Overview
Seymour Johnson is the Strike Eagle's home. The 4th Fighter Wing hosts more than half of the Air Force's F-15E squadrons, and its 333rd 'Lancers' and 334th 'Eagles' run the only F-15E Formal Training Unit — an eight-and-a-half-month B-Course, two classes a year per squadron, sending more than 80 new pilots and weapons systems officers to the fleet annually. Next to them, the 335th and 336th deploy operationally, and the Air Force Reserve's 916th Air Refueling Wing flies KC-46A Pegasus tankers off the same runway. About 4,100 active-duty Airmen, 882 reservists, 1,000 civilians, and 6,000 family members call the base home, and it's the only Air Force base named for a Navy officer: Goldsboro native Lt. Seymour A. Johnson, a test pilot killed in 1941.
Goldsboro is a working eastern-North Carolina city of about 33,000, an hour east of Raleigh on US-70 and roughly 90 minutes from the beaches at Atlantic Beach. It's humid subtropical: real summer heat and humidity, mild winters with the occasional dusting of snow, and a hurricane season that has twice put the Neuse River over its banks in the last decade. For a TDY traveler that means three things — you need a car, you want air conditioning that works, and you should know your flood-prone roads before the first September storm.
Weather
Goldsboro averages a 90°F high and 71°F low in July and a 53°F high with 33°F lows in January, with about 49 inches of rain a year and only around 4 inches of snow. Summer humidity is the daily reality; hurricane remnants are the seasonal one.
Best months
April-May and late September-November
Tough months
July-August for heat and humidity, and August-October for hurricane season — Florence (2018) dropped nearly 15 inches of rain here and pushed the Neuse River to a 27.6-foot crest, flooding parts of the base and city.
Getting there
- Fly into Raleigh-Durham International (RDU), about 70 miles west. Take I-40 East about 10 miles, exit onto I-440 East, then US-70 East to Goldsboro and follow signs to the base — call it 90 minutes with traffic. Kinston's regional jetport is 28 miles east but doesn't help a TDY traveler; book a rental car at RDU, because nothing in Goldsboro is walkable from the base.
- Berkeley Gate (1050 Wright Brothers Ave, off N Berkeley Blvd) is the main gate and the only one open 24/7. Slocumb Gate (all traffic, including RVs and commercial) and Oak Forest Gate are Monday-Friday 0600-1800. Hours change with FPCON, so confirm on the 4th Security Forces / base site before an odd-hours arrival.
- The Visitor Control Center is at the Berkeley Gate; the base lists 919-722-1344 for visitor passes and notes the center closes at 4:30 p.m. Bring your CAC or REAL ID, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; non-DoD visitors need a sponsor and a background check, which the base says can take time — start it before you travel. Confirm current hours on seymourjohnson.af.mil.
- GPS loves to route you to Slocumb Gate. If you arrive after 1800 or on a weekend, navigate to 'Seymour Johnson Berkeley Gate' or any point on N Berkeley Blvd instead. Berkeley Blvd is also the base's retail strip, so the 0700 and 1600 pushes stack up at the light in front of the gate.

- If the inn can't house you, get your non-availability number before booking commercially — and note the inn's own policy: a full pet-friendly unit does not generate a non-availability for a commercial hotel.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
We're expanding at Seymour Johnson AFB. If you have orders for the B-Course, a KC-46 tour, or a maintenance TDY, send us your dates and we'll tell you what we can put together near the Berkeley Gate at or under the $110 rate, with DTS-ready receipts.
Seymour Johnson AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is privatized under Mayroad Military Living (the community was managed by Corvias until the portfolio changed hands); Air Force Housing counts roughly 680 homes.
- The Military Housing Office is at the Mayroad Community Center, 600 Kenly Rd, 919-722-0362, Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., and the property management office answers at 919-988-6920.
- Off base, a three-bedroom rental in Goldsboro averaged roughly $1,450-$1,500 a month in 2025-26 listings, with Mount Olive houses commonly under $1,200 and newer Pikeville and Walnut Creek homes above that.
- Buying is realistic here — Wayne County median sale prices sit well below the Raleigh market — and the MHO referral desk covers a 50-mile radius.
BAH 2026 · MHA NC183
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $1,521 | $1,428 |
| O-3 | $2,226 | $1,794 |
- 2026 BAH for MHA NC183 (Goldsboro / Seymour Johnson AFB) is approximately $1,521 with dependents and $1,428 without for an E-5, and $2,226 with dependents and $1,794 without for an O-3, per published 2026 tables (up 9.7% from 2025).
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Berkeley Boulevard / Windsor Creek (Goldsboro)
The closest option — subdivisions and apartments along the base's retail corridor, minutes from the Berkeley Gate, with the tradeoff of Goldsboro city schools and evening traffic on the boulevard.
Walnut Creek
A small incorporated village southeast of town built around a golf course and lake; larger homes, quiet streets, and a short back-road run to the gate.
Pikeville / Fremont
Fast-growing farm-town communities north of Goldsboro on US-117 where new subdivisions are replacing tobacco fields; military families like the Purple Star schools and the straight shot to the Oak Forest Gate.
La Grange
A small town east on US-70 toward Kinston with historic homes and lower prices — character over square footage, and an easy highway commute.
Mount Olive / Princeton
Mount Olive (south, US-117) is the cheapest place in the county to rent a three-bedroom house; Princeton (west, US-70) trades a longer drive for Johnston County schools and a quicker hop to Raleigh.
Schools & childcare
- There are no DoDEA schools on base; children in base housing attend Wayne County Public Schools, which zones the installation to its Goldsboro-area elementary, middle, and high schools — check the district's Military Child Education page for current assignments.
- Wayne County Public Schools is a Purple Star district for the fifth straight year, with all 33 schools holding the designation and a full-time district Military Liaison who works directly with the base. Nearby Johnston County (Princeton) and Wayne Country Day, Faith Christian Academy, Wayne Christian School, and Wayne STEM Academy give families private and charter options; NC Virtual Public School covers online coursework.
- The School Liaison Officer is at 1515 Goodson St, Bldg 3508, Room 103, 919-722-5810, Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. For special-education transitions, the district's Exceptional Children Program is 919-705-6027 and the base EFMP office is 919-722-0809.
- The Child Development Center at 1030 Langley Ave (919-722-1198) serves ages 6 weeks to 5 years, 6:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays, with capacity for 194 kids and $8/hour drop-in care; Family Child Care (919-722-7194) covers 2 weeks to 12 years including nights and shift work. Put your request in on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders — the waitlist runs months.
Healthcare
- The 4th Medical Group's Thomas Koritz Clinic (2803 Medical Campus Drive) is an outpatient clinic — primary care, dental, pharmacy, lab, X-ray, and select specialties — with no emergency room and no on-base ambulance. Appointment line 919-722-1802, dental 919-722-1933, Nurse Advice Line 800-874-2273 option 1, clinic hours Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
- Emergencies go to UNC Health Wayne (Wayne Memorial Hospital), 2700 Wayne Memorial Drive in Goldsboro, about 10 minutes from the Berkeley Gate; Wayne County EMS transports there. Level I trauma is at WakeMed Raleigh or ECU Health in Greenville, each about an hour away.
- Seymour Johnson is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military. TDY travelers on Prime should call the Nurse Advice Line before using urgent care off base to keep the visit covered.

Cliffs of the Neuse State Park
Twenty minutes southeast in Seven Springs, 90-foot bluffs of sand, clay, and fossil shell drop straight to the Neuse River. Hike the rim trails, swim or kayak the spring-fed lake in summer, and rent a cabin if you want a weekend off the grid.

Eastern NC barbecue
Goldsboro is a stop on the NC Historic Barbecue Trail thanks to Wilber's Barbecue on US-70 East — whole-hog, wood-smoked, vinegar-sauced, and a pilgrimage for people who care about such things. Go for lunch; it's ten minutes from the gate.

Downtown Goldsboro
Center Street has been rebuilt block by block: coffee, a fresh market, a wine bar, a brewery or two, and the Paramount Theatre. Center Street Jams brings free concerts downtown on summer evenings from May through August.

The Crystal Coast
Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, and Morehead City are about 90 minutes east on US-70 — close enough for a day on the sand and a seafood dinner. Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are roughly two hours south.

Raleigh
An hour west on US-70 and I-40 gets you the state capital: museums on Bicentennial Plaza, Canes hockey and NC State football, and a proper restaurant scene. RDU is on the far side, so a Raleigh night pairs well with an airport run.
Official site ↗Waynesborough Park and the Wayne County Museum
Waynesborough Historical Village on US-117 South preserves the county's original 1780s town site with relocated period buildings and river trails; the Wayne County Museum downtown covers the base's WWII origins and the 1961 Goldsboro B-52 incident.
Official site ↗Mount Olive and the Pickle Festival
Fifteen miles south is the home of Mt. Olive Pickle Company, and the NC Pickle Festival each spring turns the town into a one-day street fair. The rest of the year, Mount Olive is a quiet college town with the cheapest rent in the county.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Hurricane season is not theoretical here. Matthew (2016) and Florence (2018) both flooded Goldsboro and the base — Florence dumped nearly 15 inches and the Neuse crested at 27.6 feet. Know which roads near your rental go under (the low crossings toward the river do) and follow the 4th FW on social media from August through October.
- 02If you're inbound for the B-Course, book the Southern Pines Inn the day your orders publish — TDY reservations open a full year out, and eight months of lodging is exactly what PCS season eats. If you're going commercial, get the non-availability number in writing before you sign a lease or a hotel folio.
- 03Berkeley Gate is the only 24/7 gate. Slocumb and Oak Forest close at 1800 and all weekend, and GPS routes to Slocumb by default; program 'Seymour Johnson Berkeley Gate' instead.
- 04Goldsboro is a standard-rate town ($110 lodging), and the hotels on Berkeley Blvd and US-70 know it. Rates can spike above per diem when a class starts, an inspection lands, or the air show is on — lock in lodging early rather than trusting walk-up pricing.
- 05Summer flying starts early to beat the heat, and so does the gate traffic. The 0630-0730 push down N Berkeley Blvd is real; living east of the boulevard or in Walnut Creek keeps you off it.
- 06Pack for both seasons. July afternoons hit 90°F with humidity that makes it feel hotter; January mornings are in the 30s, and every few years an ice storm shuts the county for a day or two.
- 07The Koritz Clinic has no ER. Save UNC Health Wayne's address (2700 Wayne Memorial Drive) in your phone before you need it, and call the Nurse Advice Line first if you're on TRICARE Prime.
- 08PCS families: the CDC waitlist is measured in months and the 194-slot center is the only one on base. Request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the moment you have orders, and ask the MHO (919-722-0362) about Mayroad's current wait by bedroom count before you decide between on-base and off.
