Overview
Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is the home of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the busiest Marine aviation installation on the West Coast. Marine Aircraft Group 11 flies F-35C and F-35B Lightning IIs, F/A-18 Hornets, and KC-130J tankers, Marine Aircraft Group 16 flies MV-22B Ospreys and CH-53E Super Stallions with the CH-53K arriving, and Marine Air Control Group 38 runs the command and control side. About 11,000 active-duty Marines and Sailors work here, and the constant churn of detachments, transition training, wing inspections, and cross-flow with the Navy bases around San Diego Bay means somebody is always arriving on temporary orders.
The base sits in the geographic center of San Diego between I-15 and I-805, with Mira Mesa's 80,000 residents on its north fence and Kearny Mesa's office parks to the south. The weather is the easy part: highs in the mid 60s in winter and low 80s in late summer, about 10 inches of rain concentrated November through March, and a marine layer that keeps mornings gray in May and June. What matters to a TDY traveler is cost and traffic. San Diego rents and hotel rates are among the highest of any Marine Corps installation, the I-15 and I-805 corridors jam from about 0630 to 0900 and 1530 to 1830, and the Miramar Inn fills fast, so lining up lodging early is the difference between a smooth trip and a long commute.
Weather
Miramar's own weather station records normal highs from about 66 F in January to 81 F in August, with lows from the mid 40s in winter to the low 60s in summer. Annual rainfall is only about 10.6 inches and more than 75 percent of it falls November through March, while summer months see essentially none. May Gray and June Gloom bring a low marine layer that burns off by midday, and Santa Ana wind events in fall and early winter push inland temperatures into the 90s with very low humidity and elevated fire danger.
Best months
September through November and March through May
Tough months
Late May through June for the persistent morning overcast that delays flying, and Santa Ana periods in October and November when heat and wildfire smoke can disrupt the whole county
Getting there
- Fly into San Diego International (SAN), about 17 miles and 20 to 30 minutes south of the base; take I-5 north to CA-163 north to I-15 north and exit Miramar Way for the Main Gate. Rent a car; there is no direct transit to the gates.
- The Main (East) Gate on Miramar Way at I-15 is the only gate open 24/7 and is the correct gate for first-time arrivals, visitors, and commercial deliveries.
- The North Gate on Miramar Road (about 4 miles east of I-805 via La Jolla Village Drive) is the housing and Inn-side gate, open Monday through Friday 0600 to 2200 with weekend and holiday hours that vary; some sources list it as 24/7, so confirm current hours on miramar.marines.mil.
- The West Gate on Miramar Road nearest I-805 opens only in limited weekday commute windows, roughly 0600 to 0800 and 1600 to 1800 when it operates, and is closed on holidays with no commercial traffic.
- The Visitor and Registration Center is Building 6200 at the Main (East) Gate, open weekdays 0730 to 1615, and handles visitor passes, DBIDS enrollment, and vehicle registration; bring a valid ID, driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. Call (858) 307-1463 with questions.
- Expect heavy traffic on I-15, I-805, and Miramar Road from about 0630 to 0900 and 1530 to 1830; the base encourages military personnel to use the North and West Gates during commuting hours to spread the load.

The crashpad option
Miramar TDYs tend to run long, whether that is a squadron detachment, a transition course, or a wing staff augment, and a furnished crashpad at or under the San Diego rate gives you a kitchen, parking, and a consistent receipt instead of a different hotel every two weeks. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property near MCAS Miramar yet, but we are expanding into San Diego; if you are a traveler who needs a place or a homeowner in Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Kearny Mesa, or University City with a room or unit to offer, reach out and we will connect you.
MCAS Miramar crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Family housing at MCAS Miramar is privatized under Liberty Military Housing (formerly Lincoln Military Housing), with the housing office on base at 45418 Howe Road and neighborhoods spread across the Miramar and Murphy Canyon areas that are shared with the other San Diego installations.
- Wait lists for family housing are long and commonly quoted at 12 to 24 months depending on rank and bedroom count, so most incoming families rent off base.
- The San Diego rental market is expensive and competitive: two-bedroom apartments in Mira Mesa and Kearny Mesa typically list in the high $2,000s to low $3,000s per month, while single-family homes in Scripps Ranch and Poway run well above that.
- Start searching 60 to 90 days out, expect application fees and quick decisions, and lean on the housing office and the Military Housing Office referral list for landlords who accept the military clause.
BAH 2026
| Grade | With dependents | Without dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-5 | $3,975 | $3,147 |
| O-3 | $4,518 | $4,248 |
- MCAS Miramar is in the San Diego MHA (CA038), the same housing area as Naval Base San Diego, North Island, and MCRD.
- The 2026 BAH rates listed for CA038 are $3,975 with dependents and $3,147 without for an E-5, and $4,518 with dependents and $4,248 without for an O-3, up about 0.2 percent from 2025.
- Confirm your exact rate on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.

Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Book the Miramar Inn the day your orders drop; TAD travelers are Priority 1 but rooms still vanish around air show week, Marine Corps Ball season in November, and June through August PCS moves.
- 02If you are told the Inn is full, get the Statement of Non-Availability in writing before you book anything off base or DTS will bounce your lodging claim.
- 03Use the North Gate on Miramar Road if you are staying in Mira Mesa or UTC; it puts you near the Inn, housing, and the MCX without the I-15 Miramar Way backup.
- 04Rush hour on I-15 and I-805 is real: southbound from Scripps Ranch or Poway takes twice as long from 0700 to 0830, so shift your flight-line day earlier or later if your unit allows.
- 05June through August per diem jumps to $237, which is exactly when San Diego hotels raise rates the most; a crashpad locked at a fixed price is the one lodging cost that will not surprise you.
- 06Mornings in May and June are gray and cool under the marine layer even when the forecast says sunny; pack a light jacket for early launches and it will burn off by lunch.
- 07Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa, five minutes south, has the best Korean barbecue, ramen, and boba in the city, and Mira Mesa Boulevard's Filipino turo-turo spots are the cheapest full meals near the base.
- 08Active-duty ID gets you free admission to the USS Midway and steep discounts at the Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld through ITT; check ITT before you buy anything at the gate.
