Signal and Cyber courses are long. That is the whole story behind Fort Gordon per diem. A three-week conference TDY (temporary duty) almost never goes sideways financially. A six-month Captains Career Course, a year-plus AIT (advanced individual training) pipeline, or a cadre tour at the schoolhouse is where the money gets decided — by how fast you got lodging, whether you hold a certificate of non-availability, and what you are paying per night once the hotel desk tells you they are full. Start with the current Augusta lodging and M&IE rates before you plan anything else, because every decision below runs off that number.
One naming note so nothing confuses you in DTS (Defense Travel System, the system you file travel in): Fort Gordon became Fort Eisenhower in October 2023. Orders, lodging systems, and rate lookups may still say either one. Augusta, Georgia is the city your rate is keyed to no matter which name is printed on your paperwork. The full Fort Gordon base guide covers gates, neighborhoods, and the Masters-week problem in more detail.
What does Fort Gordon per diem actually cover?
Per diem splits into two separate buckets. Lodging is reimbursed up to a nightly ceiling — you get back what you actually spend, with a receipt, capped at the published rate. M&IE (meals and incidental expenses) is a flat daily amount you receive whether you eat steak or ramen. The lodging ceiling is where crashpads and hotels compete. The M&IE is where you quietly keep or lose a few hundred dollars a month depending on whether you have a kitchen.
Here is the part that catches Signal and Cyber students: a published ceiling is not a promise of reimbursement. If adequate government quarters are available on post, you are expected to use them, and your reimbursement can be limited to the government rate. The ceiling only becomes your working budget once you hold a certificate of non-availability — the "non-A" — from on-post lodging.
Course lengths at the Cyber Center of Excellence make this high-stakes. Signal and Cyber AIT runs from a few months to well over a year depending on MOS. Cyber and Signal BOLC (Basic Officer Leader Course) runs several months. The Captains Career Course is roughly five months. Instructors, training developers, and joint and Reserve personnel supporting ARCYBER, NSA Georgia, and the Cyber Protection Brigade rotate in on orders of similar length. Multiply a nightly gap of $20 across 150 nights and you are talking about real money out of your own pocket.
We will say this plainly: Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Fort Gordon yet. We are expanding into Augusta. You can still see what we are building near Fort Gordon, and if you own a furnished place in Grovetown, Evans, or Martinez, that page is where to start a conversation.
What rules actually decide the money?
Four things control your outcome. None of them are complicated, but all of them are time-sensitive.
1. Government quarters and the non-A
IHG Army Hotels runs all temporary lodging on Fort Gordon. The check-in desk for every on-post hotel is Griffith Hall, the Holiday Inn Express in Building 250 on Chamberlain Avenue, just inside Gate 1 on the left. The extended-stay Candlewood Suites on post is one of the largest in the IHG Army Hotels system, and it is where long-course students usually end up. Reserve at ihgarmyhotels.com or 1-877-711-8326.
It fills. Course start dates stack arrivals, and short-notice travelers routinely get turned away. That is fine — it is how you get a non-A. Call early, get the non-availability statement in writing, and attach it to your voucher. A verbal "we're full" does not survive an audit.
2. Receipts
Lodging requires an itemized receipt. Not a credit card statement, not a text from a landlord. Itemized: nights, nightly rate, taxes, and any fees broken out. Resort fees, cleaning fees, and pet fees are usually not reimbursable, and if they are buried in a lump-sum charge, your approving official may bounce the whole line. Our walkthrough of what a military crashpad is and how it gets paid for covers the receipt standard in detail.
3. Orders change
Courses slip. Students recycle. Cadre tours extend. A 12-month apartment lease does not care about any of that, and breaking one can cost you two months of rent that no voucher will cover. Read the lease-break clause before you sign anything in Columbia County.
4. The math, done before you book
Run your dates through the TDY per diem calculator to get an honest trip total instead of a nightly number you are guessing at. If your orders send you somewhere with Air Force Inns on post, the on-base lodging cost calculator does the same for government quarters. The JTR (Joint Travel Regulations) governs all of it in general terms; your travel office and approving official apply it to your specific orders, so ask them, in writing, before you commit to a lease.
Where should you live near Fort Gordon, and what does it cost?
Augusta is spread out, and the gate you use matters more than the mileage. Gate 1 is DoD ID only from 5 to 9 a.m. on weekdays. If you are on a visitor pass during those hours, go straight to Gate 6 and skip the U-turn on Gordon Highway. Coming from AGS (Augusta Regional at Bush Field), take Tobacco Road to Gate 5 — about 30 minutes, and it avoids I-520 and Gordon Highway traffic entirely.
| Area | Commute to post | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Grovetown | 10–15 min to Gate 1 via Wrightsboro Road or Jimmie Dyess Parkway | Newest subdivisions, heavy military population, shortest drive |
| Evans | 20–25 min via Belair Road or Washington Road to I-520 | Top-rated schools, Evans Towne Center, families on a PCS |
| Martinez | 20 min via I-520 to Gordon Highway and Gate 6 | Older homes on bigger lots, established neighborhoods |
| West Augusta (Washington Rd / I-20) | 15–20 min via I-520 or Wheeler Road | Apartments and townhomes, closest in-town option for singles |
For PCS (permanent change of station) families, the on-post option is Balfour Beatty Communities, which manages privatized family housing and broke ground in 2023 on Pine Tree Terrace — three- and four-bedroom townhomes and accessible detached homes aimed at privates and junior NCOs. Demand outruns supply. Get on the wait list the day you have orders, not the week you arrive.
Off post, the number that matters is BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing). Fort Gordon sits in military housing area GA073. The 2026 rates published by the installation housing site are $1,890 with dependents and $1,644 without for an E-5, and $2,250 with dependents and $2,058 without for an O-3, effective January 1, 2026. Confirm your own grade and dependency status on the DTMO BAH calculator before you sign a lease — those two examples are not your rate.
One seasonal warning that is unique to Augusta: Masters week, the first full week of April. The garrison warns that lodging is very scarce, rates triple, and hotels sell out months ahead. If your orders touch that week, book the day you receive them. Fort Gordon per diem does not rise to meet a golf tournament. It is the same dynamic that hits Las Vegas during a RED FLAG exercise at Nellis — a single event empties every room in the metro area and the ceiling stays put.
If you want the broader rules in one place, our per diem and reimbursement guide covers non-A lodging, receipts, and vouchers end to end. And if you are an enlisted student comparing dorm life against renting, the same decision tree plays out at Keesler for tech-school retrainees — who gets quarters, who gets a non-A, and why the ceiling decides it.
What is the step-by-step plan?
- Read your orders for the funding line. Are you authorized per diem for lodging, or are you a student on a flat rate? These are different worlds. Ask your training unit, not a classmate.
- Pull the live rate. Check the Augusta lodging and M&IE ceilings for your exact travel dates. Rates change with the fiscal year, and some markets swing by season.
- Call IHG Army Hotels at 1-877-711-8326 immediately. Same day you get orders. Either you get a room at Candlewood Suites or you get a non-A — both outcomes let you move forward.
- Get the non-A in writing. Email, confirmation number, PDF. Something you can attach in DTS.
- Price three off-post options against the ceiling. Hotel, extended-stay, and furnished rental. Compare total cost including taxes and fees, not advertised nightly rate.
- Check the lease-break clause. If the course slips or you recycle, what does it cost you? If the answer is two months of rent, keep shopping.
- Confirm itemized receipts up front. Ask the landlord or host, before you pay a deposit, whether they issue a monthly itemized statement.
- File on schedule. On long TDYs you may be required to file interim vouchers every 30 days. Do not let five months of receipts pile up.
This sequence is base-agnostic. It is the same one we lay out for students heading to formal training at Kirtland, and the same commute-versus-cost tradeoff we work through in the Luke AFB money guide. Fort Gordon's version just has a cyber schoolhouse and a golf tournament attached.
How does a crashpad fit against Fort Gordon per diem?
A crashpad is a furnished room or home rented by the night or month to travelers on orders, priced at or under the government lodging rate, with a real kitchen and itemized receipts built for DTS. The math works best on stays of six weeks or more — which describes almost every student, instructor, and cadre member at the Cyber Center of Excellence.
Here is the honest comparison. A hotel priced at the cap hands you 300 square feet, a mini-fridge, and a lobby breakfast. A crashpad at the same price — Base Crashpads prices at or below the ceiling, with a fixed nightly rate at or under $125 at the properties we run — gives you a kitchen, laundry, and a door that closes on the rest of the house. With a kitchen you keep more of your M&IE instead of eating it at Washington Road restaurants five nights a week. Over five months of Captains Career Course, that difference is not small.
Base Crashpads is founded and run by an active-duty Air Force pilot, with furnished homes serving bases in twelve states. Fort Gordon is not one of them yet. If you are heading to Augusta right now, use the plan above, get your non-A early, and treat a month-to-month furnished rental in Grovetown as your most flexible off-post option. If you own a furnished home near the Cyber Center of Excellence and want to rent to Signal and Cyber students on orders, we want to hear from you.
Find a crashpad near your base — post your dates, vetted local hosts bid, and you pick from the top three. And if Augusta is your base and you own a place, tell us; that is how every one of our markets started.
Frequently asked questions
What per diem applies to Fort Gordon?
Confirm the current lodging allowance and M&IE for your duty location and travel dates with the official GSA rate lookup and your travel office. No current rate is quoted here, because rates change with the fiscal year. Remember that a published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility — if government quarters are available, your reimbursement may be limited to the government rate.
How long are typical courses at Fort Gordon?
Signal and Cyber AIT courses run from a few months to well over a year depending on the MOS. Cyber and Signal BOLC last several months, and the Captains Career Course is about five months. Instructors, cadre, and joint cyber personnel rotate through on orders of similar length, which is why lodging stays tight year-round.
Is the on-post hotel usually full?
It fills with long-course students, so short-notice TDY travelers often receive a certificate of non-availability — especially at course start dates and during Masters week. Call IHG Army Hotels at 1-877-711-8326 as soon as you have orders and get the non-availability statement in writing so you can attach it to your voucher.
What is BAH at Fort Gordon?
Fort Gordon is in military housing area GA073. The 2026 rates published by the installation housing site are $1,890 with dependents and $1,644 without for an E-5, and $2,250 with dependents and $2,058 without for an O-3, effective January 1, 2026. Check your own grade and dependency status on the DTMO BAH calculator — those are examples, not your rate.
Why does Masters week matter to a TDY traveler?
Masters week is the first full week of April, and the garrison warns that lodging in the Augusta area is very scarce during it. Hotel rates triple and rooms sell out months ahead, while your per diem ceiling stays the same. If your orders touch that week, book lodging the day you receive them.
Should I sign a 12-month lease in Grovetown or Evans for a long course?
Only if you understand the lease-break cost. Courses slip, students recycle, and cadre tours extend or shorten. A month-to-month furnished rental usually costs more per night than a year lease but protects you from paying two months of rent on an apartment you no longer need. Read the termination clause before you sign.
