Overview

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is the Marine Corps' East Coast center of gravity: II Marine Expeditionary Force headquarters, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, MARSOC, and a set of satellite camps that each run their own schoolhouse. School of Infantry–East at Camp Geiger trains every East Coast enlisted Marine after boot camp, Camp Johnson houses the Combat Service Support Schools, Courthouse Bay hosts the Marine Corps Engineer School, and Stone Bay runs Weapons Training Battalion. With Marine Corps Air Station New River next door and Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune on Brewster Boulevard, roughly 137,000 people are tied to the installation, and a steady share of them are here on temporary orders.

Jacksonville is a working military town on the New River about 50 miles north of Wilmington, ringed by pine flats, tidal creeks, and beach communities. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, winters are short and mild with the occasional hard freeze, and the coast sits squarely in Atlantic hurricane country from June through November. For a TDY traveler the practical facts are simple: you need a car, the base is enormous so gate choice matters, and the closer you stay to Western Boulevard, Piney Green, or Sneads Ferry the more time you keep for yourself.

Weather

Jacksonville runs humid subtropical: July highs average about 89 F with heavy humidity and near-daily thunderstorm chances, while January averages a high near 56 F and a low around 34 F. Annual precipitation is roughly 58 inches, spread through the year with a wet late-summer peak. Hurricane season runs June through November, and the base has taken direct hits, most recently Hurricane Florence in 2018.

Best months

April through early June and late September through November

Tough months

July through September for heat, humidity, and hurricane risk; late January and February bring damp cold and occasional ice

Getting there

  • Fly into Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) in Richlands, served by American Eagle and Delta Connection; it is about 30 miles and 35 to 45 minutes to the Holcomb Boulevard main gate via NC-111 and US-17, and rental cars are on site.
  • Wilmington (ILM) is about an hour south on US-17 and usually has more flight options; Raleigh-Durham (RDU) is about two and a half hours and often the cheapest fare for a long stay.
  • The Holcomb Boulevard main gate, Wilson Gate, and the Sneads Ferry gate on NC-172 are open 24 hours; the Midway Park, Camp Johnson, and Stone Bay gates were also listed as 24-hour as of early 2026. Confirm current status on the base Gate Hours page before an early-morning report.
  • Piney Green Gate runs weekdays only, roughly 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. inbound and to 6 p.m. outbound, and is closed on weekends and holiday liberty periods; the TOP Gate has operated on reduced hours since 2024.
  • The Visitor Center and Pass and Registration office is at 812 Holcomb Boulevard just outside the main gate, open weekdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closed weekends and holidays; visitors without a CAC need a background check and, if driving, license, registration, and proof of insurance.
  • Expect stacked-up traffic on Western Boulevard, Lejeune Boulevard, and Holcomb Boulevard between 0600 and 0800 and again from 1500 to 1730, and watch for rolling gate closures for maintenance that the base announces on its website and Facebook page.

TDY lodging

On base

On-base lodging is the Inns of the Corps Lejeune Inn, run by MCCS, at 896 Holcomb Boulevard about four miles inside the main gate and within walking distance of the Main Exchange, food court, and commissary.

  • On-base lodging is the Inns of the Corps Lejeune Inn, run by MCCS, at 896 Holcomb Boulevard about four miles inside the main gate and within walking distance of the Main Exchange, food court, and commissary.
  • The front desk number listed by MCCS and base directories is (910) 451-3041, with online booking through the MCCS lodging reservations portal.
  • Official-travel (TAD/TDY) reservations open 90 days out, PCS reservations up to a year out, and leisure stays 60 days out.
  • Ask specifically for a non-availability confirmation if they cannot take you, because without it your DTS voucher will be questioned.
  • MCAS New River has its own smaller Inns of the Corps property if you are working the air station side.
  • Confirm current hours, rates, and pet policy on the MCCS Lejeune-New River lodging page.

Off-base per diem

  • Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
  • No current rate is quoted here.
  • Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
  • A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.

The crashpad option

Camp Lejeune orders are usually measured in weeks or months, whether it is a course at Camp Johnson, a range detail at Stone Bay, or a medical rotation at the hospital, and a furnished crashpad at or below $110 a night with a kitchen and laundry beats stretching per diem across hotel breakfasts and food-court dinners. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Camp Lejeune yet; we are expanding here, so if you own a furnished place in Jacksonville, Sneads Ferry, or Swansboro, or you are a traveler who needs one, reach out and we will connect you.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Family housing is privatized through Atlantic Marine Corps Communities (AMCC), which operates twelve neighborhoods across Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River, including Tarawa Terrace, Midway Park, Knox, Berkeley Manor, and Paradise Point.
  • The Military Housing Office oversees more than 5,000 homes and says wait times average about a month but can stretch to six months for the most popular floor plans and areas.
  • Off base, Jacksonville has a deep rental market built around the base, from apartment complexes along Western Boulevard and Gum Branch Road to single-family rentals in Sneads Ferry, Hubert, Richlands, and Swansboro.
  • Rents track BAH closely, so a rate change tends to move the whole market.
  • Register with the Military Housing Office early and use the AMCC application to hold your place in line while you look.

Piney Green / Hubert

Newer subdivisions and townhomes along NC-24 east of the base, popular with families who want a yard and a quick weekday gate

Schools & childcare

  • Children living on base attend DoDEA Camp Lejeune Schools: seven schools including Lejeune High School, Brewster Middle School, a primary and an intermediate school, and three elementary schools spread across the housing areas.
  • Off-base families are zoned to Onslow County Schools, one of the largest districts in eastern North Carolina; Jacksonville High, Northside, Southwest, Swansboro, Richlands, White Oak, and Dixon are the high schools most military families end up in depending on address.
  • MCCS Child and Youth Programs run several Child Development Centers on the main base and at New River, plus school-age care and youth centers; wait lists are real, so register on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as orders are in hand.
  • The School Liaison Program at Marine and Family Programs helps with transfers, DoDEA-to-county transitions, and special-education records; Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville is the closest college campus and offers evening and online programs used by many active-duty students.
06

Healthcare

  • Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune at 100 Brewster Boulevard is a full hospital with a 24-hour emergency department, inpatient care, surgery, labor and delivery, and specialty clinics, serving more than 150,000 beneficiaries; branch health clinics at Camp Geiger, Camp Johnson, Courthouse Bay, and New River handle routine care for students and units.
  • Camp Lejeune is in the TRICARE East Region, administered by Humana Military; TDY travelers on Prime should use the hospital or a branch clinic for routine needs and call the Nurse Advice Line before seeking urgent care off base.
  • The nearest civilian hospital is Onslow Memorial Hospital on Western Boulevard in Jacksonville; the region's Level I trauma centers are New Hanover Regional Medical Center (Novant Health) in Wilmington and ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, both about an hour or more away.
  • The main hospital pharmacy handles new prescriptions and activations, with additional pharmacy windows at the branch clinics and an Exchange pharmacy option; TRICARE network retail pharmacies around Jacksonville fill the gaps after hours.

Insider tips

  1. 01Figure out which camp your course meets at before you book lodging: Camp Geiger and Camp Johnson are on the north side by New River, while Courthouse Bay and Stone Bay are 30 to 40 minutes south near Sneads Ferry.
  2. 02Use the Sneads Ferry gate on NC-172 for anything on the south side; it is 24 hours and skips the Western Boulevard traffic entirely.
  3. 03Piney Green Gate closes on weekends and holiday liberty periods, so do not plan a Saturday arrival through it.
  4. 04Book the Lejeune Inn the day your orders hit and get the non-availability confirmation number in writing if they are full; DTS reviewers here ask for it.
  5. 05Rolling gate closures for maintenance are announced on the base website and Facebook page a few days ahead; check the night before a 0500 report.
  6. 06Per diem is the flat $110 standard rate year-round, so a summer beach-house listing that jumps in June will not be covered; lock in a monthly crashpad rate instead.
  7. 07Keep a hurricane plan: from August through October know your evacuation route (US-17 and NC-24 west) and where your unit posts destructive-weather conditions.
  8. 08The Beirut Memorial observance each October 23 is a big deal in Jacksonville; if you are on base that week, go.

FAQ

Can I stay at the Lejeune Inn on leisure travel or as a retiree?
Yes. Inns of the Corps properties take active duty, retirees, family members, and DoD civilians on a space-available basis; leisure reservations open 60 days out and official travel gets priority. Confirm eligibility details and current rates on the MCCS lodging page or by phone.
Do I need a rental car at Camp Lejeune?
Almost certainly. The base is 156,000 acres with satellite camps 30 to 40 minutes apart, Jacksonville transit does not enter the installation, and the airport is 30 miles away. Budget for a car in your travel authorization.
What is the difference between Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River?
MCAS New River is the Marine Corps air station just across the New River from Jacksonville, home to 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing's MV-22 Osprey and CH-53 helicopter squadrons. It shares MCCS, housing, schools, and medical support with Camp Lejeune but has its own gates and its own Inns of the Corps property.
How far are the beaches from Jacksonville?
Onslow Beach on base is about 25 minutes from mainside; North Topsail Beach and Surf City are 30 to 40 minutes south via Sneads Ferry; Emerald Isle is about 45 minutes east via Swansboro. All are day-trip easy, and Onslow Beach is free for ID card holders.
