Overview
Buckley SFB is where the nation's missile-warning satellites are flown. Space Base Delta 2 hosts Mission Delta 4, whose squadrons operate the Defense Support Program and SBIRS constellations from under the base's landmark radomes, alongside the 140th Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard (F-16Cs), the Aerospace Data Facility-Colorado, the Air Reserve Personnel Center, a Navy Reserve center, and an Army Aviation Support Facility. The delta supports about 3,500 active-duty members from every service, 4,000 Guard and Reserve personnel, 2,400 civilians, and 2,500 contractors, with 117 tenant units in all — so TDY traffic is a steady, joint-service flow rather than a big training pipeline.
The base sits on the eastern edge of Aurora, Colorado's third-largest city, at 5,663 feet on the high plains with the Front Range on the western horizon. Expect a semi-arid climate: about 300 sunny days a year, dry air that dehydrates you fast, July highs near 91°F, December highs around 45°F with lows near 17°F, and roughly four feet of snow spread across October through April. Denver International Airport is 12 miles north, which makes Buckley one of the easiest bases in the country to fly into — and Denver's rental-car and hotel prices are why the per diem rate is one of the highest in the region.
Weather
Denver averages about 300 sunny days, roughly 15 inches of precipitation, and around 49 inches of snow a year, with mid-July highs near 91°F and late-December highs around 45°F and lows near 17°F. Big temperature swings in a single day are normal, and snow can fall as early as October and as late as May.
Best months
September–October and May–June
Tough months
December–March for snow and ice on 6th Ave and I-70; late spring and summer afternoons for hail and severe thunderstorms that can dent a rental car
Getting there
- Fly into Denver International (DEN), about 12 miles and 20 minutes north of the base via E-470 or Peña Blvd to I-70. DEN is a major hub with nonstop flights from nearly everywhere; rental cars are at a consolidated facility a shuttle ride from the terminal, so budget an extra 30 minutes. A car is essential — there is no practical transit to the gates.
- The Mississippi Gate (E. Mississippi Ave at Aspen St) is the only 24/7 gate. The 6th Ave Gate runs limited weekday hours (sources list a 5 or 6 a.m. opening and 6 p.m. close, with shorter weekend hours), and the Telluride Gate has been closed until further notice. Confirm on the official Buckley gate-hours fact sheet before a late arrival.
- The Visitor Control Center is open 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday–Friday, walk-in only, at 720-847-9381. Sources differ on whether it sits at the Mississippi Gate or the 6th Ave Gate (372 N. Aspen St, Bldg 41), so call ahead. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport; visitors without a CAC need a sponsor.
- Traffic on I-225 and I-70 backs up hard from 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m., and E-470 is a cashless toll road that bills the rental-car company (and you) by plate. Winter storms can close 6th Ave and Mississippi Ave for hours — leave early and check base social media for delayed-reporting calls.

The crashpad option
The Timberline is our Buckley home: a 2 bed / 3 bath, 1,700 sq ft house in Denver about 15–25 minutes from the gates, with a full kitchen, laundry, and fast Wi-Fi, priced inside the $165–$215 Denver/Aurora rate with DTS-ready receipts. Send us your dates and we'll confirm availability the same day.
Buckley SFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is privatized; Military OneSource lists Hunt as the owner-operator (some older guides say Balfour Beatty — confirm with the office).
- The Military Housing Office is at 17300 E.
- Keystone Blvd, Buckley SFB, CO 80011, 720-847-5692, open 6 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday–Friday; you must check in with the MHO before signing any off-base lease.
- Off base, Aurora's median home price was about $458,000 and average apartment rent about $2,000 a month in 2025; Denver ran roughly $640,000 and $1,974.
- Buying is common here because BAH is high and the metro keeps growing, but inventory near the base moves fast in summer.
BAH 2026
- Buckley is in the Denver MHA (CO045).
- Per published 2026 tables, an E-5 draws approximately $2,841 with dependents / $2,148 without, and an O-3 approximately $3,207 with dependents / $2,979 without — the highest BAH of any Space Force base.
- Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
East Aurora (Murphy Creek, Tallyn's Reach, Southshore)
Newer master-planned subdivisions with parks, trails, and Cherry Creek or Aurora schools, $500–650K homes, and the shortest drive to the Mississippi Gate via E-470.
Central Park (Denver)
Walkable, family-heavy former Stapleton airport redevelopment with pools, a town center, and DPS schools; pricey but a straight shot east on I-70 or 6th Ave.
Lowry (Denver)
The old Lowry AFB turned into tree-lined neighborhoods, a great fitness center and library, and easy access to Cherry Creek shopping; rentals and townhomes are plentiful.
Green Valley Ranch / Gateway (Denver)
Affordable newer homes and apartments close to DIA and E-470, popular with airline and base families who want a quick commute both directions.
Parker / Centennial
Suburban Douglas County and Cherry Creek districts with top-rated schools, big-box convenience, and a longer haul north on E-470 or Parker Rd.
Schools & childcare
- No DoDEA schools on base. Base housing is zoned to Aurora Public Schools: Edna and John W. Mosley P-8, Murphy Creek P-8, Vista PEAK P-20 Campus, and Gateway High School. APS maintains a dedicated Buckley families page with Interstate Compact enrollment help.
- Most off-base families choose among Aurora Public Schools, Cherry Creek Schools (south Aurora and Centennial), Denver Public Schools (Central Park, Lowry, Green Valley Ranch), and Douglas County (Parker). Colorado is an Interstate Compact state; ask the district about Purple Star-designated campuses.
- School Liaison Program: 720-847-6694 (duty cell 720-661-7411), Youth Center Bldg 350, 460FSS.FSY.SchoolLiaison@us.af.mil, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–4 p.m. Contact them before you pick a neighborhood — they know which schools have room.
- Childcare runs through the A-Basin Child Development Center (Bldg 351) and Family Child Care homes. Waitlists are long in the Denver metro, so request care on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders.
Healthcare
- 460th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital: Bldg 600 (MDG North, 275 S. Aspen St) and Bldg 392 (MDG South, 18230 E. Silvercreek St). Appointment line 720-847-9355; hours 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Wednesday. No emergency room or urgent care.
- For emergencies call 911 or go to UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital or Children's Hospital Colorado on the Anschutz Medical Campus (about 15 minutes west on Colfax), or The Medical Center of Aurora (about 15 minutes southwest). Urgent-care clinics line E. Colfax and S. Parker Rd.
- TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance since January 1, 2025. Update DEERS and your PCM on arrival; TDY travelers use the TRICARE Nurse Advice Line or a network urgent care.

Off duty

Cherry Creek State Park
Ten minutes southwest of the gate, an 880-acre reservoir with paddleboarding, a swim beach, bike paths, and a model-airplane field. Bring your military pass; the park is the quickest sunset reset in the metro.

Downtown Denver and the ballparks
Coors Field (Rockies), Ball Arena (Nuggets, Avalanche), and Empower Field (Broncos) are 25–30 minutes west; ITT sells discounted tickets. Park at a light-rail station on I-225 and ride in on game nights.
Wikipedia ↗Skiing on I-70
Loveland is the closest big mountain at about 75 minutes; Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper are 1.5–2 hours. Buy the discounted military Epic or Ikon pass through ITT, and leave before 6 a.m. on weekends or you will sit in the tunnel line.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Estes Park is about 90 minutes northwest. Trail Ridge Road (open roughly late May–October) tops out above 12,000 feet; timed-entry permits are required in summer, so book on recreation.gov before you go.
Official site ↗Stanley Marketplace and Anschutz
A converted aviation hangar 15 minutes west on Montview with 50 local shops and restaurants — the best casual dinner spot near base. Nearby Lowry has the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, worth a rainy afternoon.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Altitude is real at 5,663 feet: drink twice the water you think you need for the first two days, go easy on alcohol, and pack lip balm and lotion — the dry air will get you.
- 02The Mississippi Gate is your only 24/7 option. If you land at DEN after 6 p.m., set your GPS for E. Mississippi Ave and Aspen St, not 6th Ave.
- 03Call the Rocky Mountain Lodge (720-847-5899) as soon as you have orders and get the non-availability number in writing before you book off base — Guard drill weekends and exercise cycles fill it fast.
- 04Denver per diem jumps from $165 to $215 on April 1; if your TDY straddles the change, your DTS voucher should reflect both rates.
- 05E-470 is cashless tolling by license plate. Rental companies add a daily convenience fee on top of the toll, so take I-70 and I-225 if you have the time.
- 06Afternoon summer thunderstorms bring hail with no warning — park under cover when you can and don't leave the car on the flightline apron side of the lot.
- 07Snow days are handled by base social media and the delayed-reporting hotline; a 6-inch storm can make the 15-minute drive an hour. Keep an ice scraper and a blanket in the car November through April.
- 08PCS families: put your name on the Hunt housing waitlist and the CDC waitlist the day you get orders; both run months long, and the MHO must clear you before you sign any off-base lease.
