Overview
Tyndall is Air Combat Command's F-35A rebuild. The 325th Fighter Wing, the "Checkertails," is standing up three operational F-35A squadrons on a base that Hurricane Michael flattened in October 2018 — the first full squadron of 26 jets landed by January 2026 and new hangars opened the same year. Alongside the wing sit the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group, which flies QF-16 target drones and runs live-fire WSEP shoots over the Gulf, and Headquarters First Air Force with its 601st Air Operations Center, the folks who watch North American airspace. About 2,900 Total Force personnel work here day to day, and the number swells every time Checkered Flag brings visiting fighter squadrons to the ramp.
The base sits on a skinny peninsula between St. Andrew Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, 12 miles east of Panama City on US-98. Expect a humid subtropical climate: July highs around 91°F with afternoon thunderstorms, January highs in the mid-60s, and roughly 64 inches of rain a year. For a TDY traveler, three things matter — the Sabre Gate is the only gate you really need, the Sand Dollar Inn fills up fast during exercises, and beach-season hotel pricing is why the per diem rate jumps in summer.
Weather
Summers run hot and wet — July averages a 91°F high with daily thunderstorm chances and August is the wettest month of a roughly 64-inch rain year. Winters are mild, with January highs in the mid-60s and only a handful of near-freezing mornings.
Best months
October, November, March, April
Tough months
June through September for heat, humidity, and hurricane season; September and October are the peak Gulf hurricane months, and Michael hit on October 10
Getting there
- Fly into Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP), northwest of Panama City; it's about a 45-minute drive to the Sabre Gate via SR-388/SR-77 through Panama City and east on US-98. Rent a car — there is no practical transit to the base, and Tyndall is spread across a long peninsula.
- The Sabre Gate off US-98 is the main entrance and is reported open 24/7 with after-hours visitor passes issued at the gate. The Cleveland Gate handles commercial vehicles on weekday hours, and other access points have shifted repeatedly during the rebuild — confirm current hours on tyndall.af.mil or the 325th FW social feeds before you drive.
- The Visitor Control Center is just outside the Sabre Gate at 2580 Hwy 98 (850-283-4070), listed open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.; some sources show limited Saturday hours, so call ahead. Bring a REAL ID or passport, plus orders if you need DBIDS enrollment; sponsors must handle guest passes.
- US-98 is the only road in and out, and it doubles as the beach route — expect slow crawls through Callaway on weekday afternoons and heavy summer weekend traffic. Construction convoys for the rebuild add to it; give yourself an extra 15 minutes for a morning show time.

Tyndall AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing is privatized under Tyndall AFB Homes, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, with an office on Sentry Lane on base; the neighborhoods are being rebuilt in phases, and Sabre Palms (three- and four-bedroom homes for E-1 to E-6) was the first delivered in 2020.
- Confirm the current office number on tyndallhousing.com, since listings conflict.
- Off base, Panama City Beach rentals averaged about $1,600 a month in 2026, while the typical Panama City home value was roughly $278,000 as of June 2026 — buying is realistic in Callaway, Lynn Haven, and Panama City, less so at the beach.

Callaway
Working-family town right outside the gate with established subdivisions, modest prices, and Tyndall Academy and Rutherford High nearby — the shortest commute you'll find.
Parker

Lynn Haven
The pick for families who want strong schools and newer subdivisions; sits north of Panama City on the bay and means a cross-town drive on US-98 every morning.
Panama City
The county seat with the widest range of rentals, restaurants, and the two hospitals; downtown and St. Andrews are walkable and reviving after Michael.
Panama City Beach
Resort living with the white sand out the door, but you pay for it in rent, summer traffic, and a 35- to 45-minute haul across the Hathaway Bridge to the gate.

Off duty

St. Andrews State Park
Just across the pass from the base's western tip and about 25 minutes by road, with 1.5 miles of white-sand beach, a jetty for snorkeling, and a shuttle to Shell Island. Go early on summer weekends — the lot fills by 10.

Shell Island
A seven-mile undeveloped barrier island between the Gulf and St. Andrew Bay. Rent a pontoon from Beacon Beach Marina on base or take the shuttle from the state park; bring your own shade and water.

Mexico Beach and Cape San Blas
Head east on US-98 about 30 minutes for Mexico Beach, still rebuilding but quiet, and another 40 for the dunes and dark skies of St. Joseph Peninsula State Park.
Wikipedia ↗Fishing and diving
Charter boats run out of Capt. Anderson's Marina and the base marina for red snapper (season usually opens in June) and grouper; artificial reefs and wrecks off Panama City make it a well-known Gulf dive town.
Gulf Coast Salute Air Show
Tyndall's air show has been staged on Panama City Beach in April; F-35s and the drones of the 53rd WEG headline. Check the base site for the current year's date.
Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01Hurricane season is real here — Michael came ashore as a Category 5 in October 2018 and left every building on base uninhabitable. Keep a go-bag, know the US-98 and SR-231 evacuation routes, and watch 325th FW social media from June through November.
- 02US-98 is the only road to the gate. A wreck on the Dupont Bridge or the Hathaway Bridge can add 30 minutes; if you live at the beach, build that into your show time.
- 03Book the Sand Dollar Inn the day you have orders. Checkered Flag and WSEP fill it weeks out, and PCS families with TLF priority take the multi-bedroom units first.
- 04Summer per diem jumps to $147 but so do hotel rates; a June TDY booked in March will save you a fight with a beachfront rate that doubles by Memorial Day.
- 05Pack for sweat: afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork from June to September. Keep a rain shell in the car and plan runs for early morning.
- 06Cell coverage and Wi-Fi in the rebuilt areas are still catching up; download maps and your DTS documents before you drive out on the peninsula.
- 07The base is 18 miles long and most services cluster around Mississippi Road and Suwannee Road — ask your sponsor for a current map, since construction reroutes streets often.
- 08Bay County is Central Time even though most of Florida is Eastern; set your watch when you cross the Apalachicola River driving in from the east.
