 04The Visitor Control Center is closed Sundays and holidays. If family is visiting for a TBS graduation, get them enrolled in DBIDS on a weekday or Saturday morning beforehand.
  5. 05TBS and OCS students are billeted by the schoolhouse, not the Crossroads Inn; staff, MCU students, and MCSC travelers should call the inn 90 days out and ask about efficiencies, which have a kitchenette.
  6. 06Naval Health Clinic Quantico has no ER; Stafford Hospital off Route 1 and Sentara in Woodbridge are the two closest, and both are on the way home if you live north or south.
  7. 07The Marine Corps museum is free and never crowded on weekday afternoons, and the Tun Tavern inside serves a real lunch; it is the best place to send visiting parents while you are on the range.
  8. 08Summer thunderstorms roll in most afternoons in July and August; if you run on the Prince William Forest Park trails, go early and carry water, and expect the ranges to go cold when lightning is within ten miles.
