Overview

Vandenberg Space Force Base is the West Coast's spaceport. Space Launch Delta 30 operates the Western Range across roughly 99,000 acres and 44 miles of Pacific coastline, hosting polar-orbit launches for the Space Force, NRO, NASA, and commercial providers, plus Minuteman III test launches flown by the 576th Flight Test Squadron. The base supported 66 launches in 2025 and is building toward 150 a year, with SpaceX at SLC-4E, ULA converting SLC-3 for Vulcan, and SLC-6 being rebuilt for Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. About 3,100 military members, 1,300 civilians, and 2,800 contractors work here, and the TDY flow is steady: ICBM launch crews from the missile wings, CSpOC and Space Delta 5 operators, 532nd Training Squadron students, and launch-campaign engineers who show up for weeks at a time.

The base sits north of Lompoc, a town of about 44,000 known for flower fields, murals, and the Sta. Rita Hills wine country, and about 30 minutes south of Santa Maria. The weather is mild but foggy: Lompoc's average August high is only 73°F and a marine layer can sit on the coast for days in early summer. Santa Barbara County's cost of living runs 55 to 80 percent above the national average, hotel inventory in Lompoc is thin, and a big launch window can soak up every room for miles. Plan lodging early, pack layers, and expect a Highway 1 commute.

Weather

Lompoc averages a 65°F high and 43°F low in January and only 73°F to 75°F highs from August through September, with lows in the mid-50s; annual rainfall is about 15 inches, nearly all from November through March. Fog and a persistent marine layer are the defining feature, and afternoon wind on the coast is normal.

Best months

September through November — the clearest, warmest stretch, with the fewest foggy mornings.

Tough months

May through July for the marine layer (May Gray and June Gloom) and the wettest weeks of January through March, when Highway 1 and the Harris Grade can be slick and visibility drops.

Getting there

  • Fly into Santa Maria (SMX), about 14 miles and 20 minutes from the Santa Maria Gate, if your itinerary allows; it is a small airport with limited flights, so most travelers land at San Luis Obispo (SBP, ~50 min), Santa Barbara (SBA, ~1 hr), or LAX (about 3 hours up US-101 and Highway 1). Rent a car — there is no practical transit to base or between Lompoc and Santa Maria.
  • The Santa Maria (Main) Gate on Highway 1, the South Gate, and the Solvang Gate off Highway 246 are open 24/7. The Utah Gate runs weekdays 0600 to 2200 and the Lompoc Gate opens only for the 0600 to 0700 weekday morning rush. Gate hours change with security posture, so confirm on the Vandenberg SFB visitor page before a late arrival.
  • The Visitor Center is just outside the Santa Maria Gate at 6 California Blvd, Bldg 17595 (805-606-7662); published hours are weekdays 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed weekends. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, and have your sponsor or orders ready if you need a visitor pass; DoD ID holders can proceed straight through the gate.
  • Launch days bring temporary road closures on Highway 1 north of Lompoc and around South Base, and the base sometimes closes Surf Beach and Jalama Road for range safety. Check SLD 30's social media for launch windows the day before you travel, and add time for morning fog on Highway 1 and the Harris Grade.

Housing & BAH

Housing

  • The Military Housing Office is at 602 Juniper Street, Vandenberg SFB, CA 93437, 805-606-3434 (weekdays 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m.); call as soon as you have orders, because on-base homes carry waitlists and the office also runs off-base referrals.
  • Off base, Military OneSource lists a two-bedroom apartment in the area at about $3,028 per month and a median home price near $615,000 (2025-2026), while Lompoc rentals average closer to $2,800.
  • California taxes active-duty pay for residents, which surprises people PCSing from no-tax states.

BAH 2026

  • 2026 BAH for the Vandenberg SFB MHA (listed as CA026 on housing tables) is approximately $3,333 for an E-5 with dependents and $2,778 without, and $3,780 for an O-3 with dependents and $3,528 without, per published 2026 tables.
  • Confirm on the DTMO BAH calculator before signing a lease.
NeighborhoodCommute

Vandenberg Village

Unincorporated neighborhood just north of Lompoc where a big share of base families live, home to Cabrillo High School and a quick Highway 1 run to the gates; mostly 1970s-2000s single-family homes with rents that track the BAH tables.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Lompoc

The base's hometown: a working-class city of 44,000 with murals, the Wine Ghetto tasting rooms, Lompoc Unified schools, and the most affordable rents in the county; expect fog and a quiet downtown but the shortest drive to base.

Commute: ~15-20 min

Mission Hills

Small residential pocket between Lompoc and the base near La Purísima Mission, mostly modest single-family homes; fewer rentals but close to the Lompoc Gate for the early-morning window.

Commute: ~10-15 min

Orcutt

Suburban Santa Maria's south side with newer subdivisions, Orcutt Union schools, and Old Town Orcutt restaurants; families pick it for schools and sunnier weather in exchange for a Highway 135 and Highway 1 commute.

Commute: ~25-30 min

Santa Maria

The county's biggest inland city, with the most rentals, Marian Regional Medical Center, chain shopping, and Santa Maria-style barbecue; more traffic and heat, more choice, and SMX airport at your door.

Commute: ~30 min

Buellton / Solvang

Danish-themed tourist towns in the Santa Ynez Valley with warmer, drier weather, good schools, and pricier homes; the Solvang Gate on Highway 246 makes the drive shorter than the map suggests.

Commute: ~30-35 min

Schools & childcare

  • Two schools sit on or beside the base: Crestview Elementary on main base and Vandenberg Middle School in the old East Housing area across from the Main Gate, alongside a public charter school; Cabrillo High School in Vandenberg Village serves most base families. All are Lompoc Unified School District (LUSD) schools.
  • LUSD runs a Military-Connected Families program for the district's large Vandenberg population; families in Orcutt or Santa Maria attend Orcutt Union, Santa Maria-Bonita, or Santa Maria Joint Union High schools, and Buellton and Solvang have their own elementary districts feeding Santa Ynez Valley Union High.
  • The School Liaison is at 641 Utah Ave, Bldg 13640, Ste 242, 805-606-5698 or 805-865-6185; call before you pick a neighborhood so you know which attendance zone you are renting into.
  • The on-base Child Development Center runs on a waitlist like every CDC in California; register on MilitaryChildCare.com the day you have orders and ask the Military and Family Readiness Center about Family Child Care homes in Lompoc and Vandenberg Village as a bridge.
06

Healthcare

  • The 30th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic, not a hospital: primary care, pharmacy, dental, immunizations (805-606-8474), and limited specialty care. There is no emergency room. Find the current appointment line on vandenberg.tricare.mil or enroll through the MHS GENESIS patient portal.
  • Emergencies go to Lompoc Valley Medical Center in Lompoc, the closest ER at roughly 15 to 20 minutes from the Main Gate, or Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria, the larger regional hospital about 30 minutes north with trauma and labor-and-delivery services.
  • Vandenberg is in the TRICARE West Region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance; TDY travelers on Prime should use the clinic or a network urgent care in Lompoc or Santa Maria and log the visit with TriWest.

Insider tips

  1. 01Pack layers year-round. An August afternoon in Lompoc can be 65°F under fog while Santa Maria is 80°F; the marine layer does not care what month it is, and the Pacific stays in the mid-50s.
  2. 02The Lompoc Gate is only open weekday mornings 0600 to 0700, so everyone leaves Lompoc through the Santa Maria (Main) Gate on Highway 1 the rest of the day; the Solvang Gate on Highway 246 is the back door from Buellton and Solvang.
  3. 03Launch windows own the calendar. Roads on and around South Base close, Jalama Road and Surf Beach can shut, and booster landings produce sonic booms over Lompoc; watch SLD 30 social media the day before a launch.
  4. 04Book the Vandenberg Lodge the day you get orders. Launch campaigns bring hundreds of contractor engineers into a town with a small hotel inventory, and rooms near a big mission disappear weeks out.
  5. 05Your per diem is the Santa Barbara County rate, not standard CONUS. Make sure DTS shows $205 lodging ($262 in July and August) and $92 M&IE, because Lompoc hotels routinely price near the ceiling.
  6. 06PCS families: call the Military Housing Office (805-606-3434) and the School Liaison (805-606-5698) before you choose between Lompoc, Vandenberg Village, and Orcutt; the commute, the fog, and the attendance zone are all different.
  7. 07California taxes active-duty pay for legal residents, and the county's cost of living runs 55 to 80 percent above average. Keep your home-of-record paperwork straight and budget for gas at California prices.
  8. 08Wildfire and wind are the local hazards, not hurricanes. Late summer and fall bring sundowner winds and brush fires along the coast ranges; know the base recall procedures and keep a go-bag in the car.

FAQ

Can I stay off base on TDY orders, and what does DTS reimburse?
Yes, once the Vandenberg Lodge (805-606-1844) confirms it cannot house you and issues a non-availability number. Vandenberg uses the FY2026 Santa Barbara County rate: $205 lodging most of the year, $262 in July and August, and $92 M&IE. A furnished crashpad under that ceiling with an itemized receipt reimburses in full.
Which gate do I use and what ID do I need?
Arrive through the Santa Maria (Main) Gate on Highway 1 north of Lompoc; it is open 24/7 and the Visitor Center (805-606-7662) is right there for passes. DoD ID card holders drive through; everyone else needs a REAL ID-compliant license or passport and a sponsor or orders for a pass.
Is there a hospital on base?
No. The 30th Medical Group is an outpatient clinic without an emergency room. For emergencies go to Lompoc Valley Medical Center in Lompoc or Marian Regional Medical Center in Santa Maria; for urgent care use a TriWest network clinic in Lompoc or Santa Maria.
Where do Vandenberg families live?
Most live in Vandenberg Village and Lompoc, 10 to 20 minutes from the gates and zoned to Lompoc Unified schools, or on base through the Military Housing Office. Families who want sunnier weather and more shopping spread to Orcutt and Santa Maria, about 30 minutes north, or to Buellton and Solvang east on Highway 246.
