Overview
Schriever is where the Space Force actually flies satellites. Space Base Delta 1 hosts the installation, and inside the Restricted Area the 2nd Navigation Warfare Squadron (the old 2 SOPS) operates the GPS constellation from Building 400 while Space Delta 8 runs military satellite communications, Space Delta 9 handles orbital warfare, and Joint Task Force–Space Defense staffs the National Space Defense Center. Add Space Delta 6, the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center, an NRO operations squadron, and the Reserve's 310th Space Wing, and you get more than 8,100 people commanding well over 170 satellites on around-the-clock crew schedules. Space Delta 15 is standing up here too, with about 250 positions expected by summer 2027.
The base sits on the high plains roughly 12 miles east of Colorado Springs at about 6,200 feet, and that is the whole story for a TDY traveler: it is windy, it is sunny, the weather changes fast, and there is nothing to eat or sleep in within ten miles of the gate. You will drive CO-94 every day, you will lodge in town, and you will want a kitchen. Once you settle in, though, Colorado Springs is one of the best duty stations in the country to be stuck at for a few weeks.
Weather
Colorado Springs averages a 43°F high and 18°F low in January and mid-80s highs with cool 55°F nights in July, with about 32 inches of snow a year spread across December through March and roughly 16 inches of total precipitation. Out at Schriever the wind is stronger and the snow drifts across CO-94, so a sunny forecast in town does not mean an easy drive to the gate.
Best months
September through October and late April through June — dry, sunny, and mild
Tough months
December through March for blowing snow and icy CO-94, plus July and August afternoons for hail and lightning that shut down outdoor training
Getting there
- Fly into Colorado Springs Airport (COS), about 25 minutes from the gate: leave the airport on Powers Boulevard north, right on Platte Avenue, right on Highway 94 east for about 10 miles, then right on Enoch Road about 2 miles to the north gate. Denver International (DEN) is roughly two hours north and often cheaper, but budget for I-25 traffic. Rent a car — there is no shuttle, no rideshare depth on the plains, and no walking to anything from the base.
- Two gates: the North Gate on Enoch Road is normally 24/7 and houses the Visitor Control Center; the West Gate on Irwin Avenue, just south of CO-94, is normally 0600–1900 Monday–Friday and is the closer one from Colorado Springs. In 2026 the Enoch Road gate is under construction, most inbound traffic has shifted to the West Gate, and during the 0500–0900 rush all three West Gate lanes run inbound only — confirm the current configuration on the Peterson–Schriever site or 50 FSS social media before your first drive.
- Visitor Control Center: 1560 Enoch Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80930, 719-567-5620, open Monday–Thursday 0700–1600 and Friday 0700–1400. Anyone without a DoD ID needs a sponsor with base access and a REAL ID-compliant license, registration, and insurance; family members and contractors should get passes arranged before arrival because the VCC closes early on Fridays.
- Everyone arrives between 0500 and 0900 along the same two-lane stretch of CO-94, so expect a slow queue at the West Gate on crew-change mornings. When snow is forecast, watch for delayed-reporting or mission-essential-only calls from Space Base Delta 1 — CO-94 and Enoch Road drift shut before the city streets do.

Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.

The crashpad option
We're expanding at Schriever SFB. Send us your TDY dates and we'll match you with a furnished Colorado Springs crashpad priced inside the $123 rate (and the $168 summer rate) with DTS-ready receipts, a real kitchen, and a garage for the winter mornings.
Schriever SFB crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- On-base family housing is privatized through Tierra Vista Communities — roughly 250 three- and four-bedroom homes in the Enoch Road neighborhood, with a Welcome Center at 300 Hartinger Circle (888-875-8009, Monday–Friday 0800–1700) and the Military Housing Office at 719-567-2884.
- Off base, 2026 rent reports disagree widely: one-bedrooms run roughly $1,100–$1,500 and two-bedrooms about $1,300–$1,900 depending on the source, with houses in Falcon and the east side commonly $2,200 and up.
- Median home prices sit somewhere between $450,000 and $540,000 in 2026 — strong VA-loan territory, and the east side is where new construction lives.
BAH 2026
- Schriever falls in the Colorado Springs MHA (CO046).
- Published 2026 tables show approximately $2,358 for an E-5 with dependents ($1,860 without) and about $2,595 for an O-3 with dependents ($2,397 without) — confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing anything.
Falcon / Peyton
Where most Schriever families land: newer subdivisions and a few acres of horse property on the plains, Falcon District 49 schools with military transition consultants, and a back-road commute down Curtis Road that skips town entirely.
Banning Lewis Ranch / Stetson Hills
New-build east Colorado Springs with parks, pools, and the full Powers Boulevard shopping strip, zoned to District 49 with prices in the mid-$400s to $500s, and a straight shot out CO-94 to the gate.
Ellicott
The tiny ranch town right outside the gate — well water, big lots, Purple Star-designated Ellicott Elementary in District 22, and almost nothing to buy or rent, so grab it if it appears.
Cimarron Hills / Powers corridor
Older, more affordable homes and apartments between Peterson and the airport, District 49 and District 11 schools, and the commissary, Exchange, and Pikes Peak Lodge five minutes away.
Fountain / Security-Widefield
South-side value with Fort Carson neighbors and Fountain-Fort Carson District 8 schools; you save on rent but pay in a Marksheffel-to-CO-94 commute that gets long when it snows.
Schools & childcare
- No schools on Schriever. Tierra Vista housing and the Ellicott area are zoned to Ellicott School District 22, whose Ellicott Elementary holds a Purple Star designation for military-connected students.
- Most families in town use Falcon School District 49 (Falcon, Peyton, Banning Lewis Ranch, east Colorado Springs), known for its STEM and choice programs and Military Student Transition Consultants; Colorado Springs District 11 and Fountain-Fort Carson District 8 cover the older east side and the south. Colorado Military Academy, a Purple Star charter near Peterson, is a popular option too.
- School Liaison Program: reach the Schriever office through the Military & Family Readiness Center at 101 Falcon Parkway, 719-567-3920, or the Peterson–Schriever School Liaison page for enrollment help and district comparisons.
- Childcare: Schriever has one Child Development Center with infant through preschool care plus school-age programs; request care through MilitaryChildCare.com the day you have orders, because Colorado Springs waitlists run months and the Peterson CDC is the overflow.
Healthcare
- Schriever Clinic, part of the 21st Medical Group (Space Base Delta 1), is an outpatient clinic only — primary care and flight medicine, no emergency room. Appointment line 719-524-CARE (2273); hours Monday–Thursday 0730–1630 and Friday 0730–1130, with a 24-hour Nurse Advice Line at the same number, option 3. The larger Peterson SFB clinic at 559 Vincent Street handles pharmacy, labs, and specialty referrals.
- Emergencies go to a civilian ER — UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central downtown or Memorial North on the north side are the trauma centers, and Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson serves TRICARE beneficiaries on the south side. Call 911 from the plains; response times east of Marksheffel are real.
- TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.
On base
- Commissary
- None at Schriever — use the Peterson SFB Commissary, 1040 E.
- Stewart Avenue, roughly 15 minutes west on CO-94
- Exchange
- Schriever has only a shoppette/Express (719-567-3915) for fuel and snacks; the full Peterson Exchange is at 1030 E.
- Stewart Avenue
- Fitness
Main Fitness Center, Building 120 on Falcon Parkway, 719-567-6628 — staffed Monday–Friday 0500–1930, with 24/7 unstaffed access after a CAC registration and short briefing
- Dining
Satellite Dish Dining Facility inside the Restricted Area (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a 2300–0100 midnight meal daily; open to all base employees for dinner, midnight, and weekends) plus food trucks Monday–Friday 1030–1300 — pack lunch otherwise
- MWR
50th Force Support Squadron (50fss.com) runs fitness, the CDC, the M&FRC, and Outdoor Recreation gear and ticket programs; the big MWR menu — bowling, auto hobby, Peterson Club — is at Peterson
- Newcomers
Military & Family Readiness Center, 101 Falcon Parkway, 719-567-3920 — Monday–Wednesday and Friday 0800–1600, Thursday 0900–1600, for in-processing, relocation, and spouse employment help
Off duty

Garden of the Gods
The red sandstone fins on the west side of Colorado Springs are free, open dawn to dusk, and about 40 minutes from the gate. Park at the visitor center on 30th Street and walk the paved Perkins Central Garden loop, or come at sunrise when the rocks light up and the crowds are asleep.

Pikes Peak
You can drive the 19-mile Pikes Peak Highway to the 14,115-foot summit (timed-entry reservation in summer), ride the cog railway from Manitou Springs, or hike Barr Trail if you have a full day and lungs. Bring a jacket — it can be 40 degrees colder up top than in town.

Manitou Springs and the Incline
The Manitou Incline climbs 2,000 feet in under a mile on old railway ties; free reservations are required and the descent on Barr Trail saves your knees. Afterward, soak at SunWater Spa or grab a green chile burger on Manitou Avenue, about 45 minutes from base.

Paint Mines Interpretive Park
The insider pick — 25 minutes northeast of the gate near Calhan, a maze of pastel hoodoos and badlands that most Springs residents have never seen. Go late afternoon for the color, stay off the formations, and bring water; there is no shade.

Downtown and the Olympic Museum
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum anchors a revitalized downtown 30 minutes west, with Tejon Street breweries, Weidner Field soccer, and the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum for the history of the city. Bristol Brewing in the old Ivywild School is the local's beer stop.
Official site ↗Air Force Academy
The Cadet Chapel, Barry Goldwater Visitor Center, and Falcon football are 45 minutes north on I-25; enter through the North Gate with your ID. Time a visit for a Wings of Blue jump or the noon meal formation on the Terrazzo.
Wikipedia ↗Cheyenne Mountain and the Broadmoor
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is the highest-elevation zoo in the country and lets you hand-feed giraffes; next door, the Broadmoor hotel grounds, Seven Falls, and the Cheyenne Mountain State Park trails make a full day on the southwest side, about 40 minutes from base.
Wikipedia ↗Insider tips
- 01Book the Pikes Peak Lodge at Peterson the day orders are cut — Schriever has no lodging, and June through August the lodge sells out while the per diem rate jumps to $168, so get your non-availability number early and secure a crashpad.
- 02Check the Enoch Road gate construction status before your first morning. In 2026 the North Gate is being rebuilt, inbound traffic is pushed to the West Gate on Irwin Avenue, and from 0500 to 0900 all three lanes run inbound; the VCC still lives on Enoch Road.
- 03CO-94 is a two-lane rural highway with real winter drift and real deer. Keep an ice scraper, a blanket, and a full tank; when Space Base Delta 1 announces delayed reporting, believe it, and follow 50 FSS and the Peterson–Schriever Facebook pages for the snow calls.
- 04There is nothing to eat outside the Restricted Area except food trucks from 1030 to 1300 on weekdays. Stock the fridge at the Peterson commissary on the way out of town and pack lunch — the drive to Powers Boulevard for a sandwich burns an hour.
- 05You are at 6,200 feet with a dry wind. Drink twice the water you think you need, go easy on alcohol the first few nights, and expect the PT test to feel harder than at sea level for a week or two.
- 06Summer afternoons bring hail and lightning fast — park under cover when you can, and do not plan a Pikes Peak or Incline day that ends after noon.
- 07If you are PCSing with kids, apply at MilitaryChildCare.com and contact the D49 or Ellicott registrar before you arrive; CDC waitlists in Colorado Springs run months, and District 49 schools of choice fill early.
- 08Pack for four seasons in one week: a puffy jacket and sunglasses in January, a rain shell and sunscreen in July, and closed-toe shoes for the wind-blown gravel around the plains parking lots.
