Overview

Travis is Air Mobility Command's Gateway to the Pacific. The 60th Air Mobility Wing flies 26 C-5M Galaxies, 13 C-17 Globemaster IIIs, and the KC-46A Pegasus out of Fairfield, California, with the Reserve 349th AMW as an associate wing and the 621st Contingency Response Wing standing by to open airfields anywhere on the planet. Roughly 6,300 active-duty, 2,750 reservists, and 1,300 civil servants work here, and David Grant USAF Medical Center — a 265-bed teaching hospital — draws its own steady stream of medical rotations. Stage crews, augmentees, exercise players, and CRW teams all cycle through on TDY.

The base sits three miles east of Fairfield in Solano County, about 50 miles from both San Francisco and Sacramento along I-80. Summers are dry and hot — July averages near 90°F with cool 58°F nights — and the afternoon Delta breeze that blows through the base is strong enough that Travis is famous for wind. Winters are mild and wet (about 24 inches of rain, almost all from November to March). For a TDY traveler the practical realities are I-80 traffic, Bay Area-priced hotels sitting under a standard CONUS per diem rate, and a Westwind Inn that fills during surges.

Weather

Fairfield averages a 90°F high and 58°F low in July, and 57°F/40°F in January, with about 24.5 inches of rain a year concentrated in winter. Summer afternoons bring a strong, reliable west wind off Suisun Bay, and the all-time high is 117°F.

Best months

April–June and September–October

Tough months

Late July–September for heat, wind, and wildfire smoke; December–February for rain and dense tule fog on I-80

Getting there

  • Fly into Sacramento (SMF) — about 50 minutes northeast via I-80 — or into SFO or Oakland (OAK), which are closer to 60–90 minutes depending on Bay Area traffic. All three have full rental-car centers; you'll want a car, because there's no practical transit between the terminals, the base, and off-base lodging.
  • The Hospital Gate is open 24 hours. The Main Gate at the end of Air Base Parkway (home of the Visitor Control Center) runs 0600–2200 Monday–Friday and the North Gate off Vanden Road runs 0600–2100 Monday–Friday per the base housing site; the South Gate is commercial traffic only. Gate hours shift with holidays and FPCON, so confirm on travis.af.mil before you arrive.
  • The Visitor Control Center is at the Main Gate (Bldg 599; 707-424-1462 per the base guide). Bring a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or passport, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance; visitors without a DoD ID need a sponsor and a pass. Published VCC hours vary between sources — call ahead if you're arriving on a weekend.
  • I-80 between Vacaville and the Carquinez Bridge is one of Northern California's most congested corridors; westbound is heavy 0600–0900 and eastbound 1500–1900, and holiday weekends toward Tahoe or the Bay can add an hour. Winter tule fog on I-80 and Highway 12 can cut visibility to near zero in the early morning.

NeighborhoodCommute

Eastern Fairfield / Paradise Valley

Newer subdivisions and the Paradise Valley golf community closest to the Main Gate, zoned to Travis Unified schools, with 3-bed rentals around $3,000 and the shortest commute on base.

Commute: ~10 min

Vacaville

The North Gate town — family-friendly tracts off Vanden and Peabody Roads, Vacaville Premium Outlets, a strong Travis USD/Vacaville USD school mix, and prices a notch below Fairfield's west side.

Commute: ~15 min

Suisun City

Older, more affordable homes and a walkable waterfront marina district south of the base off Highway 12, with quick access to the Main Gate via Walters Road.

Commute: ~10 min

Cordelia / Green Valley

West Fairfield's quieter, greener side near the Green Valley Country Club and Rockville Hills trails — higher prices and HOAs, larger lots, and the easiest jump onto I-80 toward the Bay.

Commute: ~20 min

Dixon

Small farm town up Highway 113 with more house per dollar, a reverse commute against I-80 traffic, and a quick run to Davis and Sacramento.

Commute: ~25 min

Schools & childcare

  • Two elementary schools sit on base — Travis Elementary and Scandia Elementary — both part of Travis Unified School District, which also serves eastern Fairfield and southern Vacaville with Golden West Middle and Vanden High.
  • Travis USD (about eight schools) is the district for most base-adjacent neighborhoods; Vacaville USD covers homes north of Alamo Drive and Fairfield-Suisun USD covers the rest of Fairfield and Suisun City. Travis Elementary and the Travis Education Center were named 2023 Purple Star schools for military-connected students.
  • School Liaison: 707-424-4345, Bldg 381 Room A-102 (60 FSS command section) — the office handles interdistrict transfer questions, which matter here because on-base housing and off-base zip codes can fall in different districts.
  • Travis runs three Child Development Centers (CDC 1, 2, and 3) plus school-age programs; waitlists are long in this high-cost area, so register on MilitaryChildCare.com as soon as you have orders.
06

Healthcare

  • David Grant USAF Medical Center (60th Medical Group), 101 Bodin Circle, Bldg 777, is a full 265-bed teaching hospital — the Air Force's largest in the continental U.S. — with a 24/7 emergency department. Central appointments 707-423-3000 (Mon–Fri 0700–1645); dental 707-423-7001.
  • Emergencies go straight to DGMC's ER on base. Off base, NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield and NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville are the nearest civilian ERs; the MHS Nurse Advice Line (800-874-2273, option 1) is available 24/7 for triage questions.
  • Travis is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance.

Insider tips

  1. 01Wind is the Travis signature. Summer afternoons routinely gust over 30 mph across the flightline and the housing areas — secure anything on a patio, and expect wind-driven delays on the ramp.
  2. 02Wildfire season runs August–October. The 2020 LNU Lightning Complex reached the base boundary and forced an evacuation; keep a go-bag, download the Solano County alert app, and expect smoky-air days that close outdoor PT.
  3. 03Book the Westwind Inn the day your orders drop. Large mobility exercises, CRW rotations, and DGMC training cycles can fill it, and off-base I-80 hotels price above the $110 rate — a non-availability number is what makes commercial lodging reimbursable.
  4. 04Use the Hospital Gate for anything after 2200 or before 0600 — it's the only 24-hour gate — and confirm current gate hours on travis.af.mil, since they shift with holidays and FPCON.
  5. 05Time I-80. Westbound mornings and eastbound afternoons stack up between Vacaville and the Carquinez Bridge, and Friday afternoons toward Tahoe or the Bay can add an hour. Peabody Road and Vanden Road from Vacaville to the North Gate are the local bypass.
  6. 06PCSing? Solano County is a high-cost area and Travis Family Homes has waitlists by bedroom count; call the Housing Management Office (707-424-1746) before you arrive, and get on MilitaryChildCare.com for the CDCs the same day.
  7. 07Winter tule fog on I-80, Highway 12, and Highway 113 can drop visibility to near zero before sunrise; give yourself extra time for early show times December through February.
  8. 08Pack layers year-round. July can hit 100°F at noon and 58°F after dark with the Delta breeze, and October can swing 40 degrees in a day.

FAQ

Can I stay off base and get reimbursed at Travis?
Yes, if the Westwind Inn (707-424-8000) can't accommodate you. Book through af.dodlodging.net first; if it's full you'll receive a non-availability number and can lodge commercially at the FY2026 standard CONUS rate that applies to Fairfield — $110 lodging plus $68 M&IE ($51 on travel days). A crashpad priced at or under $110 with an itemized receipt reimburses like a hotel.
Which gate do I use, and what ID do I need?
Most arrivals use the Main Gate at the end of Air Base Parkway, where the Visitor Control Center issues passes for anyone without a DoD ID. It runs weekday hours (published as 0600–2200), the North Gate off Vanden Road closes earlier, and the Hospital Gate is the only 24-hour entry. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, registration, and proof of insurance, and confirm hours on travis.af.mil.
Is there a hospital on base?
Yes. David Grant USAF Medical Center is a full 265-bed hospital with a 24/7 emergency department, the largest Air Force medical facility in the continental U.S. Central appointments are 707-423-3000. Civilian ERs at NorthBay in Fairfield and Vacaville are 10–15 minutes away as backups.
Where do families live near Travis AFB?
On base in Travis Family Homes (Balfour Beatty, 707-437-4571) or in eastern Fairfield, Suisun City, and Vacaville, all within 10–20 minutes of a gate. Cordelia and Green Valley on Fairfield's west side offer larger, pricier homes about 20 minutes out; Dixon is the value pick with a reverse commute. Two elementary schools sit on base in Travis Unified School District.
