Overview
Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the Marine Corps' major West Coast base: 125,000 acres and 17 miles of coastline between Oceanside and San Clemente, home to I Marine Expeditionary Force, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Logistics Group, Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, and Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. It is also the West Coast schoolhouse. School of Infantry-West in the 52 Area graduates a new class of infantry Marines every few weeks, Weapons and Field Training Battalion at Edson Range trains every MCRD San Diego recruit on the rifle, and the Assault Amphibian School lives here too. Add more than 42,000 active duty, about 3,900 civilians, and 23,500 reserve component members who rotate through, and you have a base where a large share of people are on orders rather than settled.
The place is coastal Southern California, which is the good news and the expensive news. Oceanside is a working beach city at the base's southern edge, Carlsbad and Vista sit just south and east, Fallbrook and Temecula are inland past the Naval Weapons Station, and San Clemente is across the northern boundary in Orange County. Weather is mild year-round with a marine layer that hangs on through May and June, I-5 traffic is the daily variable, and hotels are priced for tourists, which is why per diem lodging is a real problem here and why a furnished crashpad with a kitchen makes sense for anything longer than a week.
Weather
Oceanside is mild all year: temperatures typically run between about 45 F and 76 F, with August the warmest month around 71 F average and January the coolest around 55 F. Rain totals roughly 12 inches a year, nearly all of it November through March. The marine layer, known locally as May gray and June gloom, keeps mornings overcast on the coast in late spring, while inland areas like Fallbrook and Temecula run 10 to 20 degrees hotter in summer.
Best months
September through November — warm water, clear skies, and the summer tourists gone
Tough months
May and June for the gray marine layer on the coast, and December through February when the few real rainstorms turn the ranges to mud and I-5 into a parking lot
Getting there
- Fly into San Diego International (SAN), about 42 miles south; plan roughly 50 minutes to the Main Gate via I-5 outside rush hour and well over an hour at 7 to 9 a.m. or 3 to 7 p.m. John Wayne (SNA) in Orange County is about an hour north, and LAX is 88 miles.
- Main Gate at 20250 Vandegrift Boulevard, off I-5 at the Oceanside Harbor / Camp Pendleton exit, plus the San Luis Rey Gate off CA-76, the Las Pulgas Gate, and the San Onofre Gate off I-5 north, are all listed as open 24/7 for DoD ID holders.
- Del Mar Gate runs weekdays 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the Cristianitos Gate near San Clemente weekdays 5 a.m. to midnight; the Fallbrook Naval Weapons Station gate is 24/7 for authorized personnel only. Hours change with exercises and force protection conditions, so confirm on the base access page.
- Visitors without a CAC or DBIDS credential go to the Visitor Center, Building 20255T next to the Main Gate, open Monday through Friday about 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (760-763-8435). Waits of two to three hours are common and noon is the safe latest arrival; sponsored DBIDS requests can take two to three weeks to process.
- Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, current registration, and proof of insurance in the visitor lane, and tell the sentry exactly where you are headed. Base speed limits are enforced and traffic on Vandegrift and Basilone Road backs up at shift change.
- No car? Oceanside Transit Center at 235 South Tremont Street has Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, Metrolink, COASTER, and SPRINTER service, and it is about 10 minutes by rideshare to the Main Gate.

- Ward Lodge, Building 1310 on Mainside (760-725-5304), and Pacific Views Lodge, Building 202870 near the Main Gate and Naval Hospital (760-763-7805), both have front desks open 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. seven days a week and book through the 24/7 reservation center at 1-888-409-7829 or lodgingreservations.usmc-mccs.org.
- Official travelers get priority; leisure guests can only book 30 days out for up to seven nights.
- Rooms range from standard to kitchenette suites, each lodge has a handful of pet-friendly rooms for dogs under 50 pounds, and Pacific Views has a fitness center and 24-hour sundries.
- There is also a Navy Lodge on base for PCS families and official travelers; reserve through navy-lodge.com or 800-628-9466.
- If neither can house you for your dates, get the non-availability statement before you book off base so your voucher is not questioned.
Off-base per diem
- Confirm the current lodging allowance for your duty location and travel dates with the official rate lookup and your travel office.
- No current rate is quoted here.
- Alaska and Hawaii use DoD OCONUS rates.
- A published ceiling is not proof of reimbursement eligibility.
The crashpad option
Camp Pendleton TDYs run long: a squad leader course is seven to eleven weeks, range and SOI instructor tours stretch months, and I MEF exercise planners and reservists rotate in and out for weeks at a time. Base Crashpads does not have a listed property at Camp Pendleton yet, but we are expanding into Oceanside, Vista, and Carlsbad now. If you own a furnished place within 20 minutes of the Main Gate or you are heading here on orders, reach out and we will connect you.
Camp Pendleton crashpadsHousing & BAH
Housing
- Camp Pendleton's on-base housing is privatized and split between two partners: Liberty Military Housing manages most districts, including San Onofre, Wire Mountain, Stuart Mesa, Santa Margarita, and the Del Mar beach area, while Hunt Military Communities manages the De Luz district.
- Wait lists commonly run from a few weeks to several months depending on rank and bedroom count, you can only be on one partner's list at a time, and about 73 percent of families end up off base.
- The off-base market is coastal San Diego County pricing: Oceanside and Vista are the value plays, Carlsbad and San Marcos cost more, Fallbrook offers acreage inland, and Temecula and Murrieta trade a 45-minute commute for a bigger house.
- Apply through the Camp Pendleton Housing Office as soon as you have orders.
BAH 2026
- Camp Pendleton has its own Military Housing Area separate from San Diego, and the 2026 rates are among the highest in the country.
- The third-party calculators we checked disagreed on both the MHA code and the exact E-5 and O-3 figures, so we are not quoting numbers here; pull the official 2026 rate for your grade and dependency status on the DTMO BAH calculator using the base zip code 92055.
- Expect it to cover a solid two- or three-bedroom rental in Oceanside or Vista but not a beachfront place in Carlsbad.
Oceanside (Fire Mountain, Rancho Del Oro, Ivey Ranch)
The base's home city: surf-town downtown and pier, older neighborhoods near the harbor, newer tracts and condos inland along CA-76; the most Marine-dense and best-value coastal option
Carlsbad
Polished beach city with the Village, the Flower Fields, LEGOLAND, and top-rated schools; pricier and popular with officers and dual-income families
Vista and San Marcos
Inland suburbs east of Oceanside with more house for the money, a big craft-brewery scene in Vista, and Cal State San Marcos; warmer summers, less marine layer
Fallbrook and Temecula
Fallbrook is avocado-grove country right outside the Naval Weapons Station gate; Temecula and Murrieta over the county line offer big newer homes and wine country at the cost of a real commute
Schools & childcare
- Five public elementary schools sit on base: North Terrace, Santa Margarita, and Stuart Mesa near the Main Gate are run by Oceanside Unified School District, and Mary Fay Pendleton (K-8) and San Onofre School near the north gates are run by Fallbrook Union Elementary School District. None are DoDEA; they serve military families exclusively.
- Off base, Oceanside Unified, Carlsbad Unified, Vista Unified, San Marcos Unified, and Fallbrook Union districts serve the surrounding cities; Carlsbad Unified is consistently the most sought-after by families choosing a neighborhood for schools.
- The Camp Pendleton School Liaison Program (760-763-7385) helps with enrollment, records transfer, and the Interstate Compact for military kids; contact them before you pick a neighborhood.
- MCCS runs multiple Child Development Centers and Youth and Teen Centers across the base; register on MilitaryChildCare.com early because waits for infant care are long.
- For higher education, Palomar College operates a campus on base and MiraCosta College in Oceanside is the local community college; Cal State San Marcos is 30 minutes east.
Healthcare
- Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton at 200 Mercy Circle near the Main Gate is a 150-bed Navy hospital with a 26-bed emergency department open 24/7, nine operating rooms, imaging, and labor and delivery; the main line is 760-725-4357 and most enrolled beneficiaries get primary care through its Medical Home Port teams and branch clinics across the base.
- Camp Pendleton is in the TRICARE West region, administered by TriWest Healthcare Alliance; TDY travelers on Prime should use the Naval Hospital emergency department or urgent care and call the Nurse Advice Line for anything else.
- Nearest civilian hospitals are Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside and Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas; the region's Level I trauma centers are Scripps La Jolla and UC San Diego Health in San Diego.
- The Naval Hospital pharmacy fills prescriptions for eligible beneficiaries and takes electronic prescriptions from civilian providers; the pharmacy line is 866-286-8249. Camp Pendleton also has a Fisher House at 2014 San Jacinto Road for families of patients.
On base
- Commissary & Exchange
Two commissaries, a large one on the south side near Mainside and a smaller, quieter one on the north side; the Mainside Marine Corps Exchange has a food court and is the largest MCX complex on base, with smaller exchanges in the outlying camps
- Fitness
13 fitness centers across the base, anchored by Paige Fieldhouse at 13th Street and Vandegrift Boulevard, Building 1110 (760-725-6394), and O'Neill Fitness Center on Mainside, plus area gyms in the 14, 21, 22, 23, 31, 33, 41, 44, 52, 53, and 62 Areas
- Outdoor recreation
Del Mar Beach Resort and San Onofre Beach with rentable cottages and RV sites, Lake O'Neill campground, the Camp Pendleton Stables, Marine Memorial Golf Course, and MCCS Outdoor Adventure gear rental
- Dining
MCCS runs full-service restaurants, coffee shops, and national fast-food brands across Mainside and the outlying areas, and the Pacific Views Event Center handles large functions; off base, Oceanside's Coast Highway and Pier District has the best variety
- Legal & finance
Legal Assistance Office at Mainside for powers of attorney, wills, and landlord-tenant questions; Personal Financial Management counselors through Marine and Family Programs; Navy Federal and other bank branches on base
- Chapel & pets
Multiple chapels across the base with Catholic and Protestant services; the base veterinary treatment facility handles registration and basic care, and both Inns of the Corps lodges accept dogs under 50 pounds with breed restrictions
Off duty

Oceanside Pier and Harbor
One of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast, with the beach, the Strand, and the Pier District's restaurants at its foot. Oceanside Harbor a mile north has whale watching, sportfishing charters, and a quieter beach.

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch
Fifty acres of Giant Tecolote ranunculus in bloom from roughly March through early May on a hillside above I-5. Time a spring TDY right and it is the best photo stop in North County.
Official site ↗Temecula Valley Wine Country
About 45 minutes inland via CA-76 and I-15, with dozens of wineries, Old Town Temecula, and hot-air balloon rides at dawn. A standard day trip for families and a common Saturday for staff on longer orders.
Official site ↗California Surf Museum
Downtown Oceanside's small, well-done museum of surf history, including Bethany Hamilton's board. Pair it with a walk to the pier and a taco on Coast Highway.
Official site ↗Insider tips
- 01Book Inns of the Corps the day you get orders; official travel has priority, but summer PCS season and big I MEF exercises fill both lodges, and the non-availability statement is what lets you lodge off base at per diem.
- 02If your business is in the 52 Area (SOI-West), 62 Area, or at Edson Range, stay near the north end or in San Clemente; from Oceanside it can be 30 to 40 minutes across the base on Basilone and Vandegrift, and the Cristianitos Gate is faster.
- 03The Visitor Center line at the Main Gate is the worst on Monday mornings and after holidays. If a sponsor can submit your DBIDS request two to three weeks ahead, do it, and arrive before noon regardless.
- 04I-5 northbound from San Diego is heavy from 3 to 7 p.m. and southbound is heavy from 6 to 9 a.m.; the San Luis Rey Gate via CA-76 is often the quicker way in from Vista and inland Oceanside.
- 05June and July per diem jumps to $237, so a crashpad priced at the standard $199 still leaves you whole in summer; ask for a receipt that shows the nightly rate for DTS.
- 06The north-side commissary is much smaller than Mainside but has no line; the Mainside MCX food court is the fastest lunch if you are between meetings.
- 07Pack a light jacket even in July. Coastal mornings under the marine layer run 60 degrees and the wind on the ranges at Edson is cold at 0500.
- 08Rental cars and hotels in Oceanside surge during Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the summer break; if your TDY overlaps, lock in lodging a month out.
