Overview

March Air Reserve Base is one of the oldest airfields the U.S. military still operates, opened in 1918 and flown continuously ever since. Today it is headquarters for Air Force Reserve Command's Fourth Air Force and home of the 452nd Air Mobility Wing, which operates nine C-17 Globemaster IIIs and twelve KC-135R Stratotankers. The 163rd Attack Wing of the California Air National Guard flies MQ-9 Reapers from the same field, and Army Reserve brigades, a Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center, and the Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations Center round out a Team March population of more than 8,000 assigned personnel. Because so much of that force is Reserve and Guard, the base runs on a UTA rhythm: quiet midweek, packed on drill weekends.

The base sits in the Inland Empire between Riverside, Moreno Valley, and Perris, about 24 miles from Ontario International Airport and 70-plus miles from Los Angeles. Expect hot, dry summers with highs in the mid-90s, mild winters in the 60s, and roughly 10 inches of rain a year, almost all of it between December and March. For a TDY traveler the things that matter are simple: a car is mandatory, the Cactus Avenue gate is your landmark, the per diem rate changes with the season, and the base exchange closed in 2024, so plan on shopping in town.

Weather

Riverside averages a July high of 94°F and an August high of 95°F, with lows in the low 60s; January highs run about 68°F with lows near 43°F. Annual precipitation is only about 10 inches, concentrated in winter, and the Inland Empire can string together weeks of triple-digit afternoons in late summer.

Best months

March through May and October through November

Tough months

July through September for heat and poor air quality; October and November also bring Santa Ana wind events and wildfire smoke

02

Getting there

  • Fly into Ontario International (ONT), about 24 miles and 30 minutes away via CA-60 east to I-215 south; take the Cactus Avenue exit and follow Cactus east to the Main Gate. LAX is 75-plus miles and can easily take two hours in traffic, so only use it if the fare difference is dramatic. You need a rental car here; there is no practical way to do this TDY without one.
  • The Main Gate on Cactus Avenue is the 24-hour gate and the visitor entrance. The Riverside Gate and Meyer Gate have been listed as 0600-1600 daily, but Reserve bases adjust gate schedules around UTAs and staffing, so confirm current hours with 452nd Security Forces or the base's official site before you plan on a side gate.
  • The Visitor Control Center is in Building 2370 on Graeber Street just inside the Main Gate, reachable at 951-655-3790. Published hours are Monday through Friday and UTA Saturdays, 0700-1600; bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance, and have your sponsor or orders ready if you do not hold a CAC.
  • I-215 backs up hard in both directions during the weekday commute, and on UTA weekends the Cactus Avenue gate line can stretch for a while on Saturday morning. Give yourself 15 extra minutes on drill weekends, and watch base social media in the fall when Santa Ana winds and wildfire closures can affect the 60 and the 215.

  • The front desk is staffed roughly 0600 to midnight daily (the FSS page lists 6:00 AM-midnight; some directories list 0800-2200, so confirm), and the base operator at 951-655-1110 can help after hours.
  • It is a big property, 435 rooms across nine Spanish Mission-style buildings, with pet-friendly rooms and kennels available.
  • Availability is the catch: rooms are generally open Sunday through Thursday but fill with drilling reservists on UTA weekends.
  • If the Inn cannot lodge you, get the non-availability number before booking commercially.

The crashpad option

We're expanding at March ARB. If you are coming in on Reserve orders, a Fourth Air Force staff tour, or a 163rd drill period, send us your dates and we will match you with a furnished room in Moreno Valley or Riverside priced inside the Riverside County rate with a DTS-ready receipt.

NeighborhoodCommute

Moreno Valley

The closest city to the gate, with newer tract homes near Lake Perris and Rancho Belago, older stock south of the 60, Moreno Valley and Val Verde schools, and the lowest home prices in the immediate area.

Commute: ~10 min

Riverside (Orangecrest, Mission Grove, Canyon Crest)

Established neighborhoods on the south and east side of the city with strong Riverside Unified schools, UC Riverside nearby, and easy access to the Mission Inn downtown scene; expect to pay more than Moreno Valley.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Perris and Menifee

Newer master-planned communities straight down I-215 with big garages, HOA pools, and prices around $560,000-$570,000; Menifee has the newer schools and shopping, and Kaiser and other TRICARE providers are nearby.

Commute: ~15-25 min

Temecula and Murrieta

Where a lot of families end up for the schools, wine country, and a more suburban feel, at the cost of a long I-215 commute that can stretch past an hour in traffic.

Commute: ~40-60 min

Redlands and Loma Linda

North of the base with historic homes, a college-town feel, and Loma Linda University Medical Center, worth a look if you want mature trees and are willing to fight the 60 and 215 twice a day.

Commute: ~25-35 min
05

Schools & childcare

  • No on-base schools and no base housing, so school choice follows where you rent or buy. The base itself sits in the Val Verde Unified School District, and most Moreno Valley addresses fall into either Val Verde USD or Moreno Valley USD.
  • Riverside Unified serves the city of Riverside, Perris Union High and Perris Elementary cover Perris, and Menifee Union and Temecula Valley Unified serve the communities farther south; check each district's boundary tool with your exact address before signing a lease.
  • School liaison support runs through the Military & Family Readiness Center at 951-655-5350; ask for the School Liaison when you call, and expect newcomer orientation to be folded into the UTA Saturday newcomers briefing.
  • There is a Child Development Center on base and the FSS advertises free child care programs for eligible reservists; for full-time care, register early on MilitaryChildCare.com because Inland Empire waitlists are long, and many families use off-base providers in Moreno Valley and Riverside.
06

Healthcare

  • March ARB has no military treatment facility for routine care. The 452nd Medical Squadron and the aeromedical evacuation squadron support deployment readiness and flight medicine for assigned members, not family or sick-call care, so TDY members and families use TRICARE network providers in town.
  • For emergencies, Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley (951-486-4000) is about 10 minutes from the gate and is the region's Level I trauma center; Kaiser Permanente Riverside and Loma Linda University Medical Center are other major hospitals within 30 minutes.
  • TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance; customer service 1-844-866-9378, tricare.triwest.com.

Insider tips

  1. 01Book the March Inn or your crashpad around the UTA calendar. The Inn is usually wide open Sunday through Thursday and packed on drill weekends, so if your orders straddle a UTA, lock in lodging the day you get them.
  2. 02Watch the per diem season. Riverside County drops from $186 to $141 a night on June 1, so a TDY that starts in May and runs into summer needs to be priced against the lower rate for the later nights.
  3. 03There is no BX. The March exchange closed in August 2024, so pack anything you would normally grab at the shoppette and use the commissary, ShopMyExchange.com, or the Target and Costco along Day Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Moreno Valley.
  4. 04Plan meals. There is no full-time dining facility; the Hap Arnold Club and its grill cover lunch on duty days, and a crashpad kitchen pays for itself fast on a 30-day tour.
  5. 05Heat is the real hazard. Late-summer afternoons hit 100-plus regularly, and the base sits in one of the worst air-quality basins in the country when fires burn. Run or hike early, hydrate on the flightline, and check air quality before outdoor PT.
  6. 06Santa Ana season runs October through December. Downed lines, freeway closures, and smoke on the 60 and 215 are normal, and base social media is the fastest source for gate changes.
  7. 07Do not underestimate the 215. A 15-mile drive from Menifee can take 45 minutes at 0700, and Temecula commuters routinely budget an hour or more each way. Test-drive the commute before signing a lease south of Perris.
  8. 08Register for childcare and school records early. With no base housing and no on-base schools, you are competing with the general Inland Empire population; MilitaryChildCare.com and each district's transfer window matter more here than at an active-duty base.

FAQ

Can I stay off base at March ARB and get reimbursed?
Yes, when the March Inn is full. Call 951-655-5241 or check af.dodlodging.net; if there is no room you receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 Riverside County rate of $186 a night October through May or $141 June through September, plus $86 M&IE. A crashpad priced inside that rate reimburses through DTS with a normal lodging receipt.
Which gate do I use and what do I need to get on base?
Use the Main Gate on Cactus Avenue off I-215; it is the 24-hour gate and the visitor entrance. CAC holders drive straight through. Everyone else stops at the Visitor Control Center in Building 2370 on Graeber Street (951-655-3790) with a REAL ID driver's license, registration, insurance, and orders or a sponsor. Side gates keep limited daytime hours that change with staffing, so confirm before relying on them.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. March ARB has no military treatment facility for routine or emergency care; the medical squadron handles readiness and flight medicine for assigned members only. For emergencies go to Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley, about 10 minutes from the gate, and use TRICARE West (TriWest) network providers for everything else.
Where do families live near March ARB?
There is no base housing, so families spread out. Moreno Valley is closest and most affordable, south and east Riverside neighborhoods like Orangecrest and Canyon Crest offer strong schools and a 15-to-20-minute drive, Perris and Menifee have newer master-planned homes down I-215, and Temecula draws families willing to commute 45 minutes or more for its schools and lifestyle.
