Overview

JBSA-Randolph is where the Air Force makes its instructor pilots. The 12th Flying Training Wing is the only wing that runs both Pilot Instructor Training and combat systems officer training, flying the T-6 Texan II, T-38C Talon and T-1 Jayhawk from an airfield that has been the busiest in the Air Force for years and is the only one with dual simultaneous instrument approaches. More than 1,000 students finish training here each year, and layered on top are Headquarters Air Education and Training Command, the Air Force Personnel Center, and the Air Force Recruiting Service, which together bring a steady flow of staff officers, board members, and conference attendees to a base of more than 4,000 military, 5,000 dependents, and 5,000 civilians.

The base sits on the northeast side of San Antonio, wrapped by Universal City, Schertz, and Converse, about 20 minutes from downtown and the River Walk. Randolph Field is a National Historic Landmark, and the 1931 Spanish Colonial Revival headquarters building everyone calls the Taj Mahal is the first thing you see through the Main Gate. Summer is the defining fact of life here: highs in the mid-90s from June through September and roughly 18 days over 100 in a normal year, so a crashpad with good air conditioning and a short drive to the gate matters more than it would almost anywhere else.

Weather

July averages a high of 96 and a low of 76, with about 18 days a year topping 100; January highs run near 63 with lows around 41. San Antonio gets roughly 32 inches of rain a year, most of it in spring and fall bursts that flood low-water crossings fast.

Best months

October through early December and March through April

Tough months

June through September for heat, plus May and October storm seasons that bring hail and flash flooding; mountain cedar pollen in December and January hits allergy sufferers hard

Getting there

  • Fly into San Antonio International (SAT), about 15 miles and 25 minutes from the base via Loop 410 or Loop 1604 east to I-35. Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is a 75 to 90 minute drive up I-35 and sometimes has cheaper fares. You will want a rental car; there is no practical transit to Randolph.
  • The Main Gate at the end of Pat Booker Road in Universal City is the only 24/7 gate. The South Gate runs Monday through Friday 0600 to 1800 (inbound only 0600 to 0830), the East Gate opens Monday through Friday only 0600 to 0830 inbound and 1500 to 1730 outbound, and the West Gate runs Monday through Friday 0600 to 1800. Every gate except Main closes on weekends and holidays. Confirm current hours on the JBSA gate page before you arrive; construction changes them.
  • The Randolph Visitor Control Center is on Harmon Drive just outside the Main Gate. Visitors need a valid REAL ID-compliant ID and a DoD ID-card sponsor registered in DBIDS for unescorted access; if you are TDY, your CAC gets you in. Confirm VCC hours on the JBSA visitor information page.
  • Morning traffic on I-35 southbound from Schertz and Selma and on Pat Booker Road backs up between 0630 and 0800, and the East and South Gates go inbound-only in that window. If you are staying north of the base, FM 78 and FM 1518 are the back-road relief valves.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • Randolph Family Housing is run by Hunt Military Communities: 300-plus historic single-family homes and duplexes on base, many with original hardwood floors, pet friendly with breed and size limits.
  • Leasing office at 205 New B Street East, 830-460-9130; the JBSA housing office is 210-652-1840.
  • On-base inventory is small, so most families rent or buy off base.
  • In 2026 the gate-adjacent starter homes in Universal City and Live Oak list around $240K to $380K, Converse $240K to $400K, and Schertz and Cibolo $300K to $550K-plus.
  • Check current rents on the JBSA housing referral site; three-bedroom rentals in Schertz and Cibolo generally fit inside with-dependents BAH.

BAH 2026

  • 2026 BAH for the San Antonio MHA (TX285), per published 2026 tables: E-5 approximately $1,869 with dependents and $1,500 without; O-3 approximately $2,127 with dependents and $2,007 without.
  • Rates dropped about 2.9 percent from 2025, so members who arrived earlier may be grandfathered at a higher rate.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator.
NeighborhoodCommute

Commute: ~5–15 min

Schertz

Commute: ~15–25 min

Cibolo

Schertz's newer neighbor with larger lots and lots of new construction in the $300K to $550K range, same SCUC ISD, and a slightly longer run in on FM 1103 and I-35.

Schools & childcare

  • Randolph Field ISD runs three schools on base: Randolph Elementary, Randolph Middle and Randolph High, about 1,440 students with a 13:1 ratio, an A rating (94) in the latest TEA accountability scores, and a 98 percent graduation rate. Founded in 1932, it was the first Texas district built for a military installation and is a TEA public district, not DoDEA. Families living on base enroll directly; off-base families apply as non-resident transfer students and need an approved transfer application, so start early. District office 210-357-2300.
  • Off base, Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD covers Schertz, Cibolo, and most of Universal City and is the district most Randolph families choose; Judson ISD covers Converse and Live Oak, and Comal ISD covers New Braunfels and Garden Ridge. Texas runs the Purple Star campus program for military-friendly schools; ask the School Liaison which local campuses currently hold it.
  • The JBSA-Randolph School Liaison Office is the central point of contact for Pre-K through 12 questions, including RFISD transfers and special-education continuity; reach it through the Military and Family Readiness Center at 210-652-5321.
  • Randolph has two Child Development Centers open Monday through Friday 0630 to 1745 (210-652-4946). Waitlists are long; request care on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you get orders and ask about Family Child Care homes as a bridge.
06

Healthcare

  • The Randolph Clinic (359th Medical Group), 221 3rd Street West, is an outpatient clinic of the 59th Medical Wing, open Monday through Friday 0730 to 1630, with primary care, flight medicine, pharmacy, dental, and limited specialty care. Book through the 59th MDW appointment line at 210-916-9900 or the MHS GENESIS patient portal. There is no emergency room.
  • For emergencies call 911 or drive to the nearest civilian ER: Northeast Methodist Hospital in Live Oak is about 10 minutes from the Main Gate, and Brooke Army Medical Center at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston, the DoD's only Level I trauma center, is about 25 minutes down I-35.
  • Texas moved to the TRICARE West Region on January 1, 2025, and the contractor is TriWest Healthcare Alliance; confirm your region by ZIP code on tricare.mil and update your Prime enrollment when you PCS.

The River Walk and the Alamo

Downtown San Antonio is about 20 miles and 25 to 30 minutes down I-35. Do the Alamo early before the crowds, then walk the river to the Pearl District for Hotel Emma's bar, the weekend farmers market, and some of the best restaurants in Texas.

Natural Bridge Caverns and Wildlife Ranch

Fifteen minutes north of the base off FM 3009, the caverns run guided tours at a steady 70 degrees year round, which is the best air conditioning in South Texas in August. The drive-through wildlife ranch next door is a good half day with kids.

Joint Base San Antonio military ambassadors joined Fiesta royalty and special guests to start the festivities with a flash mob dance, confetti, fireworks and lots of people in wild

Fiesta San Antonio

Ten days in April, the city throws its biggest party: Battle of Flowers parade, NIOSA in La Villita, and medal-trading everywhere. Book lodging months ahead; hotels sell out and rates jump. The Stock Show and Rodeo in February is the other big draw and the reason per diem spikes.

Hill Country day trips

Fredericksburg's wineries and German main street are about 90 minutes northwest via I-10 and US 290; Enchanted Rock is another 20 minutes past that. Bandera and the Medina River are a shorter run west of the city.

Insider tips

  1. 01The Main Gate is the only gate that is open 24/7, and East and South go inbound-only from 0600 to 0830 on weekdays. If you have a 0500 brief, plan on Pat Booker Road every time.
  2. 02San Antonio is Flash Flood Alley. Turn around, don't drown is not a slogan here; low-water crossings on FM 78 and around Cibolo Creek go under in a hard rain. Spring and fall storms also bring hail, so park under cover if you can.
  3. 03Summer heat is the real enemy. Plan runs before 0700, keep a gallon of water in the car, and expect your car interior to hit 140 degrees on the ramp.
  4. 04Mountain cedar pollen peaks December through February and flattens people who have never had allergies. Pack antihistamines if you are here in winter.
  5. 05Book the Randolph Inn the day you get orders; PIT class starts and AETC conferences fill it. If they are full, get the non-availability number in writing before you book off base.
  6. 06The February and March per diem bump to $161 tracks the Stock Show and Rodeo; Fiesta in April does not get a bump but hotels still sell out, so a crashpad is the safer bet.
  7. 07Off-base families who want their kids in Randolph Field ISD need an approved non-resident transfer application, and slots are not guaranteed. Have your Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD or Judson ISD backup zoned before you sign a lease.
  8. 08Hunt's on-base housing is 300-plus historic homes with long waitlists by bedroom count and rank. Call 830-460-9130 before you arrive, and walk any home carefully at move-in; families have filed suits over mold and maintenance in recent years.

FAQ

Can I stay off base and get reimbursed?
Yes, once the Randolph Inn (210-652-1844) issues a non-availability number. You then lodge commercially at the FY2026 San Antonio rate of $137 a night ($161 in February and March) plus $74 M&IE, and a crashpad priced under that rate with an itemized receipt reimburses cleanly in DTS.
Which gate should I use when I arrive?
Use the Main Gate at the end of Pat Booker Road in Universal City; it is the only 24/7 gate and the Visitor Control Center is right outside it on Harmon Drive. The other gates are weekday-only with inbound or outbound windows, and all of them close on weekends and holidays.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The Randolph Clinic is outpatient only with no emergency room. For emergencies call 911 or go to Northeast Methodist in Live Oak, about 10 minutes away; Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston is the military trauma center about 25 minutes south.
Where do families with kids usually live?
Schertz and Cibolo are the consensus picks for Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD schools and a 15 to 30 minute commute, Universal City and Live Oak for the shortest drive and lowest prices, and Converse or New Braunfels for new construction or Hill Country living. On-base Hunt housing is limited to about 300 homes and gets you Randolph Field ISD without a transfer application.
