Overview
Beale is the Air Force's reconnaissance base. The 9th Reconnaissance Wing flies the U-2 Dragon Lady and T-38 companion trainers, runs the Common Mission Control Center under the 427th Reconnaissance Squadron, and is working through the U-2's planned retirement in fiscal 2026 while a new battle-management squadron of roughly 140 Airmen moves in. Beside it, the 548th ISR Group processes imagery and signals from around the world, the Reserve 940th Air Refueling Wing flies KC-135s, and the 7th Space Warning Squadron runs the west coast's PAVE PAWS missile-warning radar. Roughly 4,600 active-duty members, 4,300 family members, and about 2,300 civilians, contractors, and reservists work here, plus a large TDY population of analysts, aircrew, and engineers.
The place is Sacramento Valley farm country meeting the Sierra foothills. The base covers nearly 23,000 acres of oak-dotted ranchland (with a seasonal cattle herd) about 15 miles east of Marysville and 50 miles north of Sacramento. Summers are hot and bone-dry, winters are mild and wet with valley fog, and August through October can bring wildfire smoke. For a TDY traveler the practical realities are a long drive from anywhere, one inn on base, a thin hotel market in Marysville and Yuba City, and gates whose hours have been in flux.
Weather
Marysville averages a July high around 96°F with almost no rain, and a January high near 56°F with roughly 4 inches of rain that month. Annual rainfall is about 22 inches, nearly all of it November through March; summer days over 100°F are routine.
Best months
April-May and October-November
Tough months
July-September for 100°F-plus heat and wildfire smoke; December-January for dense tule fog on Highway 70 and 99
Getting there
- Fly into Sacramento International (SMF), about 42 miles and 45-55 minutes from the base via Highway 99 north to Highway 70. Rent a car at the airport; the base notes a cab runs $70 and up, and there is no useful transit to Beale. Oakland and San Francisco are 2.5-3 hours and rarely worth it.
- Gate hours have changed repeatedly in 2025-2026. Both the base and the housing office list the Vassar Lake Gate (off Camp Beale Highway on the Wheatland side) as 24/7. Schneider (main) Gate at the end of North Beale Road has been closed for periods and reopened; a base post in April 2026 listed it 24/7 while the housing office page still showed it closed. Wheatland Gate (Highway 65) and Doolittle Gate (South Beale Road) run roughly 0600-1800 weekdays, and Grass Valley Gate (Smartsville Road side) opens only for weekday rush windows. Confirm on beale.af.mil or the base Facebook page before arriving after hours.
- Visitors and contractors without a DoD ID need a sponsor and should pre-enroll in DBIDS online before arriving; a REAL ID-compliant license or passport is required at the Visitor Center. Plan 30-60 minutes for pass processing on your first morning if you are not pre-enrolled.
- Traffic is light by California standards, but the two-lane stretches of Highway 70 (Marysville-Plumas Lake) and Highway 65 (Wheatland-Lincoln) back up at shift change, and winter fog can drop visibility to a few hundred feet. Add 15 minutes on foggy mornings and watch for farm equipment and deer on North Beale Road and Camp Beale Highway.

The crashpad option
We're expanding at Beale AFB. We are lining up furnished crashpads in Wheatland and Plumas Lake, both inside the $110 Yuba County rate and within 10-25 minutes of a gate, with itemized DTS-ready receipts. Send us your dates and the gate you'll use and we'll tell you what we can hold.
Beale AFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing is privatized under Balfour Beatty Communities (Beale AFB Homes) across five neighborhoods: Beale East, Beale West, Brookview, Lakeview, and Mountain View, with typical junior-NCO homes around 1,600 square feet and three bedrooms.
- Start with the Military Housing Office on base for the waitlist and referral to the Balfour Beatty leasing office.
- Off base, Zillow's mid-2026 market data put median asking rent near $2,050 in Yuba City and about $2,300 in Marysville, and Redfin listed Yuba City's median sale price around $450,000 in spring 2026, so a three-bedroom rental in Wheatland or Plumas Lake generally lands in the $2,200-2,800 range.
- Buying is common for anyone on a three-year tour; Plumas Lake and Lincoln offer the newest inventory.
BAH 2026 · MHA CA033
- Beale is in MHA CA033.
- Per published 2026 tables (Balfour Beatty's Beale housing site and independent BAH calculators agree), E-5 draws approximately $2,967 with dependents and $2,367 without; O-3 draws approximately $3,165 with dependents and $3,066 without.
- Rates dropped slightly from 2025, so confirm your figure on the DTMO BAH calculator.
Wheatland
The tiny ranch town closest to the gate, with the Wheatland School District (also runs the two on-base elementaries) and Wheatland Union High; modest rents, newer subdivisions on the east side, and the shortest commute on base.
Plumas Lake
The default choice for military families — planned subdivisions off Highway 70 with new-build three- and four-bedroom homes, its own Plumas Lake Elementary School District, and Wheatland Union High for teens; commutes run up Highway 70 and North Beale Road.
Yuba City / Marysville
The twin-city hub across the Feather River with the hospital, the big-box shopping, and the most restaurants; older housing stock and mixed schools in Marysville JUSD and Yuba City USD, but the best value per square foot.
Lincoln / Roseville
Placer County suburbia with top-rated Western Placer, Rocklin, and Roseville schools, big master-planned neighborhoods, and $600K-plus price tags; a real reverse commute up Highway 65 that many officers and dual-income families accept.
Grass Valley / Nevada City
Gold Rush foothill towns at 2,500 feet with pines, cooler summers, Victorian downtowns, and Nevada Joint Union High; the drive in via Highway 20 and the Grass Valley Gate is scenic but that gate only opens for weekday rush windows.
Schools & childcare
- Two K-5 schools sit on base within walking distance of housing: Lone Tree Elementary and Wheatland Charter Academy, both part of the Wheatland School District. Middle and high school students in base housing bus to Wheatland; Wheatland Union High School is the zoned high school.
- Off base, families choose among Wheatland School District, Plumas Lake Elementary School District, Marysville Joint Unified, Yuba City Unified, and the Placer County districts (Western Placer, Rocklin, Roseville). California's Purple Star designation is growing; the School Liaison keeps the current list and handles Interstate Compact (MIC3) issues.
- School Liaison Program: 530-634-3539, Child and Youth Resource Center, Bldg 3308, 5190 Camp Beale Hwy. Email 9FSS.CYES.SLO@us.af.mil. Contact them before you arrive with transcripts and IEPs in hand.
- Childcare: the base Child Development Center takes infants through pre-K and fills fast, so register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders. Family Child Care homes in base housing and the School Age Program at the youth center are the overflow options.
Healthcare
- 9th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital — no emergency room and no inpatient beds. Main line 530-634-2941, open Monday-Friday 0730-1630 (closed until 1300 the first Wednesday of each month for training). Book appointments through the clinic line or the MHS GENESIS patient portal; the TRICARE Nurse Advice Line is 1-800-874-2273 after hours.
- For emergencies call 911 or drive to Adventist Health and Rideout in Marysville, the region's full-service hospital with a 24-hour ER, roughly 20 minutes from the main gate. Sacramento's UC Davis Medical Center is the Level I trauma center about an hour south.
- Beale is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. TDY travelers on Prime should use the clinic for urgent needs or call the Nurse Advice Line to keep referrals clean.
On base
- Commissary
Full commissary on base off Warren Shingle Road; closed Mondays at many DeCA stores, so check hours before a Monday grocery run
- Exchange
Main Exchange with Military Clothing, a food court, and gas station; the nearest big-box shopping is Yuba City
- Fitness
Harris Fitness Center (main gym) and the smaller Omni Fitness Center; Beale Lanes bowling and Outdoor Recreation rent boats, bikes, and camping gear
- Dining
Contrails dining facility for meal-card and TDY members; Coyote Pub and Grill inside the Recce Point Club (530-634-4948); Spare Time Grill at the bowling center
- MWR
Recce Point Club, Community Center, Hub Zemke Library, Auto Hobby Center, Venture Park, and ITT for Tahoe and Bay Area tickets; the Coyote Run golf course closed in 2020
- History
Camp Beale opened in 1942 for armored and infantry training; the SR-71 Blackbird flew from here 1966-1990 and the U-2 since 1976
Off duty

Spenceville Wildlife Area
An 11,900-acre reserve butting up against the base's east side, with a 5.3-mile loop past two waterfalls (Fairy Falls) that hikers, mountain bikers, and horses share. Go in spring for wildflowers and running water; it is 15 minutes from the Wheatland Gate.

Sutter Buttes
The 'smallest mountain range in the world' rises 2,000 feet out of the flat valley floor west of Yuba City. Access is mostly private, so book a guided hike with the Middle Mountain Foundation (October-May) or drive the 39-mile loop around the buttes at sunset.

South Yuba River State Park
Swimming holes, granite slabs, and the 1862 Bridgeport covered bridge, the longest single-span covered bridge in the country, about 35 minutes northeast via Highway 20. Summer water is cold and the current is real; go early to beat the crowds.

Nevada City and Grass Valley
Gold Rush towns 40 minutes up Highway 20 with Victorian main streets, breweries, and Empire Mine State Historic Park, where you can walk the shaft of one of California's richest hard-rock mines. Nevada City's Victorian Christmas in December is worth the trip.

Sacramento
About an hour south: Old Sacramento's California State Railroad Museum, the Capitol, Golden 1 Center for Kings games, and the midtown restaurant scene. SMF airport runs are the usual excuse; leave time on Highway 70 at rush hour.
Official site ↗Lake Tahoe
Two and a half hours east on I-80, with Squaw/Palisades, Northstar, and Sugar Bowl skiing in winter and beaches at Kings Beach and Sand Harbor in summer. ITT sells discounted lift tickets; carry chains November through April.
Official site ↗Marysville's Bok Kai Temple and Ellis Lake
The oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California anchors the Bok Kai Festival and parade each spring, and Ellis Lake downtown hosts the July 4 celebration and hydroplane regatta. Both are 20 minutes from the gate.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Gate hours at Beale have changed at least three times since 2025, and the main Schneider Gate has been closed for stretches. Screenshot the current hours from beale.af.mil before a night or weekend arrival, and default to the Vassar Lake Gate, which both the base and housing office list as 24/7.
- 02Yuba County is standard-rate per diem: $110 lodging in FY2026. Chain hotels in Marysville and Yuba City often quote above that, so lock in lodging early or ask for the government rate by name; a crashpad priced inside the rate saves you the out-of-pocket fight.
- 03Summer heat is no joke — 100°F-plus for weeks, and the base is open ranchland with little shade. Hydrate before PT, park in the shade, and keep a sunshade in the rental.
- 04Late summer and fall are fire season. Wildfire smoke from the Sierra can push air quality into the unhealthy range for days; pack an N95 if you have asthma and check AirNow before outdoor runs.
- 05Winter tule fog on Highway 70 and 99 is the region's real driving hazard. Slow down, use low beams, and add 15 minutes to any early-morning commute from Plumas Lake or Marysville from December through February.
- 06The Gold Country Inn's standard rooms are quad-style suites with a shared kitchen and living room; if you want privacy for a long TDY, ask about availability early or plan on a non-availability number and a crashpad.
- 07Housing waitlists for Balfour Beatty homes can run months for popular floor plans. Get on the list the day you have orders, and look at Plumas Lake and Wheatland rentals as the backup — both are inside a 25-minute commute.
- 08The base is 15 miles from the nearest grocery store outside the commissary and 45 minutes from a real airport. Bring a car (or rent one), stock the crashpad kitchen on day one, and do your SMF runs outside the Highway 70 rush.
