Overview

Patrick is the Space Force's launch base. Space Launch Delta 45 operates the Eastern Range from here and from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station 12 miles north, clearing Department of Defense, NASA, NOAA, and commercial rockets — 93 launches in 2024 and a record 109 in 2025, more than any spaceport in the world. The base also hosts the Air Force Reserve's 920th Rescue Wing with its HH-60W Jolly Green IIs and HC-130J Combat King IIs, the Air Force Technical Applications Center that watches the planet for nuclear tests, and the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, which pulls students from every service. Roughly 13,600 people work here, with 3,700 of them in uniform, and the TDY population turns over constantly with each launch campaign and course start.

The place itself is a two-mile-wide barrier island with the Banana River on one side and the Atlantic on the other, wedged between Cocoa Beach to the north and Satellite Beach to the south. It is genuinely a beach town: surf, sea breeze, afternoon thunderstorms, and a July-August that runs 88 degrees with tropical humidity. For a TDY traveler that means a rental car (there is no useful transit), a plan for A1A traffic on launch days, and the understanding that hotel rates swing hard with cruise ships, spring break, and launch tourism — which is exactly why a crashpad at the government rate is the calm choice.

Weather

Cocoa Beach averages a 70/56 F high/low in January and 88/76 in July and August, with a hot season that runs from late May into early October. The area gets about 43 inches of rain a year, most of it in June-September afternoon storms, and August alone averages nearly 6 inches; ocean water runs 70 F in February to 83 F in August.

Best months

November through April — dry, 70s, and the beach is empty on weekdays

Tough months

June through November: hurricane season, daily 3 p.m. thunderstorms, and heat indices over 100 in July-August; also spring break (March) and cruise-ship weekends for hotel prices

02

Getting there

  • Fly into MLB (Melbourne Orlando International), about 13 miles and 20 minutes south of the base: NASA Blvd to US 1, north to the Pineda Causeway (SR 404), across the river to A1A, then north to the gate. MCO in Orlando has far more flights but is roughly 57 miles and an hour-plus west via the SR 528 Beachline toll road (it runs straight into A1A at Cocoa Beach). Either way, rent a car — nothing on this island is walkable from the gate and there is no shuttle you would want to rely on.
  • Two gates. The South Gate on South Patrick Drive is open 24/7 and is the one you want coming from Satellite Beach, Indian Harbour Beach, or the Pineda Causeway. The Main (East) Gate on A1A at the north end of base is open 0600-2200 daily and is the natural entry from Cocoa Beach and the Beachline. Gate hours change with force-protection conditions and holidays, so confirm on the SLD 45 Visitor Control Center page or 45 FSS social media before an early arrival.
  • The Visitor Control Center sits just outside the East Gate on A1A and is open Monday-Friday 0600-1800 and Saturday 0800-1200 (321-494-0427). Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport; visitors without DoD ID need a sponsor present or an advance request, and DBIDS enrollment is done here. If you are arriving after hours on a Sunday with no CAC, plan to sort it out Monday morning.
  • Traffic is about the causeways and launches. A1A and South Patrick Drive move fine most of the time, but on a launch morning the beachside fills with spectators and A1A can crawl for an hour either side of liftoff; the Pineda and Eau Gallie causeways back up at 0700-0800 and 1600-1730 with commuters from Viera and Melbourne. Cruise-ship Saturdays at Port Canaveral add to the A1A load north of Cocoa Beach.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Privatized housing is Patrick Family Housing, run by Hunt Military Communities: 616 homes across three neighborhoods on base — Pelican Coast (3- and 4-bedroom single-family homes a short walk from the beach), River's Edge on the Banana River side, and Oceanside.
  • The Military Housing Office is 321-494-2594; reach Patrick Family Housing through patrick-family-housing.com and get on the list as early as six months out, since most rank/bedroom waits run one to three months.
  • Off base, Brevard County's 2026 median home price is about $375,000 and median rent about $2,100; beachside towns run higher (Cocoa Beach median around $475,000 and $2,700 rent) while Melbourne and Palm Bay are $350,000-$400,000 with rents near $2,000.
  • Buying is common here — the market is stable rather than surging and VA loans are everywhere.

BAH 2026 · MHA FL059

  • Patrick SFB is in MHA FL059 (published as Patrick SFB / Melbourne-Titusville), which covers Brevard County from Titusville to Palm Bay.
  • Two published 2026 tables agree: E-5 approximately $2,502 with dependents and $2,037 without; O-3 approximately $2,922 with dependents and $2,742 without.
  • Rates rose about 7 percent over 2025.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator for your exact grade and status.
NeighborhoodCommute

Satellite Beach

The default Patrick town — quiet beachside streets, A-rated Surfside and Sea Park elementaries, Satellite High, a huge military presence, and 1960s-90s homes that now list well above the county median.

Commute: ~5-10 min

Indian Harbour Beach / Indialantic

Slightly bigger lots and canal homes on the river side, Hoover Middle and Gemini Elementary, a short hop to the Eau Gallie Causeway restaurants; pricey but you can walk to the beach.

Commute: ~10 min

Cocoa Beach

North of the base, more vacation-rental energy with the Pier, Ron Jon's, and the Port's cruise traffic; condos are plentiful and the K-12 Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High is a well-regarded small school, but weekend traffic is real.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Viera / Suntree

Mainland master-planned suburbia with newer homes, top-rated Viera High and Quest Elementary, The Avenue shopping, and the Space Coast Stadium; you trade the beach for square footage and an every-day causeway commute.

Commute: ~25-30 min

Melbourne / West Melbourne

The most house for the money with rents near $2,000, close to MLB airport and the L3Harris/Northrop tech corridor, mixed schools by zone; the Pineda or Eau Gallie causeway is your daily reality.

Commute: ~25-35 min

Schools & childcare

  • No on-base schools. Kids in Pelican Coast, River's Edge, and Oceanside attend Brevard Public Schools on the beachside — typically Sea Park or Surfside Elementary, DeLaura Middle, and Satellite High in Satellite Beach, a few minutes down South Patrick Drive. Verify zoning by address on the BPS attendance-zone locator.
  • Brevard Public Schools is a Purple Star district with 91 recognized schools, and SLD 45 signed a formal partnership with the district in 2025 to support military-connected students. Satellite High, Viera High, and Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High are consistently among the county's strongest; West Shore Jr./Sr. High and Edgewood in Melbourne are choice magnets worth an application, and the Space Coast has a deep bench of charter and STEM options given the aerospace workforce.
  • The SLD 45 School Liaison is at 321-494-1991 (susan.clark.8@spaceforce.mil per the district's Purple Star pages) and can walk you through zoning, transfers, and the Interstate Compact before you arrive; the Military & Family Readiness Center can connect you if that number changes.
  • The Patrick Child Development Center (321-494-7028) is a 256-child facility near the housing area; waitlists are shorter than at big bases but still run months for infants, so request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders. Family Child Care homes on base and a School Age Program through Youth Programs fill the gaps.
06

Healthcare

  • The 45th Medical Group at 1381 South Patrick Drive is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital — no emergency room and no inpatient beds. Primary care, pharmacy, dental, and limited specialty run Monday-Friday 0730-1630; appointment line 321-494-8241, with a 24/7 line at 1-888-PAT-CURE (1-888-728-2873) for after-hours advice.
  • Emergencies go off base: Cape Canaveral Hospital (Health First) in Cocoa Beach is about 10 minutes north on A1A with a full ER, and Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne is the area's Level II trauma center about 25 minutes away across the causeway. Health First and other urgent-care clinics along A1A and in Melbourne take TRICARE for after-hours care — call the Nurse Advice Line (1-800-TRICARE) first for Prime beneficiaries.
  • TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military (1-800-444-5445). TDY travelers on Prime can use urgent care without a referral; enroll or transfer through milConnect or the Humana Military app.

On base

Commissary
  • 1225 South Patrick Drive (321-392-1274); open daily 0800, closing 1800 Sat-Mon and 1900 Tue-Fri.
  • Mid-remodel with completion expected fall 2027, so expect shifting aisles; CLICK2GO curbside runs the same hours.
Exchange

Main store at 1221 South Patrick Drive, Bldg 1364 (321-799-1300), with a food court, a Class Six, and a shoppette/gas station on the South Patrick Drive side — the closest fuel to the South Gate.

Fitness
  • Patrick Fitness & Sports Center, open Monday-Friday 0500-2000 and weekends 0700-1600, with a second small facility at Cape Canaveral SFS.
  • An outdoor track and the beach itself cover the rest — base beach access is right across A1A.
Dining
  • Riverside Dining Facility, 350 Thor Street (321-494-4248): weekday breakfast 0630-0900, lunch 1030-1330, dinner 1630-1900, with grab-and-go in between; confirm weekend hours with 45 FSS.
  • Exchange food court and the Manatee Cove lounge cover off hours.
MWR

Manatee Cove Marina on the Banana River (321-494-2667) rents boats, kayaks, and paddleboards and has wet and dry slips; Outdoor Recreation at 1629 Atlas Avenue (321-494-2054) rents beach and camping gear and runs the FamCamp on the river; there is also an 18-hole golf course (Manatee Cove) and ITT tickets for Kennedy Space Center and the Orlando parks.

History
  • Commissioned as Naval Air Station Banana River in 1940 to hunt U-boats with seaplanes, transferred to the Air Force in 1948, named for Maj.
  • Gen. Mason Patrick in 1950, and renamed Patrick Space Force Base on 9 December 2020 — the first base to take the new service's name.

Watch a launch from the beach

With 100-plus launches a year you will almost certainly catch one on a normal TDY. Jetty Park at Port Canaveral (about 20 miles north, small entry fee) is the classic close-in spot for Cape pads; for zero effort, walk across A1A to the base beach or up to the Cocoa Beach Pier and look north. Check the SLD 45 or Space Coast Launches apps for windows and scrubs.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex

About 35 miles and 45 minutes north via A1A and SR 3 on Merritt Island — Atlantis in its own hall, the Saturn V, the rocket garden, and bus tours to the pads. Buy tickets through ITT on base to save; plan a full day and go on a weekday to dodge cruise-ship crowds.

Cocoa Beach Pier and Ron Jon

Ten minutes up A1A: the 800-foot pier with its bars and fishing, Ron Jon Surf Shop (open 24 hours, a landmark in its own right), and surf lessons on the softest breaks in Florida. Sunrise on the pier before a 0730 report is a legitimate Patrick tradition.

Port Canaveral and The Cove

The second-busiest cruise port in the world is 25 minutes north; The Cove's waterfront restaurants — Fishlips, Grills, Rusty's — do casual seafood with a view of ships and submarines coming in, and Exploration Tower has the best panorama on the coast. Avoid Saturday afternoons unless you enjoy cruise traffic.

Sebastian Inlet and Melbourne Beach

Drive 30-40 minutes south on A1A past Melbourne Beach to Sebastian Inlet State Park: the best surf and inshore fishing on the east coast, snook off the jetty, and the Archie Carr sea turtle refuge along the way (nesting May-October; join a ranger turtle walk in June-July).

Paddle the Banana River

The base sits on the Banana River Lagoon; rent a kayak at Manatee Cove Marina and you will see manatees and dolphins within minutes, and on summer nights guided bioluminescence paddles run out of Merritt Island and Cocoa Beach's Thousand Islands. Bring bug spray and a headlamp.

Eau Gallie and downtown Melbourne

Fifteen to twenty minutes across the causeway: Eau Gallie Arts District for murals, the Foosaner-area galleries, and brewery patios, then historic downtown Melbourne's New Haven Avenue for dinner and live music. Viera's The Avenue and a Space Coast Stadium ballgame (Florida State League) round out the mainland options.

Insider tips

  1. 01Use the South Gate. It is 24/7, it is the one closest to Satellite Beach and the Pineda Causeway, and it dumps you onto South Patrick Drive right by the commissary, exchange, clinic, and fitness center. The East Gate closes at 2200 and sits at the far north end of the runway.
  2. 02Hurricane season is June 1 to November 30, and this island evacuates — Matthew (2016), Irma (2017), and Ian (2022) all triggered beachside orders. Know which causeway you would take west, keep a half tank of gas from August on, and follow 45 FSS and SLD 45 social media for HURCON changes that shift gate hours and lodging.
  3. 03Launch days rearrange traffic. A1A north of Cocoa Beach and the Port area jam for an hour on either side of a high-profile launch, and Jetty Park sells out; for a workday launch, watch from the base beach across A1A and keep your car parked.
  4. 04Book the Space Coast Inn the moment orders drop. It is small, DEOMI class starts and launch campaigns fill it weeks out, and if you wait you will be hunting a beachside hotel at spring-break or cruise-weekend prices. Get the non-availability number in writing.
  5. 05The 3 p.m. thunderstorm is a summer appointment. It hits hard, floods South Patrick Drive for twenty minutes, and produces the most lightning strikes in the country — the base sounds a lightning warning and outdoor PT and flightline work stop. Pack a rain shell, not an umbrella.
  6. 06Sand and salt eat everything. Rinse the rental car, keep your CAC and phone out of the beach bag, and bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and water shoes — the ocean floor here is fine but the summer sand is hot enough to blister.
  7. 07The clinic is walk-in for nothing and closed by 1630; put 1-888-PAT-CURE and Cape Canaveral Hospital in your phone before you need them, and know that Holmes Regional in Melbourne is where anything serious ends up.
  8. 08PCSing? Call the Military Housing Office (321-494-2594) and Patrick Family Housing six months out — the 616-home inventory is small and Pelican Coast's beach-walk homes go fast — and if you buy, get pre-approved early; beachside inventory is thin and stable pricing means there are no bargains, just fair deals.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at Patrick SFB and get reimbursed?
Yes. Call the Space Coast Inn first (321-494-5428 per the Air Force Inns listing; confirm the number on af.dodlodging.net). If they are full you receive a non-availability number, and you can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Cocoa Beach/Brevard County rate of $166 lodging plus $74 M&IE. A Base Crashpads house is priced under the $166 rate with itemized DTS-ready receipts, so it reimburses like a hotel without the resort fees and parking charges.
Which gate is open when I land late?
The South Gate on South Patrick Drive is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for CAC and DBIDS holders. The Main (East) Gate on A1A runs 0600-2200. Visitors without a DoD credential need the Visitor Control Center outside the East Gate, open Monday-Friday 0600-1800 and Saturday 0800-1200, so plan a late Sunday arrival accordingly. Confirm current hours on the SLD 45 Visitor Control Center page — they change with force-protection conditions and holidays.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 45th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic (appointments 321-494-8241, open weekdays 0730-1630) with no ER or inpatient care. Emergencies go to Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, about 10 minutes north, or Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, the region's Level II trauma center. Patrick is in the TRICARE East region under Humana Military.
Where do families live near Patrick SFB?
Most stay beachside: Satellite Beach and Indian Harbour Beach are 5-10 minutes from the South Gate with strong schools (Surfside, Sea Park, DeLaura, Satellite High) but prices well above the county median. Cocoa Beach is the vacation-town option to the north. For newer construction and more house, families cross the causeway to Viera/Suntree or Melbourne and accept a 25-35 minute commute. On base, Hunt's Patrick Family Housing has 616 homes in Pelican Coast, River's Edge, and Oceanside, with typical waits of one to three months.
