Overview
Pope Field is the Air Force's piece of Fort Bragg. The 43rd Air Mobility Operations Group, under Air Mobility Command's Expeditionary Center, runs the aerial port, maintenance, command and control and medical support that lets the 82nd Airborne Division and Joint Special Operations Command launch on short notice; its eight squadrons include the 43rd Air Mobility Squadron and the 43rd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron. Alongside it sit the 18th Air Support Operations Group, the 21st and 24th Special Tactics Squadrons, the Combat Control School and the 427th Special Operations Squadron. Roughly 2,100 active-duty Airmen call Pope home, inside a post with more than 48,000 soldiers, and the 9,501-foot runway hosts transient C-17s and C-130s around the clock for joint airborne training.
The airfield sits on the north edge of the post, about 12 miles northwest of downtown Fayetteville and right against the town of Spring Lake, with Raleigh an hour north. This is the Sandhills: humid subtropical, pine and sand, summers near 90 degrees with afternoon storms, mild winters, and a hurricane season that has flooded the Cape Fear River twice in the last decade. For a TDY traveler the practical questions are which gate is open when you land, whether Moon Hall has a room, and how to avoid Bragg Boulevard at 1700. This guide covers all three.
Weather
July highs average about 89°F with heavy humidity and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms; January lows sit around 35°F with highs near 50°F, and the area gets roughly 45 inches of rain a year. Snow is rare but ice storms happen most winters.
Best months
April-May and late September-October
Tough months
July-August for heat and humidity on the ramp, and August-October hurricane season: Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018) flooded parts of Fayetteville along the Cape Fear River.
Getting there
- Fly into Fayetteville Regional (FAY), served by American and Delta through Charlotte, Atlanta and DC; it is about 12 miles and 25 minutes from Pope via the All American Freeway or Bragg Boulevard. Raleigh-Durham (RDU) has far more nonstops and is 60-75 minutes north on US 401 or I-40/NC 210. Rent a car either way; there is no useful transit to Pope.
- Pope's own Gate 18 at Manchester Road (off NC 24/87 in Spring Lake) is open weekdays 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closed weekends and federal holidays, as are Butner Road and Rock Merritt. The 24/7 Fort Bragg gates are Yadkin Road, Canopy Lane, Longstreet Road, Chicken Road, Honeycutt Road, R. Miller Road and Linden Oaks; Knox Street is closed to non-commercial traffic. Confirm on the Fort Bragg access-control page before an odd-hours arrival.
- The All American Visitor Control Center (Building H-1575, at the All American Freeway entrance) processes visitor passes 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, 910-907-5165 or 5166. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport; Fort Bragg has been on 100 percent ID checks since 2020 and Trusted Traveler is suspended. The VCC stays open even though the gate behind it is closed.
- The All American Freeway gate, the traditional main entrance, closed 27 July 2026 for a bridge and freeway rebuild expected to run 18 to 24 months. Fort Bragg is routing traffic to Yadkin Road and Canopy Lane; expect heavier backups there at 0600-0730 and 1600-1730. From Fayetteville, Bragg Boulevard to Butner Road or Murchison Road to Honeycutt are the sensible lines to Pope.

- Lodging is IHG Army Hotels, not an Air Force Inn.
- The main desk is Moon Hall, Building D-3601 Darby Loop, Fort Bragg, NC 28310 (910-396-7700 per Fort Bragg MWR and directory listings); the desk is listed as 24 hours with check-in at 1400 and checkout at 1200, and it is also the check-in point for the Carolina Inn on the Pope side of post and the Normandy House.
- Military OneSource's Pope page lists 910-394-4131 for reservations, so try both.
- A limited number of pet suites are available with a nightly surcharge and current vaccination records.
- Because IHG Army Hotels is privatized lodging, non-availability paperwork works differently than at an Air Force Inn; ask the desk for a certificate of non-availability if they are full and confirm with your orders-issuing AO what your service requires.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
We are expanding at Pope Field. If you have orders to the 43rd AMOG, the Combat Control School, the 18th ASOG or a Green Ramp exercise, send us your dates and we will let you know what we can set up inside the $124 Fayetteville rate with DTS-ready receipts.
Pope Field crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-post family housing is run by Corvias Military Housing, with Air Force-legacy neighborhoods such as Pope, Ardennes and Bataan on the Pope side of post.
- Every arriving family must clear the Housing Services Office in the Soldier Support Center, Building 4-2843 on Normandy Drive (910-396-1022), before signing an off-post lease; the Corvias leasing office is at 2850 Compass Court (910-495-0878).
- Wait times depend on rank and bedroom count.
- Off post, the Fayetteville market is one of the cheaper metros in the Southeast (Military OneSource pegs cost of living about 16 percent below the U.S. average), and many officers and SOF families buy in Harnett or Moore County rather than rent.
BAH 2026 · MHA NC182
- 2026 BAH for MHA NC182 (Fort Bragg / Fayetteville), per published 2026 tables: E-5 approximately $1,806 with dependents and $1,527 without; O-3 approximately $2,175 with dependents and $1,956 without.
- Rates rose about 1.6 percent from 2025.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Spring Lake
The town at Pope's front door: modest rentals and older ranches, a Manchester Road commute measured in minutes, Cumberland County schools, and the lowest prices in the area.
Anderson Creek / Linden Oaks (Harnett County)
Newer subdivisions north of post along NC 87 and Ray Road where a lot of Airmen buy; Gordon Elementary on the Linden Oaks side is DoDEA and the Linden Oaks gate is 24/7.
Haymount / Downtown Fayetteville
Historic bungalows, walkable Hay Street restaurants and Segra Stadium, closest to the Womack and hospital corridor, with a Bragg Boulevard commute that gets slow at shift change.
Hope Mills / Jack Britt area
Suburban southwest Fayetteville with the schools most families ask about (Jack Britt High) and big-box convenience, but the longest daily drive to Pope.
Southern Pines / Pinehurst / Whispering Pines
Golf-resort charm in Moore County, good schools, pricier homes, and a 40-minute NC 24/87 commute that a large share of SOF and officer families accept happily.
Schools & childcare
- Fort Bragg has its own DoDEA district: nine schools serving PreK through grade 8 for families in on-post housing, including Albritton Middle, Bowley, Devers and Irwin on main post and Gordon Elementary in Linden Oaks. High schoolers in on-post housing attend Cumberland County public high schools.
- Off post, Cumberland County Schools covers Fayetteville, Spring Lake and Hope Mills and has designated every one of its schools a Purple Star school, with Military Family Life Counselors and Student-2-Student programs. Harnett County (Anderson Creek), Hoke County (Raeford) and Moore County (Southern Pines and Pinehurst) each have their own districts and their own reputations; ask the School Liaison before you sign a lease.
- School Liaison / School Support Services: Soldier Support Center, Building 4-2843, Normandy Drive, Fort Bragg; 910-432-1023 or 910-396-3338; fortbragg_schoolliaison@army.mil.
- Childcare runs through Army Child and Youth Services, with multiple Child Development Centers across post including one within a mile of Pope. Waitlists are long at the largest post in the Army; register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders and ask about Family Child Care homes as a bridge.
Healthcare
- Womack Army Medical Center on main post is a full hospital with a 24/7 Emergency Department (910-907-6559) and a central appointment line at 910-907-APPT (2778); the 43rd Medical Squadron on Pope handles Air Force flight medicine and readiness.
- For emergencies off post, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville is the region's Level II trauma center; FirstHealth Moore Regional in Pinehurst serves the Southern Pines side.
- TRICARE East region, administered by Humana Military.
On base
- Commissary
None on Pope itself; the Fort Bragg North Commissary at 3571 Butner Road is the closest, with a second, larger South Post commissary on Canopy Lane.
- Exchange
Pope has its own Exchange mini-mall with a shoppette, barber and food outlets; the big Fort Bragg Main Exchange is on Canopy Lane on South Post.
- Fitness
Hercules Fitness Center on Pope, plus more than a dozen Fort Bragg MWR gyms across post; Pope also has an MWR Outdoor Recreation office for kayak, camping and trailer rentals.
- Dining
The Airmen's Center dining facility on Pope serves the Air Force population; Fort Bragg DFACs and the Exchange food courts cover everything else, and Spring Lake has the closest off-post fast food.
- MWR
Fort Bragg Family and MWR runs everything from the Iron Mike Conference Center to the Smith Lake recreation area and the Ryder Golf Course; Pope's 43rd Force Support Squadron handles Air Force-specific programs.
- Newcomers
Pope publishes its own electronic sponsor packet and the 43rd FSS Military and Family Readiness office briefs inbound Airmen; Fort Bragg's Soldier Support Center on Normandy Drive is the one-stop for housing, schools and ID cards.

Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01The All American Freeway gate is closed until roughly 2028. If your GPS or your sponsor's old directions send you there, you will hit a barricade; route to Yadkin Road or Canopy Lane after hours and Butner Road or Manchester on weekdays.
- 02Pope's Manchester gate (Gate 18) does not open on weekends or holidays. A Friday-night arrival from RDU means entering through a 24/7 Fort Bragg gate and driving across post on Reilly Road, so give yourself an extra 15 minutes.
- 03Call Moon Hall the day you get orders. Rooms disappear when the 82nd runs a division-level exercise or a Joint Forcible Entry rehearsal, and those rarely show up on your calendar in advance.
- 04Bring a REAL ID or passport. Fort Bragg has been at 100 percent ID checks since 2020, and a non-compliant license means a trip to the Visitor Control Center even if you have a CAC-holding sponsor.
- 05Hurricane season matters here even 100 miles inland: Matthew and Florence both flooded Fayetteville neighborhoods along the Cape Fear. Watch Fort Bragg's Facebook page and the NWS Raleigh office from August through October.
- 06Summer ramp work means 95-degree heat and daily 1500 thunderstorms. Pack for humidity, keep electrolytes in the car, and expect lightning holds to push airdrop windows into the evening.
- 07Bragg Boulevard and Murchison Road crawl between 1600 and 1800, and Spring Lake's NC 24/87 corridor backs up whenever the Manchester gate line spills onto the highway. Leave early or eat dinner in Spring Lake and drive back after.
- 08If you are PCSing, get on the Corvias list and MilitaryChildCare.com before you leave your current base; wait times are driven by rank and bedroom count, and the CDCs on the largest post in the Army fill fast.
